347. The Death of Jesus
it was noon - Matt, Mark, Luke
Darkness fell - Matt, Mark, Luke
Jesus called out with a loud voice “Eloi Eloi, lamea sabachthani?” Matt, Mark
Bystanders mistook his words as him calling for Elijah - Matt, Mark
Jesus says “I am thirsty” - John
sponge with sour wine prepared for Jesus - Matt, Mark, John
Matt and Mark record someone saying “Wait…let’s see whether Elijah comes to save him.”
John records it was help up to his lips.
Jesus finals words
Matthew records “Jesus shouted out again and he released his Spirit”
Mark records “Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last”
Luke records “Jesus shouted, father I entrust m spirit into your hands and with those words he breathed his last
John records “When Jesus had tasted it he said, It is finished!” then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
The curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn, Matt and Mark say “torn in two from top to bottom, Luke says “ torn down the middle”
Matt records the earth shook and rock split apart and that bodies of many godly men and women who had died were raised from the dead.
After Jesus’ resurrection they left the cemetery went into Jerusalem and appeared to many people.
Roman officer
Matt - Roman officer and other soldiers were terrified by the earthquake and what had happened and said truly this was the Son of God!”
Mark - Roman officer who stood facing him saw how he died and exclaimed “This man truly was the Son of God!”
Luke - Officer overseeing the execution was what had happened and worshiped God and said, “Surely this man was innocent
Luke also records that many who witnessed the execution when home in deep sorrow
348. Witnesses of the Crucifixion
Matt:
Many women who had come from Galilee to care for him were watching from a distance including: Mary Magdalene, Mary (Mother of James and Joseph), mother of James and John.
Mark:
Records the same as Matt except Mark calls James and John’s mother by name, Salome.
Luke:
Names none by name but says Jesus’ friends including women and that they followed him from Galilee and stood at a distance.
John:
Jesus’ mother and his mothers sister, Mary (the wife of Clopas), Mary Magdalene, the disciple whom Jesus loved.
This is where Jesus gives his mother to be cared for by John.
349. Jesus’ Side Pierced
Only John records this event.
350. The Burial of Jesus
All four gospels identify Joseph of Arimathea was the one who asked Pilot for Jesus’ body, was given permission so he took Jesus’ body and put it in a tomb.
Who was Joseph
Matt - became a follower of Jesus
Mark - “was an honored member of the high council and was waiting for the Kingdom of God to come.
Luke - good and righteous, member of the jewish high council and did not agree with their decision and actions of other religious leaders, also said he was waiting for the kingdom of God.
John - a secret disciple of Jesus
John records Nicodemus was with Joseph
All four Gospels say Jesus’ body was wrapped in long linen cloth
(Mark records later that spices were purchased by the women to anoint Jesus’ body).
Luke says they went home to prepare spices and ointments to anoint his body but couldn’t finish because of the Sabbath
John says they wrapped his body with the spices in long sheets of linen cloth.
Tomb
Matt - “his own new tomb”
Mark - “a tomb that had never been used”
Luke - “New tomb”
John - “new tomb that had never been used before”
Matthew and Mark identify two Mary’s followed and saw where they laid the body and Luke says women from Galilee. John does not record women witnesses.
351. The Guard at the Tomb
Only Matthew records this event.

The Resurrection

352. The Women at the Tomb
All say Early on Sunday Morning
Matthew - Mary Magdalene and the other Mary
Mark - Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Salome
Luke - Women (Mary M. Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and several other women.
John - Mary Magdalene
Stone Rolled away
Matt - earthquake and angel from heaven removed the stone and sat on it, the guards fainted
Mark - women asked each other on the way to tomb who will roll the stone away, when they got there it was already moved
Luke - with their spices they arrived and stone had already been moved
John - Mary M, arrived and the stone was already moved
In the synoptics we see an interchange between the women and the angel and they all pretty much the same thing.
John records an interaction between Mary and two white robed angels after Peter and John leave the empty tomb.
Matthew records the women leaving and being frightened and filled with great joy and they rushed to give the news to the disciples
Mark records the women trembling and bewildered and they said nothing to anyone.
Luke records the women going back and telling the disciples who thought it was nonsense but Peter got up and ran to the tomb peaked inside and then went home again.
353. Jesus Appears to the Women
Matthew records Jesus appearing the the woman and telling them to tell the disciples to go to Galilee to see him there.
Mark records Jesus appearing to Mary M. and when she went to the grieving disciples, they didn’t believe her.
Luke records the women went to the apostles and told them what had happened but they did not believe it. Jesus’ first appearance was not to the women.
John records Jesus appears to Mary M. and an extended conversation which included his ascension.
354. The Report of the Guard
This report is only recorded in Matthew
355. Jesus Appears to Two on the Way to Emmaus
Mark mentions Jesus appearance to two of his followers walking from Jerusalem into the country.
Luke records an extended conversation.
356. Jesus Appears to the Disciples
It is important to note that Mark says 11 disciples, Judas I is dead so Thomas is with them, and they were rebuked for their unbelief.
Luke and John record an extended interaction between Jesus and his apostles
357. Jesus Appears to the Disciples with Thomas
Only John records the event That we use to call him doubting Thomas
358. Jesus Appears to His Disciples - Table/Mountain
Jesus’ commission to the disciples seem to have happened in two different locations but could not the table be on the mountain?
The differences in the two accounts is not irreconcilable.
What they have in common is that they are to go into all the world/nations Matthew says to make disciples and Mark says to preach the Good news.
Matthew describes how to baptize where as Mark shares the importance of it.
Matthew describes their job is to teach these new disciples where as Luke show what happens when they believe.
Matthew records that Jesus says he would be with them
Luke the supernatural powers that will accompany them that believe
cast out demons in his name
speak in new tounges
handle snakes with safety
drink poison and not get hurt
lay hands of sick and they will be healed

The Ending of the Gospels

359. Mark’s Ending
There are two different endings to Mark, one ends with vs 8 the other includes vs 9-20
Mark’s final verse records Jesus’ ascension
360. Matthew’s Ending
Mathew ends with the great commission.
361. Luke’s Ending
Luke final encounter with Jesus and his disciples.
It ends with the promise of the Holy Spirit, Jesus being taken up into heaven, and them spending time in the Temple and praising God.
362. John’s Ending
John seems to end his book with these words…
363. John’s Ending - Sea of Tiberias
There is an appendix at the end of John’s Gospel the includes the miracle catch of fish
364. John’s ending - Peter’s Reinstatement
After the miracle catch of fish, Jesus reinstates Peter.
