We are going to talk about the Lord’s Supper Today!

Story: Growing up… I always loved watching and then finally participating in The Lords Supper.… Parents you should talk to Your kids about it!

Its good for us to know what The Lord’s Supper is and Why we do it.

What is the Lord’s Supper?

The Baptist Faith & Message 2000 answers this: “The Lord’s Supper is a symbolic act of obedience whereby members of the church, through partaking of the bread and the fruit of the vine, memorialize the death of the Redeemer and anticipate His second coming.”

We are coming together as believers to celebrate what Christ has done on our behalf

We are also anticipating his return

Side Note: We believe that Baptism is a prerequisite to the Lord’s Supper.

Background of The Lord’s Supper:

Old Testament: Exodus 12:1-14

The Ground work for The Lord’s Supper was laid when they celebrated Passover

The people where to take the unblemished yearling (1 year or in 2 year) male lamb and slaying it at twilight.

They would take the blood and apply it above the door and to the two door posts.

They would then roast the lamb with bitter herbs and eat quickly with the family....They would be dressed and ready for the EXOUDUS

If the house hold that did this obeyed they were spared.

Question: Do you see something unique in the passages? Jesus is the once and for all lamb!

The people where to remember and celebrate what God did

What Can We Take From This?

Remembering what God has done is important

We forget so easily! (Ex: We need reminders for everything)

New Testament:

When you come to the New Testament Passover had morphed into a ceremony that included partaking of four cups of wine.

People would reenact what happened at Passover

When Jesus took the Bread and The Cup he assured in a new convenient and it carried with it ultimate redemptive significance.

What does the Bread & Wine Signify?

The Bread:

The Bread Represents Jesus body that was given

Jesus is the Bread of Life...We will find our satisfaction in Him

Side Note: Jesus Body was never broken (John 19:36)(Psalm 34:20)

The Cup:

The Cup represents Jesus blood that was shed for us

Jesus’s Blood initiated the New Covenant

Jeremiah 31:34 “And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

Jesus brought everything into motion when he ushered in the new covenant

We need to understand that in this movement of Jesus passing the cup & Bread...This is where it was instituted

This is where the Lord’s Supper was Instituted....

Some things to understand about the Lord’s Supper.....

The Lord’s Supper is a time of Remembrance

Read: Luke 22:19-20

Its a time of remembrance and deep reflection of what Christ has done for us

ILL: You ever get put in time out when you were a kid? You had to sit there and think of what you had done.

Think about what Christ did for you on Calvary

Jesus became sin for us

2 Corinthians 5:21 “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

Jesus Was the ultimate sacrifice

Application: We must never forget what Christ did for us on the cross

2. The Lord’s Supper is a time of Community

We are coming together to partake in the Lords Supper

We are sharing and celebrating the Lords Work

Community is important

The Other Points about The Lords supper are found in I Cor 11:17-33

People in Paul’s Day where taking communion in a unworthy manner

3. The Lord’s Supper is a time of Examination

We want to take it in a worthy manner

Read: I Cor. 11:27-32

We should confess sin if where have not confessed it

4. The Lords Supper is a time of Celebration & Anticipation

We are to proclaim what Jesus has done for us

We should look forward to his return

EX: What a day that will be, when my Jesus I shall see!

Bottom Line: The Lords Supper must be a time of Remembrance, Community, Examination, and Anticipation of what Christ has done and what Christ will do.

We must remember the importance & Significance of the Lord’s Supper
