New Series: The Four “Ships” of the Church:
Fellowship, Worship, Discipleship and Stewardship
RBC is 60 years old because she has been making disciples and if she’s going to still going to be around 60 years from now it will be because she kept making disciples.
Matthew 28:18–20 NASB
18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Did you know that nowhere in the Bible is anyone ever commanded to or invited to become a Christian? Its just not there.
God doesn’t seek converts to Christianity. The Holy spirit never draws a convert. The Holy Spirit draws people to become fully devoted followers of Christ.
The Lord Jesus desires disciples.

What is a disciple?

A disciple is a born again believer in Jesus Christ (“…baptizing...”) that has a loving relationship with Jesus (“…I am with you always…”) , faithfully follows Jesus (“...go therefore and make disciples…”) and teaches others to do the same (“…teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you...”).
And if we love our neighbors, that means other people, all of them, then we will want them to know the love of Jesus so we will make disciples.

Discipleship is Commanded.

Matthew 28:18 NASB
18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth…
Jesus was commanded by the Father to make disciples!
John 17:4 NASB
4 “I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do.
John 4:34 NASB
34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work.
John 6:38 NASB
38 “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
John 12:49 NASB
49 “For I did not speak on My own initiative, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak.
John 14:31 NASB
31 … I do exactly as the Father commanded Me…
Philippians 2:8 NASB
8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Jesus commands us to make disciples:
Matthew 4:19 NASB
19 And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

Discipleship is Continual.

Matthew 28:20 NASB
20 …and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Luke 9:23 NASB
23 And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.
Matthew 28:19 NASB
19 “Go therefore and make disciples…
In the Greek, the command is not “go”, it is “make disciples”. The “go” is actually a present participle and would be better translated “going” or “as you go”.
Why does this matter?
Because it impacts how we see discipleship!
Go make disciples sounds like it is something we go and do. It would imply there are times are are not going and doing discipleship.
As you go, make disciples, implies that you are to be making disciples as you are doing other things. It means we should be intentionally looking for ways to make disciples anywhere and everywhere, all the time. It is our mission and everything else God gives us to do is either a means by which we are to make disciples or an opportunity to make disciples.
1 Peter 3:15 NASB
15 …always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you…

Discipleship is Comprehensive.

Matthew 28:19–20 NASB
19 “…make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you…

Everything - Seeking God’s Kingdom First

Matthew 28:18 NASB
18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
Matthew 6:33 NASB
33 “…seek first His kingdom and His righteousness…
Luke 14:26–27 NASB
26 “If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. 27 “Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.
Disciples of Christ seek to put Jesus first before all other relationships in their lives.
Disciples of Christ vacate the throne of their heart and place the Lord Jesus there.

Evangelism - Salvation

Matthew 28:19–20 NASB
19 “…baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit…”
Romans 10:9–10 NASB
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
Ephesians 2:8–10 NASB
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

Edification - Sanctification

Matthew 28:19–20 NASB
20 …teaching them to observe all that I commanded you…
Mark 12:30 NASB
30 and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’

Example - Show the truth

(v. 19b-20a) “...baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you...”
1 Corinthians 11:1 (NIV)
11 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.

Explanation - Share the truth

(v. 19b-20a) “... baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you...”
2 Timothy 3:16–17 NASB
16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

Everyone - Seek the lost everywhere

Matthew 28:19–20 NASB
19 “…make disciples of all the nations…
Mark 16:15 NASB
15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.

Discipleship is Co-Laboring.

Discipleship is hard work, but you don’t have to do it alone.
(in fact, you cannot do it alone.)
Matthew 28:20 NASB
20 …am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
1 Corinthians 3:6–9 NASB
9 For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building.
2 Corinthians 6:1 NASB
1 …working together with Him, we also urge you not to receive the grace of God in vain…
1 Corinthians 6:19 NASB
19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?
Philippians 2:13 NASB
13 for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.
Ephesians 4:15–16 NASB
15 but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.
Luke 10:1 NASB
1 Now after this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come.
Church family, let’s be disciples, that make disciples, who make disciples.
Let’s pray.
