Introduction
“You, however”...compared to false teachers.
Never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.
Oppose the truth.
“You, however”...compared to evil men and imposters.
They will go from bad to worse
They will deceive people and be deceived themselves.
As the heretics and their followers continue to get progressively worse, and spiral downward, Timothy must progress in the opposite direction.

You, However, Continue...(vs 14)

Imperative - you must keep doing this.
Perseverance and commitment to.

The Foundation of Scripture (vs 14-15)

Continue In The Things You Have Learned
Meno - remain, abide, dwell.
John 15:4 NASB95
“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me.
John 15:7 NASB95
“If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
Why can we ask whatever we wish and it’s done for us?
James 4:3 NASB95
You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.
When we have Jesus’ words living within us we have the guardrails up to avoid going in the gutter in our requests.
Joshua 1:8 NASB95
“This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.
God’s word gives us the guide to do what’s right which pleases Him and allows Him to pour His blessing and favor upon us.
Romans 12:2 NASB95
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
When our mind is renewed by God’s Word, it helps us understand God’s will in ALL things and helps us see that God’s will is good and perfect.
Psalm 119:105 NASB95
Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.
Menthano - To learn, to understand
To dwell in and remain faithful and steadfast in the things you have learned...
It’s digested information.
more than just head knowledge.Football - being a good player is knowing more than just the plays in the playbook.
It’s knowing the nuances, knowing how your responsibilities affect the others.
It’s knowing it so well that option routes become second nature.
You’re enmeshed in the system as if you were the one who created it.
It carries the idea of “increasing one’s knowledge by study, observation, and asking questions.”
Players watch film all the time to correct errors and see where they can improve.
Players ask their coaches good questions to find an edge.
We must do the same with the Bible.
It’s one reason why I like the inductive study method.
Question the text.
5 W’s and the H.
What are repeated words or phrases?
What terms of transition or comparisons are there?
What lists are given?
What figures of speech and idioms are used?
Understanding the moral implications and appropriate actions to follow.
There is a relational intimacy where you are always mulling over and meditating upon the word of God.
Joshua 1:8 - to meditate - to mutter, growl, speak.
This abiding, dwelling, meditating upon will transform your mind by the power of the Holy Spirit and allow you to know how you are supposed to live your life and respond to any and every situation of life.
Continue In The Things You Have Become Convinced Of
The things that came to influence you to believe.
Don’t forget what led you to be convinced that Jesus is the Christ.
This carries the idea of standing fast upon as a foundation.
Scripture must be foundational to our lives.
We all make sure we get food each day. Why not spiritual food?
It’s not a time issue, it’s a priority issue.
Don’t forget from whom you have learned them.
The source is important.
Paul - referenced in verse 10 - followed teachings of Paul.
But also his mother and grandmother
2 Timothy 1:5 NASB95
For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well.
That from childhood you have known
The beginning is important.
The importance of teaching our kids from when they are little.
Parent’s making sure your kids are in church.
But what was the ultimate source? From whom did Timothy learn?
From childhood you have known...The Sacred Writing.
This is why I love Sunday School, AWANA, and youth group.

The Primacy Of Scripture (vs 15)

Sacred
Sacred writings - used to refer to the OT
Sacred - used to emphasize the position of an item or person.
Elevation of Scripture to a position of honor and reverence because if its relation to God.
It wasn’t long ago I made a comment to someone that one struggle we have in the church is the reducing of the regard and reverence for the Word of God.
People were not seeing it as the HOLY Bible anymore. It is just the Bible.
The next step is to say it contains truths about God, but it is not from God, nor is the entire Bible accurate and trustworthy.
It gets reduced to good stories written on ink and paper that just talk about God, and it’s power is negated.
Wisdom
The Book of Proverbs wisdom is personified as a female.
Proverbs 2:4–6 NASB95
If you seek her as silver And search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will discern the fear of the Lord And discover the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
Wisdom - sophizo - to make one wise, skillful, expert. to make wise, enlighten in regard to divine things.
1 Corinthians 2:6–7 NASB95
Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away; but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our glory;
1 Corinthians 2:12–13 NASB95
Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God, which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.
Is able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation.
Power
Romans 1:16 NASB95
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
The power of the word of God in the Gospel
Power of God for salvation - the role of the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 2:3–5 NASB95
I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling, and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.
Faith
Salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
Romans 10:17 NASB95
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
Christ’s sacrifice is sufficient for everyone’s sin, but it is only effective for those who put their faith in it.

