Intro

Good morning church fam! So last week we dove into the concept that there is more to our walk with God. Jesus has more for us and desires to speak more to us while we are walking on this planet. Through the Holy Spirit there is more.
I want to continue along with that idea and I want to dive a little deeper into the subject of Holy Spirit. I think too many believers stop short in their walk with Christ in the sense they come to the cross for salvation, but never go any further. There are those who don’t go any further either because they don’t want to or they just were never taught.
Part of my calling as your pastor is to teach you and encourage you to dive deeper into your relationship with Jesus.
Matthew 28:18–20 NASB95
18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
As one who makes disciples, as I am learning, I am called to teach what I learn to others. You too are called to do the same. I don’t want you as followers of Christ to stop short of what God has for you. Many do - they love God - but because there might be some confusion about Holy Spirit or they were not taught correctly, they stop short and never seek out the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
There is a difference between the indwelling of Holy Spirit and the baptism of Holy Spirit. Both are essential, but they are not the same. One is about salvation and the other is about empowerment and service. One gets you to heaven and the other helps you bring heaven to earth.
So let’s dive into it this morning.
As I mentioned there is a difference between the indwelling of Holy Spirit and baptism of Holy Spirit.

Holy Spirit is Received at Salvation

When you accept Christ as your Lord and Savior, it is at that point you receive the indwelling of Holy Spirit. He dwells within you. It is not something that you have to wait for or ask for, He is just there. He takes up residence in your heart.
Ephesians 1:13 NASB95
13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,
Paul says that once you hear the message of truth, the Gospel of Jesus, the Gospel of you salvation, you are sealed with Holy Spirit. He is in you.
The picture that Paul is painting here has a really deep meaning. When you read the opening of Paul’s letter you will find that a believer is:
Chosen by the Father
Redeemed by the Son
and then sealed by Holy Spirit
This word sealed means to:
to stamp
to mark ownership
to authenticate or certify
to secure and protect
In biblical times seals meant something. They were not just a decorative piece on a letter or envelope. There was deep meaning behind it. They carried significant legal, social, and spiritual meaning.
The seal was an authentication of a document. Seals were placed on official letters or decrees to prove they were genuine. When a king would place his signet ring in hot wax and then press it on the document it marked it as authentic and authoritative.
When God seals you with Holy Spirit, He is authenticating your faith. Your salvation is authentic and not a counterfeit for you now bear the ROYAL SEAL of heaven.
If you have accepted Christ as Lord and Savior and you are following Him, don’t ever let anyone tell you that you are not saved. Don’t ever allow the enemy to call into question your salvation because you have been sealed by Holy Spirit! You belong to God.
The indwelling of Holy Spirit shows that you belong to God. It gives you identity!
2 Timothy 2:19 NASB95
19 Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal, “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Everyone who names the name of the Lord is to abstain from wickedness.”
This seal is also a sign of protection and security. When these seals were placed on tombs, containers, doors, or documents and were broken there were serious consequences. In fact it was considered a capitol offense and often meant death to the one who broke it.
This is significant when Jesus tomb was sealed in Matthew 27.
Matthew 27:66 NASB95
66 And they went and made the grave secure, and along with the guard they set a seal on the stone.
Even kings themselves could not revoke a sealed decree without serious consequences.
Esther 8:8 NASB95
8 “Now you write to the Jews as you see fit, in the king’s name, and seal it with the king’s signet ring; for a decree which is written in the name of the king and sealed with the king’s signet ring may not be revoked.”
I share this so that you know when you come to Jesus and accept His Lordship over your life…no one can take your salvation away from you. Stop questioning if you are saved or not. If you accepted Jesus YOU are SEALED!
John 10:28–29 NASB95
28 and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. 29 “My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.
Now…this brings up the question that I must address. Can someone walk away from salvation?
Here is something we need to understand. Salvation is not one time transaction. It’s a relationship. Jesus calls Himself the Good Shepherd and His sheep know His voice, follow Him, and are known by Him.
Eternal life is a gift. It is not a contract. Jesus gives it and it is not dependent on our performance. Believer’s are secure in Jesus hand and no external power can remove them. Not only are believers in the hand of Jesus, but also the Father. It is like double security.
Understanding this, now to answer the question can someone walk away from salvation? There are two views on this:
Eternal Security
Conditional Security
Eternal security says that true believers cannot lose their salvation. There are those who believe that if a believer walks away they were never saved to begin with. This is based on:
John 6:37 NASB95
37 “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out.
Romans 8:38–39 NASB95
38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Conditional security is the view that God won’t force you to stay.
Hebrews 6:4–6 NASB95
4 For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.
2 Peter 2:20–21 NASB95
20 For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21 For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from the holy commandment handed on to them.
So which is it? Eternal or conditional security?
I don’t believe it is either or but rather both. Here are two truths we must hold onto:
God’s power to keep us is ABSOLUTE NOTHING can take us away from God. NO ONE can take our salvation.
Our call to ABIDE and PERSEVERE is REAL
While no one can take away salvation, it is on us to make sure that we abide in the presence of Jesus and persevere in all trials and tribulations.
As followers of Jesus, we should walk in confidence and not complacency. Constantly growing in the knowledge of who the Father, Jesus, and Holy Spirit. We will fall. We will mess up. But a sheep doesn’t become a wolf just because it wanders off from time to time…it is still a sheep. But a true sheep will hear and heed to the Shepherds call.
This is why we need more than just an indwelling of Holy Spirit. Thank God for salvation, but DON’T stop at the cross. This is the beginning and not the end. There is more if you dive deeper!

