Scripture:
5 “And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
7 And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.
8 “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.
9 In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
15 But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Introduction:
This morning Jesus is teaching us the principles of prayer.
A. Give us This day Our Daily Bread
A. Give us This day Our Daily Bread
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
This is a petition for both Spiritual and Physical sustenance
AA. A Spiritual Feeding
AA. A Spiritual Feeding
This is prayer is not just feed me, but it is use me!
4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”
Jesus is showing us the importance of spiritual nourishment and dependence on God’s Word. It is just as vital as the food we eat.
“It is tragic to have full bellies and starving souls” -Willie Berry
We live in a time, at least in the majority of the west, that food is in abundance. We have so much access that we often take more than we need. We have door dashes and grub hubs to bring us food (Some that we don’t even touch). Yet it is not the lack of resources that plague us. It is the starving Soul. I submit to you this morning we must be dedicated couriers delivering the word of God to a nation and a world that is filled with starving souls!
32 But He said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.”
Jesus is showing us that our souls can be filled by doing the will of the Father and flowing in his purpose.
Many are spiritually hungry because they seek purpose in align with their carnal desires rather than alignment with Kingdom purpose and agenda
“When we run to the refrigerator, it is our stomach that has driven us there. When we run to service for our King, we are led by the hungry soul!”
Power Principle: “When we run to the refrigerator, it is our stomach that has driven us there. When we run to service for our King, we are led by the hungry soul!”
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.
Are you empty on the inside? Dive into the work of our King! Submit to a purpose that is higher than our own!
BB. A Physical Trusting
BB. A Physical Trusting
We often neglect the spirit in pursuit of physical sustenance. Christ wants us focused on God and trusting our father for provision. This does not mean we abandon meaningful and productive work. We are designed to work produce and create. But when we allow those pursuits overtake our focus of seeking the King we are left spiritually and mentally imbalanced. We are to input our effort in the natural and trust God for the increase. We are never to neglect our soul for provision. We are to trust God to bless the work of our hands and not create a spiritual deficit in pursuit of worldly riches.
7 Two things have I required of thee; Deny me them not before I die:
8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: Give me neither poverty nor riches; Feed me with food convenient for me:
9 Lest I be full, and deny thee, And say, Who is the Lord? Or lest I be poor, and steal, And take the name of my God in vain.
B. Debt Forgiveness
B. Debt Forgiveness
12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.
This shows an acknowledgement where we fall short and the self awareness to treat others with the Grace we wish to receive
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
When we pray our focus is not just the reception of forgiveness, but the extension of it.
When is the last time we prayed for the good of our enemies?
When is the last time we gave the benefit of the doubt to others that we so earnestly crave?
“Forgive them for they know not…”
Our prayers can be reciprocal in nature
Action: This morning, think of the one who have harmed and wronged you a pray this prayer:
Father, forgive them.
Father, I release them
Father, restore
Father, If they are not saved, save them
Father, Bless them
Give them every bit of grace that I would desire and more!
C. Guide Me Lord
C. Guide Me Lord
13 And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
Give me guidance to navigate the world and avoid the pitfalls of sin. Build my character and soul that I may crave you more than the passions and lusts of the world.
13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
Lord Help me recognize and avoid compromising decisions
Lord help me recognize compromising situations.
Lord give the strength to avoid or exit those things early
