336. The Trial before Pilate (See no 338)
There are two things we see that all four gospels have in common.
He is brought before the governor, Pilate
Pilate asks him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”
We see that Matthew Mark and Luke all record Jesus being silent in response to the accusations.
John records Jesus having an extended conversation with Pilate.
337. Jesus before Herod
Only Luke Records this Event
338. Pilate Declares Jesus Innocent
John records Pilate saying “He is not guilty of any crime.”
In Luke Pilate says “I have examined him thoroughly on this point in your presence and find him innocent.”
Matthew is more cryptic in saying Pilate washes his hand of Jesus’ guilt.
339. Jesus or Barabbas?
All four Gospels record the crowd wanting Barabbas released rather than Jesus.
In Matthew Barabbas was “a notorious prisoner”
In Mark and John Barabbas was a “revolutionary” Mark adds “who had committed murder in an uprising.
Luke says Barabbas, “was in prison for taking part in an insurrection” and “for Murder.”
340. “Behold the Man!”
Matthew and Mark both spend 4 vs to the same thing:
dressed in purple, crown of thorns, taunted “Hail the King of the Jews,”
When they were finally tired of mocking him, they put his clothes back on him.
Difference in Matt and Mark: Matt includes scepter whereas Mark says they saluted him.
John records flogging with lead-tipped whip. also the purple robe and crown of thorns.
John also has another extended conversation between Pilate and Jesus.
341. Pilate Delivers Jesus to be Crucified
Matthew, Mark and John all state Pilate turned Jesus over to be crucified
Luke records that Jesus was turned over to them to do as they wished, but we know that they wanted him to be crucified, for they said that in vs 21
342. Jesus Mocked by the Soldiers
The Mocking of Jesus by the soldiers is interlaced in the events of his trial with a note that Luke does not record Jesus being mocked at that time nor by Pilate.
343. The Road to Golgotha
All three synoptics record Simon from Cyrene had to carry Jesus cross.
All three also record there were two others crucified with him.
Matt and Mark call them revolutionaries, Luke calls them criminals and John just says there were two others.
344. The Crucifixion
All four note the place of the crucifixion is called “Place of the Skull” Only Luke does not identify it’s Hebrew name-Golgotha
All four record the sign that Pilate put up
Matt records it as “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews”
Mark records it as “The King of the Jews”
Luke records it as “This is the King of the Jews”
John records it as “Jesus of Nazareth The King of the Jews.”
All four gospels says the gambled for his clothes
John indicates that his clothes was divided up but his robe was acquired by throwing dice.
Only John records Jesus give his mother to John to care for her.
John also records (as does Matthew later) that some women were standing at a distance.
Only Luke records Jesus saying, “Father forgive them for they do not know what they are doing.”
345. Jesus is Ridiculed on the Cross
Matthew records the people ridiculing Jesus, the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the elders
Mark records the people passing by ridiculed Jesus on the cross, the leading priests and teachers of religious law, and the two men who were crucified with him.
Luke records the crowd watching as the leaders scoffed at Jesus. The soldiers mocked him.
Matthew and Mark record the religious leaders saying “He saved others but he con’t save himself!”
Luke records “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!”
John does not record any mocking of Jesus while he is on the cross.
346. The Two Thieves
While all the Gospels record there were two men crucified with Jesus, only Luke records that one of them sought forgiveness, and Jesus obliged