Baptism of Holy Spirit = POWER

The indwelling of Holy Spirit is salvation and in order to keep walking with Jesus we need more than just an indwelling.
We need to be FILLED with POWER!
There is more to our salvation. Not more to be saved, but more God wants to do in the life of a believer. Why else would Jesus tell us to ask!
Luke 11:13 NASB95
13 “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”
If we had all that we need, why would Jesus tell us to ask? When we ask we will RECEIVE!
In John 4 Jesus in Samaria meets a woman at the well around noontime. As He is speaking to this woman He makes this statement:
John 4:13–14 NASB95
13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”
Here we see Jesus speaking about salvation. Eternal life is salvation. He was telling this woman who was living a lifestyle of sin - had multiple husbands and is currently shacking up with a guy - was in need of saving. He tells her He can give her eternal life. The moment she accepts Jesus as Savior was the moment Holy Spirit indwelled her and sealed her.
But there is more. Flip over to John 7. Here we see Jesus once again speaking about this living water, but we see Jesus taking it a step further.
John 7:37 NASB95
37 Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.
When we drink the water that Jesus offers it is unto salvation. But there is more. He takes them a little deeper to give them a heads up that there is more to come.
John 7:38–39 NASB95
38 “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ ” 39 But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
He who believes in me, salvation…will not just have a water spring up inside of them, but when Holy Spirit comes, they can have access to not just a well…but a RIVERS (plural) that bursts out of them.
The baptism of the Holy Spirit isn’t something to be contained (you can try, but you can’t), but it will POUR out of the life of the believer.
In Acts chapter 2 we see this take place in the early church. Jesus tells the disciples to go and wait. We see 120 disciples of Jesus…those who believe…experience the MORE that Jesus was speaking about.
Acts 1:5 NASB95
5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
Acts 2:4 NASB95
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.
In John chapter 20 the disciples already received the Holy Spirit…the indwelling, but Jesus told them to wait for the baptism. Why? Because the baptism of Holy Spirit isn’t about salvation…it is about EMPOWERMENT!
It’s when Holy Spirit doesn’t just live in you, but He pours out of you and equips you for ministry, witnessing, and the ability to stand on the spiritual authority of God.
The baptism of the Holy Spirit isn’t about a spiritual high. Too often that’s what people seek after. They search for the goose bumps. They search for the good feelings. While these things are not bad in and of themselves, we have to be careful not to forget the reason behind being baptized in Holy Spirit.
Being baptized in Holy Spirit is for a global mission. Remember what Jesus said.
Acts 1:8 NASB95
8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
In the very next chapter those in the Upper Room were baptized by Holy Spirit and Peter who denied Jesus three times in public…boldly and with power shared the Gospel message of Jesus telling all who were there that day that Jesus is the Lord and the Messiah!
Acts 2:36 NASB95
36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ—this Jesus whom you crucified.”
His sermon that day pierced the hearts of 3,000 men and they asked Peter, “What do we do?”
His response?
Acts 2:38 NASB95
38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
You see church, when those who don’t know Jesus come to us with their life broken and a mess and everything around them is crushing them…we need to offer the Gospel to them. We cannot be afraid to share Jesus with those around us. When you have been Holy Spirit baptized there is a holy unction that swells up in you and just pours out pointing to people their need for a Savior.
Imagine church if everyone under the sound of my voice were Holy Spirit filled and went out into Corning and witnessed to those they come into contact this week and shared Jesus with them…we wouldn’t be able to hold all the people in the church on Sundays! We would have to go to multiple services. There is a mission that comes along with the baptism.
When the Spirit poured out that day the gift of speaking in tongues was given. This happens throughout the book of Acts.
Acts 2 the 120 were all speaking in tongues
Acts 10 Cornelius’ household received Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues
Acts 19 Paul laid hands on the Ephesian disciples, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied
Every time the Spirit was poured out, something supernatural happened that everyone can witness. It wasn’t a vague feeling or a silent internal change - it was an outward demonstration of an inward feeling. Out of your belly will flow rivers of living water!

