Can anyone tell me what the Trinity is?
The Trinity is the belief that there is One God in the 3 persons, Father Son, and Spirit, who are equal in worth and value.
the word “trinity” does not appear in the Bible, but each of the 3 persons are
why do we believe there are multiple persons?
Genesis 1:26a “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness” Genesis 3:22a “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil.”
Matthew 28:19 NET
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
There are 7 Propositions that boil down what we believe about the Trinity
The Father is God
The Son is God
The Spirit is God
The Father is not the Son
The Son is not the Spirit
The Spirit is not the Father
There is one God
And now you are thinking, how is all of this true at once? I know all of these things are true because Scripture tells me so, but I do not understand how they work together, and any attempt to explain them ultimately falls into heresy like these (video)
While each person of the Trinity is equal in their deity and power they each have distinct roles, and we see those distinct roles clearly in our redemption
In Redemption – 2 Corinthians 1:21-22
2 Corinthians 1:21–22 NET
But it is God who establishes us together with you in Christ and who anointed us,who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a down payment.
From the Father – He calls or initiates – John 6:44
John 6:44 NET
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.
Through the Son – He saves or achieves – John 14:6
John 14:6 NET
Jesus replied, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
In or by the Spirit – He seals or employs – Ephesians 1:13-14
Ephesians 1:13–14 NET
And when you heard the word of truth (the gospel of your salvation)—when you believed in Christ—you were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit, who is the down payment of our inheritance, until the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of his glory.
All 3 are active and necessary in our lives at all times, how should we be praying in light of the Trinity
In Prayer
To the Father – Luke 11:1-2
Through the Son – John 14:13-14
In or by the Spirit – Romans 8:26-27
Who should you pray to? Just God in general or one person of the Trinity or to all three?
You can definitely pray to the Father, the Son, or the Holy Spirit. There is nothing in the Scriptures that say not to do that
But there is some help we find from the Scriptures that will help us as we grow in understanding our relationship with God through Christ
In Luke 11 we find what we refer to as “The Lord’s Prayer” or “The Model Prayer”. Let’s look at the very beginning of that in Luke 11:1-2
Luke 11:1–2 NET
Now Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he stopped, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” So he said to them, “When you pray, say: Father, may your name be honored; may your kingdom come.
So, here we see Jesus’ disciples asking Him to teach them to pray and Jesus taught them to pray to their Father in heaven
In John 14:13-14, Jesus tells those same disciples to pray in His name, which means to ask the Father with the same confidence and standing that Jesus Himself has in the Father’s presence
John 14:13–14 NET
And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.
That if you are a Christ-follower, you have the same access to the Father that Jesus does. We pray through the Son or in His name, with His standing
And because God is Spirit we pray in or by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is always praying what’s right when we don’t know what to pray. Look at Romans 8:26-27
Romans 8:26–27 NET
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how we should pray, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with inexpressible groanings. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes on behalf of the saints according to God’s will.
So, when you pray, you have the Holy Spirit already praying the right thing for you and you are just as accepted before that Father as Jesus is before Him
The activity of the Trinity in your prayer life is that involved and that essential
There’s never a moment that you are not near to the heart of your Father and through the doctrine of the Trinity we see how that is made possible and understand that more fully
