Verses of Interest:

Deuteronomy 6:1–9 ESV
“Now this is the commandment—the statutes and the rules—that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over, to possess it, that you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son’s son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long. Hear therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them, that it may go well with you, and that you may multiply greatly, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey. “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Introduction

Context: Entering into the promised land, Moses gives his final commands to Israel and renews the covenant with them.

Exposition

(1-3)

Deuteronomy 6:1–3 ESV
“Now this is the commandment—the statutes and the rules—that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over, to possess it, that you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son’s son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long. Hear therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them, that it may go well with you, and that you may multiply greatly, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.
So what follows is a command from God to all of Israel to do in the land.
Reason: it may go well with you, you may multiply greatly, your days may be long.
The context of this is not individual. (Israel as a whole, but also fathers to sons and grandsons) Generational.

(4-6)

Deuteronomy 6:4–6 ESV
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.
Shema: This is what the jews would say every morning when they got up (Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.)
Daily affirmation of Yahweh and he is the Only God.
Command: Love God. Who is that command to? Israel as a whole. Also, fathers, sons and grandsons particularly.
This shall be on your heart. What does that mean?
Internalization and Devotion
Not just knowing the commandments intellectually, but embracing them emotionally and spiritually. Deep personal commitment
Following God’s laws out of love, not mere duty or fear. Love-driven obedience
Constant mindfulness
God’s words should shape daily decisions, attitudes, and priorities. Always present in thought
They become the moral compass for life, influencing behavior even when no one is watching. Guiding principles
Lifelong meditation
Keeping the commandments “on your heart” implies continual meditation, not a one-time event. Ongoing reflection
It’s about shaping character over time, aligning desires with God’s will. Spiritual formation
Readiness to teach and share
What’s on the heart naturally flows into speech and conduct, especially in teaching children (as seen in verse 7). Overflow into action
A heart-centered faith is contagious and authentic. Foundation for discipleship

(7-9)

Deuteronomy 6:7–9 ESV
You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
This pattern is:
daily
Ordinary
Comprehensive
Fathers are to love the Lord with heart, soul, strength and not stop there.
Bring their families before God daily.
Just as the priests worked in the tabernacle/temple daily so the fathers were to daily teach and remind their family diligently all that the Lord has done.
Christ is our High Priest interceding for His bride before the father. So fathers are to intercede for his bride and his children.
We are not mediators in the same sense, but we stand before God for our households — pleading for them, leading them, and guarding them spiritually.
Job 1:5 ESV
And when the days of the feast had run their course, Job would send and consecrate them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my children have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts.” Thus Job did continually.
Ephesians 6:4 ESV
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
1 Thessalonians 2:11–12 ESV
For you know how, like a father with his children, we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.
Proverbs 22:6 ESV
Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.
It is in your hands to do them the greatest kindness or cruelty in all the world: help them to know God and to be saved, and you do more for them than if you helped them to be lords or princes: if you neglect their souls, and breed them in ignorance, worldliness, ungodliness and sin, you betray them to the devil, the enemy of souls; even as truly as if you sold them to him; you sell them to be slaves to satan; you betray them to him that will deceive them and abuse them in this life, and torment them in the next.
Richard Baxter (Puritan Divine); William Orme

Christ has fulfilled this perfectly

Christ as the true Son and Priest: Where Israel failed to love God with all their heart, Christ fulfilled the Shema perfectly.
Christ as Mediator: He intercedes for His bride (the church), modeling the priestly intercession that fathers echo in their households (though not in the same redemptive sense).
Union with Christ: Fathers, united to Christ, are called to reflect His priestly care by pleading for, leading, and guarding their families spiritually.

Doctrine

God commands covenant heads—especially fathers and husbands—to love Him with their whole being, to keep His Word upon their hearts, and to diligently instruct their households in it. In this way, the home becomes a sanctuary of worship and discipleship, and God’s blessing extends from one generation to the next. Christ Himself is our pattern and power in this work: as our great High Priest intercedes for His bride and washes her in the word , so fathers are to intercede for, lead, and guard the families entrusted to them.
Ephesians 5:25–26 “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself for her to make her holy, cleansing her with the washing of water by the word.”

Uses

Reflection:
Am I fulfilling this first command?
Do I love God?
Can I say I at least try to fulfill this command?
Exhortation:
Fulfill the second part of this!
Private Christian Education? Yes but not fully.
In the home lead. How?

Does not have to be long. Consistency is better.
Dads should know what the children can bare.
Steak vs. Milk
Story of Lost Sheep and Coin (Explain) Very very briefly

Hymnals are rich in theology. Practice for Sunday to sing with the Saints.
Psalms are Holy Hymns. Genevan Psalter.
Psalm 98:4 ESV
Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises!
Prayer
Talk to the living God.
Show your family how to pray.
Not long! Don’t exasperate your children.
My dad prays to God on my behalf and pleads for my soul!

Let family worship be performed consistently and at a time when it is most likely for the family to be free of interruptions.
Richard Baxter (Puritan Divine)