Tongues is a Supernatural Prayer Language

Speaking in tongues is not just a sign - it’s a gift. It’s a supernatural language given by the Holy Spirit that bypasses the limits of our human vocabulary and connects us directly to God.
I was sharing with someone awhile back about speaking in tongues and they told me they don’t believe in it because they don’t know what is being said. I told them that when someone prays over you tongues that prayer is for you but not to you.
1 Corinthians 14:2 NASB95
2 For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries.
I preached on this before where there is different types of speaking in tongues. There are three:
Different Kind Tongues - Paul speaks about this in 1 Corinthians 12. This type is done and there is an interpretation.
Tongues as a sign to unbelievers - Paul speaks about this in 1 Corinthians 14. It is a sign to those who don’t believe.
Prayer in Tongues
This is what Paul is referring to in 1 Corinthians 14:14. It is between you and God when you pray in tongues. Sometimes we don’t know what to pray. We don’t have the words to pray. When you are baptized in Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit knows what to pray.
Tongues is a heavenly language flowing through human lips.
A divine conversation between your spirit and God’s Spirit.
Imagine trying to explain deep emotions with a limited vocabulary. You’d struggle to express what’s truly in your heart. But tongues is like heaven handing you a new vocabulary — one that perfectly expresses what your spirit feels but your mind cannot articulate.
Here is the cool thing about praying in tongues. It builds you up and encourages you.
1 Corinthians 14:4 NASB95
4 One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church.
Edify means to build up, strengthen, or charge. There are times when you can’t get a hold of anyone to encourage you and you have to build yourself up in the spirit.
Praying in tongues is like plugging your spirit into a divine power source. It charges your inner man and builds spiritual endurance.
There are times when I don’t know what to pray or I need encouragement. I will begin to pray in tongues and God just moves. I feel refreshed and recharged. I fell as though I can take on the world. I remember once I was in the sanctuary of a church that we pastored at in Indiana and I just felt defeated. I put worship music on and I began to pray in tongues. God lifted my spirit up and I had church by myself!
This is why the enemy tries so hard to make believers afraid of tongues. He knows that a believer who prays in the Spirit is a believer who walks in power, victory, and intimacy with God!
Tongues are not about being weird — they are about being empowered. They’re a gift, not a requirement. They don’t make you more “saved” — they just make you more effective for the Kingdom of God!

God wants to Overflow in Your Life

**Call for Piano**
As we close today I want you to know that I don’t know everything when it comes to leading, pastoring, or following Jesus. But I do know this for a fact.
God wants to OVERFLOW in your Life!
The Holy Spirit isn’t just a doctrine to learn about - He’s a DIVINE Person who wants to no only fill you, but overflow and empower your life.
Salvation is the beginning…Holy Spirit baptism is the breakthrough. Jesus is still baptizing believers today just like He did in Acts and He wants to fill you.
John the Baptist said this about Jesus:
Matthew 3:11 NASB95
11 “As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Altar Call

Today I want to invite all who desire to beyond salvation and step into that POWER. If you have never been baptized in the Holy Spirit - if you want that overflow, that prayer language, that boldness - this is your moment.
It’s simple. Come forward. Ask and receive.
Luke 11:13 NASB95
13 “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”
Let’s ask God for it.
