21 And they went into Capernaum;

and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught.

22 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.

Capernaum:
Is a city in the region of the Galilee, the city is only mentioned in the Gospels. which was the headquarters of much of Jesus ministry.
Synagogue:
Transliteration of the Greek word synagōgē, meaning “a gathering together.” It is used more than 50 times in the NT, mostly for the religious gathering places of Jewish communities in Palestine and throughout the disperson.

synagogues were much of the nature of our churches, places where people ordinarily met together on the sabbath days, to worship God by prayer, and reading the law and the prophets, and hearing the words of exhortation,

The service consisted of prayer, praise, reading of scripture, and exposition by any rabbi or other competent person. Often Paul was invited to speak at such meetings.

In the book of Acts when Paul and barnabis were in Pisida in Antioch and they wanted to hear the word of the Lord and they went in to the synagogue .
Acts 13:15 “After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent a message to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have any word of encouragement for the people, say it.””
Jesus taught many times in the synagogue mostly in his Galilean ministry and probably in Judea.
22 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.
Jesus teaching and preaching Astonished the people who Heard him.
The word astonished or “exeplessanto” in the Greek paints a picture of an unfolding progressive event like in Luke 4:32 “and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word possessed authority.” Describing the amazement of The audience ,or in this way, “meaning to strictly to strike a person out of his senses by some strong feeling, such as fear ,wonder or even Joy.(Gould)
John Milhouse: Example
Im reminded of many times of my pastor teaching and preaching and it jst penetrating the deepest parts of my heart bringing Convection and great Joy to the souls of men.
Jesus taught not as men did , but had the anointing of the the spirit of God.
Isaiah 11:2 “And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and might,
the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.”
The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him.
WE read that in
Mark 1:10 “And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.”
The spirit of wisdom and understanding:
Jesus will Govern the people according to the principles of righteousness and Justice.
The Messiah will embody all of this ; He will be the ideal KIng.
Deuteronomy 1:15–17 “So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and experienced men, and set them as heads over you, commanders of thousands, commanders of hundreds, commanders of fifties, commanders of tens, and officers, throughout your tribes. And I charged your judges at that time, ‘Hear the cases between your brothers, and judge righteously between a man and his brother or the alien who is with him. You shall not be partial in judgment. You shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not be intimidated by anyone, for the judgment is God’s. And the case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.’”
The Spirit of council and might;
The Holy Spirit counsel is not advice, but Authoritative plans and decisions.
The fear of the Lord:
The Messiah would demonstrate in all His life the correct response to God; He will honor and obey Him.
Exodus 20:20 “Moses said to the people, “Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him may be before you, that you may not sin.””
Jesus authority didnt come from Men ,But came from God.
Amen.
Not as the scribes.
When the scribes taught the rearly spoke with authority like Jesus they commonely quoted their favorite Rabbis and taught traditions of men rather than teachings God word. They added traditions to the law that contradicted God”s word.
Were opponents of Jesus.
scribes were “teachers of the Law” religious experts who meticulously copied and interpritied the law of Moses. they often served as legal council, teachers and members of the Sanhedrin (Jewish governing council).
Their Roles and Authority
Experts in the Law: Scribes possessed extensive knowledge of the Old Testament and the Torah, making them the authorities on the Law.
Teachers and Interpreters: They were responsible for teaching and interpreting the Law to the people.
Legal and Administrative: Scribes handled legal matters, such as property and contracts, and some held influential positions in the Sanhedrin.
Copyists: In a largely illiterate society, their ability to copy religious and legal texts made them respected as authoritative figures.
Association with the Pharisees
Shared Beliefs: Most scribes were part of the Pharisaic party, though not all Pharisees were scribes, and vice-versa.
Common Conflict with Jesus: The scribes and Pharisees are often depicted together in the Gospels as they clashed with Jesus over his interpretation and application of the Law.
Criticism by Jesus
Hypocrisy: Jesus strongly criticized the scribes and Pharisees for their hypocrisy, noting they taught the Law but did not practice it.
Man-Made Traditions: He condemned them for adding traditions to the Law that hindered people from truly knowing God and sometimes contradicted Scripture.
Justification for His Death: The scribes were among the leaders who opposed Jesus and played a part in the events leading to his crucifixion.

23 Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. And he cried out,

24 saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”

25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!”

26 And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him.

27 Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? What new doctrine is this? For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.”

28 And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee.

Baker Encyclopedia of the Bible Synagogues in NT Times

Jesus frequently taught in synagogues (e.g.,

23 And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,

24 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.

25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.

26 And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.

27 And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.

28 And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee.

29 And forthwith, when they were come out of the synagogue, they entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.

30 But Simon’s wife’s mother lay sick of a fever, and anon they tell him of her.

31 And he came and took her by the hand, and lifted her up; and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them.

32 And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils.

33 And all the city was gathered together at the door.

34 And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him.

35 And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed. 36 And Simon and they that were with him followed after him. 37 And when they had found him, they said unto him, All men seek for thee. 38 And he said unto them, Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth. 39 And he preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out devils.