The Inspiration of Scripture (vs 16)

Inspiration - literally, God breathed
God spoke and it was - Genesis
Psalm 33:6 NASB95
By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, And by the breath of His mouth all their host.
inherent power in the word.
supernatural
Being driven or carried by the Holy Spirit
influenced, guided by
but not dictated
2 Peter 1:20–21 NASB95
But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
Here’s the miracle - God used people’s personalities, writing styles, experiences, calling and station in life to get written down what He wanted written down.
All - not some.
It doesn’t just contain God’s truth. It is God’s truth.
And through the power of the Holy Spirit we are able to understand it.
The Holy Spirit and the Word go hand in hand.
John 16:13 NASB95
“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.

The Profitability of Scripture (vs 16)

Primary purpose of Scripture is wisdom for salvation through the Gospel.
But that is not the only purpose.
Which is the point of the next verses.
Profitable - helpful, useful, advantageous, beneficial. ALL of it is in some way.
Romans 15:4 NASB95
For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
Teaching -
That which belongs to the teacher.
In this context, it reinforces the inspiration by God.
The things contained in Scripture are those things which belong to and come from God.
God is, then, passing them on to us through people.
It is the instruction manual from the manufacturer of the newly created product.
Instruction, authoritative teaching.
Factual and objective.
This is the truth.
Setting the standard.
Reproof
To be convinced of error.
To show where one has strayed from the truth in understanding or motives or behavior.
Conviction of Scripture.
Hebrews 4:12 NASB95
For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Correction
To set right again, a course correction.
This is how to get back to the standard.
to be back in a correct moral posture.
Leading us back to the paths of righteousness
Training - paideuo
This is how to keep the standard.
disciplining oneself to be more in tune with the standard.
chasing edges - Mike Macdonald
staying sharp
Instruction by word and example.
educative discipline.
In righteousness
For that which is right by God’s definition.
To Be Adequately Equipped
Equipped (exartizo)
to furnish or outfit completely.
You will have what you need.
He will equip you for the assigned task.
to put a thing in its appropriate condition, to mend.
To repair that which is broken such as the nets.
He will fix what the world and the devil have broken so you will be able to function.
Metaphorically, of a person in error, to restore and set right.
rightly dividing the word of truth...cutting straight.
He will set the compass to true north and program in the coordinates.
Adequate - (artios)
competent, proficient, adept, or capable.
He will train you to use what He gives You.
And He does that through the Scriptures.
For Every Good Work
What God calls us to do, He equips us for.
God’s word is that which gives one the necessary skills and tools to be capable in performing every good work.
It speaks of gifted, functioning maturity which is brought by the Spirit through the Scripture.

The Foundation
The Primacy
The Inspiration
The Profitability
To Continue In The Things You Have Learned.
Think if it as perseverance in the study of the Word.
Carving out and protecting time to read and study the Word.
We all are really good at carving out and protecting time for our hobbies.
Hunting, fishing, boating, sports.
But why does God’s Word not get the same attention?
Think of it as building upon what’s already been established.
growth
sanctification
This is remaining committed to and standing fast upon its precepts.
Continue In The Things You Have Become Convinced Of
The very words of God breathed onto pages giving us the truth about all things.
The very words of God’s Gospel bringing power to save us.
The very words of God providing us with everything we need for life and godliness.
The very words of God showing us the standard, convicting us when we stray, bringing us back in line, and showing us how to stay true.
The very words of God equipping us with what we need to minister to and bless others with every good work.
The very words of God giving us hope through His promises that He will faithfully fulfill.
