Walking in the Way of the Cross: Bearing the Light
Text: John 12:1–8
Theme: True discipleship involves sacrificial love and reflecting Christ’s light to the world.
Introduction
Introduction
As we move deeper into Lent, our focus turns toward the way of the cross — the path Jesus walked, full of humility, sacrifice, and love.
In John 12, we see a moment of intimate devotion: Mary anoints Jesus’ feet with costly perfume and wipes them with her hair.
This is not just an act of worship; it is a symbol of discipleship: giving our best to Christ, even when it is costly, and bearing His light into the world.
1. The Context of Sacrifice
1. The Context of Sacrifice
Mary’s act is extravagant, personal, and sacrificial:
Extravagant: She uses expensive perfume, something that could have been sold to help the poor.
Personal: She kneels, touches, and wipes with her hair — a sign of deep intimacy.
Sacrificial: Her devotion costs her comfort, public approval, and social propriety.
Jesus values the heart behind the action. Worship, service, and discipleship are measured not by convenience or recognition, but by sacrificial love.
2. The Criticism She Faces
2. The Criticism She Faces
Judas protests: “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor?”
Here we see a common tension:
Practicality vs. devotion – Sometimes devotion feels extravagant or unnecessary to others.
External judgment vs. internal faithfulness – Critics may not understand the depth of our worship, but God does.
Jesus responds: “Leave her alone… She has done a beautiful thing for me.”
God honors faithful, loving devotion, even when it is costly or misunderstood.

3. Walking in the Way of the Cross
Mary’s act points forward to Jesus’ crucifixion.
The perfume symbolizes His anointing for burial.
Her sacrifice mirrors the self-giving love of Christ.
Discipleship is costly. Following Jesus often requires:
Sacrificing comfort, convenience, or possessions
Prioritizing God’s mission over public opinion
Embracing humility and service in ways that may go unnoticed
This is the essence of walking in the way of the cross: bearing the light of Christ through sacrificial love.
4. Bearing the Light
4. Bearing the Light
To bear the light means to reflect Christ in our lives:
In our relationships: showing kindness, forgiveness, and grace
In our work and community: acting with integrity, generosity, and justice
In our faith practice: living authentically, worshiping passionately, and serving selflessly
Like Mary, we may be misunderstood or judged, but our devotion matters to God.
Jesus says, “The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me.”
The priority of discipleship is knowing and honoring Christ in every season.
5. Spiritual Application
5. Spiritual Application
This week, reflect:
What am I willing to give sacrificially for Christ?
Where can I reflect His light in ways that may not be recognized or rewarded?
How can my devotion prepare me for the ultimate sacrifice of Good Friday?
Lent is not just about giving things up; it’s about giving ourselves to Christ, following Him, and allowing Him to work through us.
Conclusion
Conclusion
Mary’s fragrant gift at the feet of Jesus reminds us that:
True discipleship is costly but beautiful
True worship is sacrificial but transformative
True love reflects the light of Christ to the world
As we journey toward the cross, let us ask ourselves:
Are we walking in the way of the cross?
Are we willing to bear the light of Christ, even when it costs us something?
Mary’s example challenges us to offer our best to Jesus — our time, our gifts, our hearts — and to let His light shine through us.
Invitation:
This week, offer a tangible act of sacrificial devotion to Christ. Let it be a gift of time, resources, or service, done in love and humility. Notice how even small acts of devotion can reflect His light to others and deepen your relationship with Him.
