Observations/Questions

1 John 2:18–19 “18 Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.”
It’s the last hour what does that mean?
What is an antichrist?
Who went out from us?
What does it mean to go out from us?
Colossians 4:14 “14 Luke the beloved physician greets you, as does Demas.”
2 Timothy 4:10 “10 For Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica. .”
People were leaving the faith even those who had been taught by the apostles
Those who walk away from the faith are the ones who were never apart of the faith. - perserverance of the saints
Philippians 2:12 “12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,
1 John 2:22–23 “22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.”
Anitchrists are anyone who denies that Jesus is the Christ.
I can’t deny Jesus and have the Father
1 John 2:24–25 “24 Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life.”
What did they hear from the beginning?
1 John 1:1-4
Who Jesus is
What does it mean to have the truth of Jesus abide in me? What does abide mean?
Abide means to take up residence. To become comfortable with.
1 John 2:26–27 “26 I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you. 27 But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.”
What is this anointing?
This is the giving of the holy spirit. Which anoints us and seals us. If we have been saved then we can never lose our salvation.
If we walk away from the faith that means we were never truly apart of the faith.
The Holy Spirit will continue to teach the believer
How?
1 John 3:1–3 “1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.”
We are children of God!
The world doesn’t know us and the world hates what it doesn’t know. The world doesn’t know us because it does not know God.
When I finally see Jesus I will become like him.
I will be purified if I put my hope in Jesus
1 John 3:4–6 “4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him.”
What does make a practice of sinning mean?
unrepentant, habitual, life characterizing sin
If I keep on sinning? I’m not of God??????
Practice of sinning….
It’s not that you never sin. Or that there aren’t sins that you struggle with for years.
But as I look back at my life. I see sin that I have struggled with and failed to find total victory over. Like there are struggles that feel like I can’t beat.
But when I look back at my life here’s what I see.
I agree with God that it is sin.
I hate it
I repent of it
I am actively fighting it
Read Romans 7
1 John 3:10 “10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.”

Life Lessons

We can expect to see people leave the faith and walk away from Jesus.
1 Corinthians 10:12 “12 Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.”
That’s why I make you take time to study God’s word for yourself. I want you to know it. TO be used to reading it. I want the word of God to abide in your life because if it does it will radically change your life. It will save you and keep you saved.
We cannot expect to be know and understood by the world. I need to get used to being misunderstood.
The seeing of Jesus changes me to become more like him.
The more hope I put in Jesus the more I will be purified to become like him.

Application Question

Am I truly saved—and how can I know for sure? What evidence or fruit would Scripture say marks genuine faith in Christ?
Has the truth of who Jesus is come to abide in my life? What evidences of that are there?
Do I practice righteousness or unrighteoueness and how? Am i fighting for holiness or to cover sin? Do i love my brother?
