Introduction
Attention:
Q. Have you ever felt like you aged out of something?
Trick or Treat
Youth at the playground
People treat godliness this way
Today: Titus 2:2-10; the timelessness of godliness
Need:
The world of the temporary
No hope
Not possible
Godliness is possible
Godliness gives us hope
Body
The Big Idea:
Godliness is timeless.
Review from last time:
Titus 2:1 ESV
1 But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine.
Sound doctrine is teachable
Sound doctrine is livable
The Big Question:
How is godliness timeless?
Age equips disciples
Titus 2:2–3 ESV
2 Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. 3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good,
Explanation:
“Older men”
The world’s perception
Set in their ways
“You can’t teach an old dog new tricks “
God’s vision
Old men can be teachable
Old men can use their wisdom for good
“Sober-minded”
Or “level-headed”
Wise decision making/careful judgements
Learned over time!
“Dignified”
“Worthy of respect”
Respect is earned
Taking advantage of opportunities over the years
“Self-controlled”
The key to godliness
Or “sensible”
The learned secret of saying “no”
“Sound in faith”
A healthy confidence in God
Knowing what you believe, why you believe it, and in whom you believe
“In love”
Have people come to know that you are his disciple? (John 13:35)
“and in steadfastness”
Or “patience”/”endurance”
Running the race for a long time
“Older women”
Again: God’s vision
“Reverent in behavior”
“Temple-fitting”
Holy living
“Not slanderers”
Being truthful
Root word: Diabolos
Not being devilish in your speech
“Or slaves to much wine.”
Don’t get drunk
Being level-headed
Learning to say “no”
“Teach what is good”
Be a teacher!
Share your experience
The bottom line:
Age is the best teacher
Age brings wisdom
Unique godliness
Illustration:
A marathon
Beginners start strong but fade by mile 10
Veterans pace themselves
When the young look at them...
Older saints showing the younger saints how to run the long race of faith
Application:
Do you view age as a burden or as an asset?
How can you pour into those who are younger than you?
Fall Festival
Commit to pursue godliness for the rest of your life!
Transition Statement:
Let’s not make the mistake of assuming that godliness is reserved for those who are older.
The Big Idea:
Godliness is timeless.
The Big Question:
How is godliness timeless?
Age equips disciples
The young are teachable
Titus 2:4–8 ESV
4 and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, 5 to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. 6 Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. 7 Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, 8 and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us.
Explanation:
“train the young women to love their husbands and children”
A woman’s first commitment
Their number 1 ministry
Moving beyond innate affection
“Her greatest joy and most awesome heritage is godly children devoted to Jesus and His plan and purpose for their lives.”
“To be self-controlled”
A virtue not bound to age or gender!
Exercising common sense and good judgement
“Pure”
Above reproach
a “one man kind of woman”
“Working at home”
Be a home maker!
Two sides:
You can do this and have a job
But women that choose to just focus on this should not be shamed!
“Kind”
Or “be good”
Treat people well
Treating others the way we would want to be treated
Treating others like Jesus would
“Submissive to their own husbands”
Yielding in one’s will to the leadership of another
Does not mean inferior
Jesus submits to the Father!
A challenge to husbands: Be someone worth submitting to!
“that the word of God may not be reviled.”
It all comes back to God’s word
His word is the key to godliness
“Likewise, urge younger men to be self controlled”
Here it is!
Be a level-headed dude
Guard the heart (Proverbs 4:23)
“Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works”
Be a good example
Always a good challenge to the youth!
Model = mold
Live a life that others can mold their lives after
“and in your teaching show integrity, dignity”
Integrity: What you would do if no one else is around
In your teaching, show your character
“and sound speech that cannot be condemned”
Words are dangerous! (James)
Taming the tongue is possible at a young age
“so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us”
Striving for blameworthiness
Being an example to everyone
Illustration:
Learning guitar
Fingers remember shapes and develop callouses
What felt impossible becomes natural
This is what godliness is like
Application:
Do you feel like you are too young to be truly used by God?
What is it that is keeping you from being who God created you to be?
Have a teachable spirit
Transition Statement:
There is not a single scenario-age or otherwise-that disables you from godliness.
The Big Idea:
Godliness is timeless.
The Big Question:
How is godliness timeless?
Age equips disciples
The young are teachable
Doctrine is always livable
Titus 2:9–10 ESV
9 Bondservants are to be submissive to their own masters in everything; they are to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, 10 not pilfering, but showing all good faith, so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior.
Explanation:
“Bondservants”
Voluntary submission
Closer to modern day employment that modern day slavery
“.… Are to be submissive to their own masters in everything”
This is counter-cultural
Yet it points to the Gospel
“They are to be well-pleasing, not argumentative”
Being someone who “pleases” their employer
Being a hard worker
Getting things done
“Not argumentative”
Don’t complain
Don’t fight against authority =
“Not pilfering”
Don’t steal!
“Showing good faith”
Faith in God = giving others the benefit of the doubt
“so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior”
It starts and ends with doctrine
Teaching doctrine > living doctrine > others adorning doctrine
Teaching doctrine without living doctrine is pointless =
Good doctrine must be lived out
Being “doers of the word” (James 1:22)
The bottom line:
Doctrine can be lived out in any situation
Illustration:
Brother Lawrence was a 17th-century monk who worked in the kitchen, washing dishes every day.
He said, “The time of business does not with me differ from the time of prayer; I possess God as tranquilly in the noise of my kitchen as if I were upon my knees.”
That’s the heart of Titus 2:9–10.
No matter where you work, how unseen you feel, or who your “master” is—godliness is still possible there.
Doctrine isn’t just for Sunday; it’s for the sink, the office, the classroom, the field
Application:
Do you live doctrine out?
If saved, then “yes!”
But how much?
What excuses do you use for not living out God’s word?
Doctrine is always livable
Strive to live it out in every circumstance
Conclusion
Visualization
Picture yourself at the end of your life, entering into eternity
Did your life embody the timelessness of godliness?
Reiteration
Godliness is timeless
We know this because age equips disciples, the young are teachable, and doctrine is always livable
How is it that God is calling you to respond?
Behavior/heart change
Church membership
Fall Festival
Don’t wait for godliness.
Embrace it today.
