The Roman-Jewish historian Josephus describes John the Baptist as a "good man" who preached a message of righteousness, piety, and virtue, calling for Jews to be baptized for bodily purification. Josephus states that Herod Antipas executed John not due to a grudge over his illegal marriage to Herodias (as the Gospels suggest), but because he feared John's great influence over the crowds could incite a rebellion.
The Roman-Jewish historian Josephus mentions James the brother of Jesus in his work Antiquities of the Jews, detailing his execution by stoning at the hands of the Sanhedrin under High Priest Ananus ben Ananus around 62 CE
The Roman historian Tacitus wrote about Jesus in his work Annals, describing Christ's execution by Pontius Pilate during the reign of Tiberius and the existence of Christians in Rome. This passage, found in Book 15, Chapter 44, refers to the persecution of Christians by Emperor Nero after the Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD
