Disciples Commissioned

Open your bible with me to Luke 9:1-9
In April 1970, the Apollo 13 mission faced one of the most dramatic crises in space exploration history. An oxygen tank exploded aboard the spacecraft, crippling the mission and putting the lives of astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise in grave danger, millions of miles from Earth.
Back in Houston, NASA’s mission control team was sent with authority, expertise, and responsibility to bring the astronauts home safely. These men and women had to trust their training and each other, making critical decisions in the midst of uncertainty and immense pressure. Meanwhile, the astronauts themselves had no choice but to live by faith—trusting mission control’s guidance even when their survival seemed impossible.
Through tireless ingenuity, prayer, and reliance on God’s providence, the team developed life-saving procedures, and the astronauts obeyed instructions with precision and faith. Against all odds, the crew returned safely to Earth, hailed as heroes and a testament to what can be accomplished when authority, trust, and faith align.
This story powerfully echoes the mission Jesus gives His disciples in Luke 9. Jesus sends His followers with divine authority and power to proclaim the Kingdom of God, heal the sick, and announce the good news of salvation. They are called to fully trust God’s provision as they step into uncertain, often hostile environments. Like the astronauts and mission controllers, the disciples must live by faith, depending on God’s guidance, even when success is NOT guaranteed.
And just as Apollo13’s mission control ultimately triumphed and the astronauts were saved, the Gospel mission also bears fruit. Many will respond in faith and repentance. However, some will reject the message, and others—like Herod in Luke 9—will be troubled but remain unconverted.
Today, as Christ’s disciples, we inherit that same call: to go with power, trust God completely, and live by faith as we proclaim the Kingdom in our generation, confident that God is sovereign over both the sending and the success of the mission.
Sermon Summary: Jesus sends His disciples to preach with power, trust God, and live by faith!
1 And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. 3 And he said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics. 4 And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. 5 And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.” 6 And they departed and went through the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere. 7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead, 8 by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen. 9 Herod said, “John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” And he sought to see him.
You know until the point. Jesus has been preaching and teaching. Luke has been centering his narrative on the person and work of Jesus. And the trajectory is about to take a major pivot later in this chapter, when Jesus sets his face toward Jerusalem. You are going to feel the urgency shift, and everything is building towards this question: “Who is Jesus?” But before Luke gets to the grand reveal. He wants to show us two very short but important aspects. The sending of his disciples and the feeding of the 5000. We’ll see the sending of the 12 this morning and the feeding of the 5000 next Sunday.

I. Christ Sends With Authority and Power (v.1-2)
I. Christ Sends With Authority and Power (v.1-2)
1 And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal.
The disciples have had a front row seat to the incredible power and teaching of Jesus. All throughout Luke, we’ve seen multitudes of crowds and people to be AMAZED and astonished at Jesus’ teaching. They are left in awe and wonder of Jesus' power to heal. The disciples, to this point, have been witnessing these things for at least a couple of years, watching Jesus. Seeing him care for others, seeing his compassion, and insight into the text of scripture. And now Jesus turns to his closest disciples, the 12, and empowers them into the very task He has displayed before them.
You recall, Jesus calling the 12 disciples in Luke 5. You see him inviting them into his ministry and teaching them in Luke 6. You see them drawing near in ministry with the woman with a discharge of blood and into Jarius’ home to witness his daughter being raised to life. And now, Jesus commissions them to service in His kingdom.
Notice three primary verbs in verses 1-2. It is Jesus who called them!! This is Jesus' idea. This is his commission. This is his authority. Jesus, who is in control. And now calling them together. A particle in the Greek. And as He is calling them. 2nd verb - Jesus gives to them power and authority.
Now, Power, you could say, is the ability to do something. Authority is the right to exercise that power. This is the power and authority of Christ himself. Now, he gave it to his disciples. The 12, who now possess the same authority of Jesus to serve in the kingdom of Christ. And what was the kingdom coming to look like? That is the GOOD NEWS being preached. That the lame walk, the oppressed set free! Bonds are being broken. Freedom to the captive! Sickness and diseases being healed!! Everything you see Jesus doing brings the kingdom -of God’s righteous rule in the world!!! Now the disciples have been granted the authority to preach the good news and bring the kingdom on earth as it is in heaven!
In the controversy with the Pharisees, when Jesus healed the demon-possessed man…Jesus says
27 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
This was a signpost of the kingdom coming. It was a demonstration that the reign and rule of Christ had come to earth. This is what Luke has been showing us. It’s what Jesus has been demonstrating. That He has authority over sickness, disease, creation, demons, and even death!! And Jesus now imparts that authority and reign, sovereignty, and control that He possesses over all creation, in heaven and on earth. He imparts that authority, grants that authority to the 12! To demonstrate and proclaim God’s rule and reign on earth as it is in heaven!! You think what John’s message of repentance entails REPENT – FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS NEAR…..Now, Jesus declares God’s KINGDOM has come!! And it is marked by HIS authority and sovereignty, now extended to HIS disciples!! As they too possess authority over all demons and disease!!
And then the third verb – He sent them! (apostello) To SEND…where we get the word apostle, which means sent one or messenger. To go and continue in the very mission and task of Jesus. To continue in the way of Christ – to the task of preaching – proclaiming the kingdom of God, and demonstrating the kingdom through healing and acts of mercy. This is the fulfillment of what Jesus called his disciples to: that from now on you will be catching men (Luke 5:10). And now they have been called, empowered, and sent to the purpose!
And this is what you see the Apostle doing in the book of Acts. They preach the gospel! The call men and women to repentance and faith in Christ, and the power of God is demonstrated in great power through miraculous healings, which proved the kingdom of God had indeed come! So the apostles weren’t demonstrating their power or greatness. But of the power and greatness of the one who had CALLED THEM, WHO EMPOWERED THEM, and WHO SENT THEM! They were pointing to the kingdom of God, and the hope of the kingdom found in Jesus the Messiah!
You know, there was nothing impressive about these men. They were Galilean fishermen. These were the least likely to have been men of any nobility or to yield great influence or power. And that’s really the point. They aren’t going in their power or might. They aren’t going to impress with their skills or knowledge. They are sent, commissioned, and given authority by the one who possesses all authority and power! It was to be a display of the power of Christ in them, NOT from them. This authority and power is given and extended to them, but it's NOT from them. It’s the authority of Jesus, extended to them.
There would have been nothing in these disciples that would have been worthy of fulfilling this mission apart from the empowering of Christin them. We saw this last week (ACTS 1:8), that the apostles in fulfilling the mission of Christ would be dependent on the power of Christ and His Spirit for the mission to which he has called.
And beloved, the same is true for us today. That Jesus has NOT merely called us. But by His Spirit, He empowers us to follow Him and equips us to serve within His kingdom and mission in the world. Now, I want to be clear. We aren’t apostles. We haven’t been given the power to raise the dead or cast out demons by touch. But we have been called by the same Savior, filled with the same Spirit, and sent on the same mission — to proclaim the good news of God’s kingdom, and to demonstrate the kingdom of God through compassion and mercy.
So notice that it is a proclamation of the KINGDOM that is first! The preaching of the gospel is primary. Even for the Apostles here. And it was primary for Jesus. Remember back in Luke 4: after Jesus heals many, Jesus says healing is great, but preaching of the gospel is better! It was for this reason I came. I MUST PREACH THE GOOD NEWS!! (Luke 4:43) ….The healings were merely demonstrations to confirm the primary message of preaching!!
And so in the same way, we too have been called to proclaim the GOSPEL! To preach, in our own power? NO! But in the strength that God supplies. So it’s logical and reasonable to say, I can't do this. I’m NOT able. I’m NOT smart enough. I don’t know enough. I can’t….Or what about…Beloved, it’s NOT about your strength or ability, but the strength and power and authority that Jesus gives!! And to that end, he has called us to the same end– to go and proclaim the KINGDOM of GOD!!
And so while we don’t have this apostolic power, we do share in this same commission. But our words and deeds ought NOT to be separated either. Lest we only preach and demonstrate no concern for the needs of those in affliction and suffering. Lest we preach and be unconcerned with the needs of others. To which, we are called in this way, to care for the souls of men, but also care for the real pain and hurt of those living in this fallen world. That we care for the soul and spiritual needs, but aren’t deaf to their physical needs, and do seek to extend compassion and grace to the afflicted, and point them to a savior who loves and cares for them. And demonstrated the compassion and mercy of Christ in their affliction in order to point them to the Savior and a better kingdom and better hope than anything in this world!
Do you feel inadequate? Do you feel unworthy? Do you feel unable? It is to this end, Beloved, that Christ has called us. He has sent us….But He sends with HIS authority and HIS power to accomplish his work!
--------------------------------------------------- Christ Sends With Authority and Power
II. Trust in God’s Provision and Providence (v.3-6)
II. Trust in God’s Provision and Providence (v.3-6)
You know, one of the challenges of living in Christ is for our faith to keep up with our knowledge. You know, within these first two verses, we have verbal realities of calling, sending, and giving. But now, Jesus is going to give his disciples commands to exerciseNOT just their responsibility but their faith to trust Jesus for His call on their lives. Jesus, in short, tells them to travel light and, in so doing, to TRUST His provision and care for them!
Now, when I travel, I try to pack light. I never seem to accomplish my intended goal. Regardless, they always come back with more clean clothes than dirty clothes. I’m always concerned with hitting the weight limit on luggage for flights, and my wife can tell you, I pack more shoes for a trip than anything else. I mean, if there is a suitcase, I’m going to fill it up…But Jesus tells them to the contrary. He commands– TAKE NOTHING for your journey.
Now, there are various takes as you read other gospel accounts. Were they to take no staff, or just not an extra staff? Were they to take a tunic, or just have one tunic? But Jesus' point is certainly clear in all of the gospel accounts. Travel light. Pack light and be NOT dependent on your stuff. You are to instead trust God! They are to be dependent on God for the task. For God to sustain them! For God to provide for them!
Now, Jesus is cluing us into a few things in saying this. First, he’s showing us that the URGENCY of the task of preaching the gospel and the coming kingdom. The time is short, and there is no time to pack and collect items for your journey. You must go now!! You must put your hand to the plow and not look back!!
Secondly, He is pointing us to Divine Supply. You are NOT to take a staff for protection! You are to trust the Lord to protect you. You are NOT to take a bag. There is disagreement of the purpose of this bag, but it is likely a bag for supply. Instead, you are to trust the Lord to supply you. No bread, that is, you are NOT to worry about your food; you are to instead trust God to supply you with food to eat! As much as you may feel you need money for provision. You are leaving the American Express behind!! God will supply your needs. You aren’t even allowed to take an extra change of clothes!! Just go with the clothes on your back, preach the gospel, and trust the LORD for provision and supply!
When you go and enter a house, stay there. Jesus means that His disciples were to distinguish themselves from a common practice of philosophers that may stay in a home, but then a better one comes, so they upgrade for their own benefit and gain. This house has a better view of the city. This house was fine untilI was offered a better offer of clean linens and a separate luxury apartment. In other words, they were looking for better offers for luxury or peddling for more money or comfort, they were to instead completely trust what God provided for them, and recognize His providence over their lives, NOT looking for selfish advancement or gain!
In everything, they were to completely and totally surrender their lives and will to HIM! That if he had called them, if he had empowered them, and if he had SENT Them….Then the Lord himself will sustain them!
Beloved, we may NOT feel that we have an adequate supply. We may feel we need more. If we only had this or if we only had that, then the ministry would be more effective. It would accomplish so much more! If we only had this or that….Beloved, the point is we only need the provision of the Lord, and what He supplies is always sufficient for the task to which He calls!! That’s true in your life, that’s true in a church, and that’s true in ministry. God may NOT always give us abundance, but He always gives us enough to accomplishHis purposes in and through us! And for the disciples, they didn’t need a change of clothes, they didn’t need to seek an upper hand or platform, they didn’t need to worry about food or provision, but to fully and completely trust the Lord in all things!!
And then finally, the Lord teaches his disciples here is to trust His Decisive Rule over all things. You have known Jesus since he came on the scene. Has divided his audience. Crowds would continually be divided over him. Some believe and others reject him. Some fall down and worship upon hearing the Good news, and others rejectHim and walk away in unbelief! Jesus is constantly dividing the audience if you will….and that will continue and is to be expected when His disciples go and preach the gospel! People will be varied in their response to the Good News of the Kingdom coming!
5 And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.” 6 And they departed and went through the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.
Jesus says, anticipates that NOT everyone will receive you. NOT everyone will accept this good news in faith! So when you encounter others who do NOT receive you. SHAKE THE DUST FROM YOUR FEET. Now this term is a Lukan term. Luke uses this term again of the Apostle Paulin Acts 28, when he is bitten by a serpent and SHAKESit off His hand! Jesus says, SHAKE THE DUST OFF YOUR FEET.
Now, this was an act declaring Judgement against them. When Jews traveled outside of Palestine, they were commanded to SHAKE THE DUST OFF, before returning to ISRAEL, lest they pollute the land from uncleanliness. It was a way of declaring the rightness of God’s way, despite rejection of Him in the world. Hence, why is it to be as A TESTIMONY AGAINST THEM!!
That you have rejected God! You have rejected His gospel! You have NOT responded in faith, but do NOT stand in judgment, unless you repent! The news has been preached, and now you can’t say you didn’t know! It will be evidence against them on that great and final day. They heard the NEWS OF THE KINGDOM but turned away!
And so, the disciples do that, we see them going from village to village, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere!! That is NOT in GENTILE lands, but in Jewish villages. Oh man, this is stunning. Jesus and News of Him is once again dividing the audience! He’s dividingHis own people. Here is a Gentile figure of speech being applied to Ethnic ISRAEL. It’s NOT the Gentiles that are to be judged for NOT receiving Jesus, but the Jews! Jesus is signaling a turning point: the kingdom of Godisn't inherited by birth, but received by faith. That would have been a radical message — even for the people of Israel.
In fact, this is the basis of all judgment. Have you trusted Jesus in faith or not!!?? And being a part of the Kingdom of God is NOT on the basis of ETHNICITY! It’s NOT on the basis of RACE or NATIONAL affiliation! There would be many in Israel to reject Jesus, and Paul says in
6 But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, 7 and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring, but “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” 8 This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring.
The kingdom doesn’t come through our flesh or our works, or our efforts, or NATION, TRIBE, ETHNICITY. But it is instead a matter of faith.
And Jesus says you TRUST GOD with everything. You trust in him for your provision. You go with great urgency! You go with great dependence! You go with great trust in His provision and providence. You don’t need to look for a leg up. Or for comfort. You don’t need more. You need to trust the Lord. And you don’t need to look for the ELECT! You need only preach the gospel! You need only to trust God!! You need only know God is in control. He will divide the audience. Some will believe in faith, and others will turn away! But that’s NOT your prerogative. That is HIS! So you trust God in everything! You look to Godin faith. Knowing He has called you, empowers, and sends you. To TRUST HIM!!
Beloved, the call to follow Jesus is NOT a call to comfort, control, or convenience—it is a call to complete dependence. Just like the disciples, we are NOT sent out with all the answers or all the resources. We are sent with a message and a Master who promises to provide. So let me ask you: What are you still holding onto that’s keeping you from trusting God fully? Is it your stuff or a lack thereof? Your reputation? Your sense of security? Jesus says, Take nothing for the journey— NOT because He wants you empty, but because He wants you to discover that He is enough. God’s provision will meet you when you step out in obedience. The urgency of the gospel requires that we stop waiting until we feel “ready” and start trusting the One who sends us. The question is NOT whether you have enough—it’s whether you’re willing to go with what you already have, trusting the God who has already gone before you.
--------------------------------------------------- Trust in God’s Provision and Providence
III. A Test Case – Convicted but Not Converted (v.7-9)
III. A Test Case – Convicted but Not Converted (v.7-9)
Luke, after demonstrating the variety of responses to Jesus, states that some will receive Jesus while others will reject the ministry of the Disciples' preaching and bringing the kingdom. Now, Luke really gives to us a test case. A real-life demonstration of one who is acquainted with Jesus, even curious about Jesus, but fails to respond to Jesus in faith.
Jesus has once again divided the audience. Now Herod, who we know from earlier in Luke, had some run-ins with John the Baptist. He heard of Kingdom Coming. And threw John into Prison. John's expectation of Jesus was that He would come with both healing and judgment. And now that judgment is being demonstrated NOT in a literal fire coming, but in unbelief and those walking away from Jesus, doubt, and lacking in faith.
So Herod was frustrated with John’s preaching, throws John into prison, and eventually we learn from verse 9 that Herod beheaded John the Baptist. But this wouldn’t stop the kingdom of God from coming…And here is the kingdom of God on the move, shaking the entire known world in Galilee.
And man, Herod can't figure this out. Luke uses a word that – He was PERPLEXED. This is another Lukan term. He’s the only gospel writer who uses this word. And the word means to be at a loss. He’s just more than confused. He’s perplexed. He’s just lost about what could be happening here! The same word is used when Peter receives this vision from the Lord in Acts 10:17, of all these animals of clean and unclean, and he hears a voice from the Lord saying, ARISE AND EAT. What does this mean…And now, HEROD IS just at a loss!!
He's got nothing!! And here is a man who, according to this world, has everything at his disposal. But it is now at a great loss. And it’s these disciples, who have nothing, and the news of the gospel is spreading through them. And they, though they have nothing according to this world, have everything in Jesus!! And Herod is at a loss!!
So he’s trying to figure this out…And well, maybe it’s John who has been raised! Maybe he’s come back. I’ve heard others saying he is Elijah, and that Elijah, who was anticipated to return. And others are saying another prophet has come! He knows He’s beheaded John, this can’t be him, right?. SO WHO IS THIS ABOUT WHOM I HEAR such things!!
Herod is troubled. He doesn’t know what to do. And he’s begging the question of Luke’s gospel. Everyone has been asking it. And now even HEROD the Tetrarch is asking the question – WHO IS JESUS!!
Herod is thinking deeply about this. This is a troubled conscience. For him to think, man, has John come back from the dead? That’s deep trouble in the soul of a man. He’s at a loss and troubled in his heart. He can’t figure this out!!
That is, He is perplexed, but he remains in blindness. His conscience is defiled, but he remains in sin and darkness. He is curious but remains spiritually blind. He is plagued by guilt, confused by Jesus, but never willfully repents! His heart is troubled, but he remains unmoved by Jesus! Herod wants a show from Jesus, He’s NOT interested in a savior!
Herod is looking and curious about this – I’ve beheaded John. Maybe I’ll need to kill this guy as well. So he sought to see Him. And Herod is in the cross hairs, of thinking about hearing the word, and seeing the Kingdom come through Jesus. But he is more concerned with seeing Jesus. Hearing isn’t enough for Him. He wants to lay eyes on Him. And what you’ll see later in Luke’s gospel, he wants to kill Jesus in Luke 13, and then in Luke 23, just before Jesus is crucified the encounter happens…See, Luke is setting us up for this encounter with Herod later, in which Herod will see Jesus, and he will be utterly unimpressed with Jesus.
And that is because Herod is a man who refuses to submit to Jesus by faith, but instead insists on living in his own strength and understanding. And here is a man who, upon hearing the word of God and of the Kingdom, is unimpressed, and insists, I MUST SEE HIM to examine what I believe of Him. But this is NOT the way of faith, but rather the way of the flesh. Faith, you see, comes by? ….HEARING and Hearing by the word Christ(Romans 10:17).
See, faith comes by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit!! Faith is a gift from God to believe in the Son of God! To TRUST JESUS! See Faith, believes even when we cannot see!! Faith is demonstrated when we receive the words and teaching of Jesus – who receive as the parable of soil…WHO hears THE WORD and believes it! Who receives the word and obey!! Whose hearts have been transformed by the grace of GOD!!
Beloved, true conversion is the work of the Spirit of God. He births a new heartin us! That we are NOT merely curious of Jesus, but our hearts are conformed to Jesus. That His grace overcomes our guilt, and we don’t live any longer in despair or defiance, but in faith we repent and trust Jesus for salvation. And it’s the only cure for a defiled conscience. It’s the only hope for a seared conscience. It’s the only peace for a troubled conscience that we come to Christ and rest in HIM! That we NOT just be convicted of our wrongdoing, but we be converted and transformed from a life of sin and death to NEW LIFE in Christ! BUT HEROD wouldn’t do it! He remained at a distance and in doubt
And as a result, Herod remained troubled. He was, if you will, haunted by Jesus, but NOT humbled by Him, in faith!!
Friend, don’t let your story end like Herod’s.
He heard the truth. He was stirred. He was haunted by guilt. But he refused to bow. He remained perplexed, troubled, and unmoved. He stands as a solemn warning: you can be close to the kingdom — and still be lost. You can hear the truth of Jesus, even feel the weight of conviction — and yet never come to saving faith.
But that doesn’t have to be your story.
Today, the risen Christ calls you — NOT to curiosity, but to commitment, NOT to speculation, but to surrender. NOT to merely examineJesus, but to entrust yourself fully to Him, in FAITH!
This is the call of the gospel: repent and believe.
Repentance means we stop running our own way. We turn from our sin — NOT just outward behaviors, but the inward rebellion of a heart like HEROD that says, “I’ll be king.” And instead in repentance, we turn to Christ — NOT as an advisor, not as a suggester, but as Lord and Savior and Treasure.
Faith means we trust — NOT in our own goodness, NOT in religious effort, NOT in “trying harder” — but in Jesus alone. We believe that His perfect life was lived in our place. That His death on the cross was a substitute for oursin. That He rose again to give us new life, forgiveness, and the hope of eternity.
Faith says, "Jesus, You are my only hope."And I trust, NOT because I see Him, but because I haven’t seen Him, yet still believe in HIM!! - And rejoice with Joy inexpressible and filled with glory (1 Peter 1:8) TRUST in HIS PROMISE!!
This is the miracle of the new birth, the regenerating work of God!! — and it can be yours today.
You don’t have to live with a guilty, restless, perplexed conscience. You don’t have to stay haunted by the truth. You can be healed, forgiven, made new — by the grace of God.
So I urge you:
Don’t delay. Don’t harden your heart.
Don’t walk away convicted but unchanged.
Come to Christ.
Fall at His feet in repentance. Trust in His finished work.
Lay down your pride, your guilt, your fear — and receive mercy through the finished work of Jesus!.
The arms of Jesus are open wide— NOT for the proud, NOT for the curious, but for the repentant and those willing to look to Him in faith! And He promises:
“Whoever comes to Me, I will never cast out.” (John 6:37)
So come.
Come and be forgiven.
Come and be free.
Come and be saved.
Come to Christ — and live by faith in the only Son of God who loved us, and gave His life to save us, to reconcile us to God!
And for us, who have trusted Christ, may we give ourselves to the mission of Christ in the world to preach the gospel. Trust in Christ to finish His workin the world! To trust God completely and live in faith.Jesus will continue to divide the audience. He will save according to His sovereign will. But we GO! As those called, empowered, and sent to labor in the proclamation of Christ’s gospel to the ends of the earth.
Sermon Summary: Jesus sends His disciples to preach with power, trust God, and live by faith!
