Series: A Disciple-Making Mindset Pt. 2 - Making Disciples

Matthew 28:19; Mark 5:1-20

Thesis: As we are going with the desire, intention, and prayer to make disciples, God puts people in our path to share the Gospel with that they may become His disciples.

Introduction

Ask yourself the question, “Who has God put in my path?”
[Tristan from the gym… Jesse…]
Background:
The Bible Knowledge Commentary E. Jesus’ Miracles Demonstrating His Sovereign Power (4:35–3:43)

Mark’s selection of parables is followed by a series of miracles, indicating that what Jesus did (His works) authenticated what He said (His words)… This section contains four miracles that clearly show Jesus’ sovereign authority over various hostile powers: a storm at sea (4:35–41); demon possession (5:1–20); incurable physical illness (5:25–34); and death (5:21–24, 35–43).

There are more miracles (healing the leper, the centurion’s daughter, various healings, etc.) recorded in Matthew
Jesus provides us with an example from His own life and ministry of encountering someone as He’s going
Three characteristics of Jesus’ role in this story and how they relate and give us examples of what we are to do…

Jesus Sees The Man (v. 1-9)

Jesus encounters the demon-possessed man
Not physically bound, but spiritually bound
Claustrophobic (roller coasters)
“Constantly…”
Real pain, some self-caused and self-inflicted
Application:
We were once like the man…
We are now the ones, like Jesus, who go to the man…

Jesus Saves The Man (v. 10-17)

Jesus sets the man free from the demons, exercising complete authority over the demons
Jesus carries the authority to save…
The people saw the man
“sitting down,” “clothed,” “in his right mind” - he was sane, rational, self-controlled; something had deeply changed within him (BNK, 123)
They were frightened
Application:
We were once in need of the same freedom…
We are now the ones who share how they can be free…

Jesus Sends The Man (v. 18-20)

Now the man goes home to proclaim the great things God had done for Him…
Jesus sends him back to those who told Jesus to leave…
Application:
Like this man, we cannot wait to be with Jesus…
Like this man, Jesus has sent us to

Conclusion

This is the same process today…
We See People
We Share The Gospel With People
We Send People To Continue Going In The Name Of Jesus
The first step in making disciples is going, and as we go we share the Gospel with those around us… “Going as you go” share the Gospel
