Have you ever hesitated to share something important because you worried people might think it was foolish? When something truly matters to us, we're willing to risk looking silly to share it with others. The apostle Paul felt this way about the gospel. In Romans 1:16-17, he declares with bold confidence that he refuses to be ashamed of the good news about Jesus Christ.
The Gospel Is Power, Not Philosophy
Paul writes, "I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation" (Romans 1:16). The gospel is not merely human wisdom about how to live well or a philosophy about how things work. It is divine power—a message straight from God himself.
Consider the raw power of an F-15 jet taking off from Kadena Air Base. The noise overwhelms you. Even inside your car, it feels like an earthquake. That display of mechanical force is impressive, yet it pales in comparison to the power contained in the gospel message. The gospel has the supernatural ability to completely transform every aspect of a person's life, delivering them from sin—past, present, and future.
Salvation for Everyone Who Believes
Who can receive this powerful salvation? Paul answers clearly: "to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek" (Romans 1:16). God chose the Jewish people as his special nation in the Old Testament, revealing himself to them and giving them the Scriptures. They received the first invitation to enter the salvation God prepared. But this good news extends beyond Israel to every person on earth. Anyone who believes that Jesus died on the cross for their sins and rose from the dead can receive complete salvation.
The word "believe" connects directly to "faith"—belief is the verb form, faith is the noun. Biblical faith means active trust displayed through obedience. Romans 10:13 promises, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
God's Righteousness Revealed Through Faith
Paul continues: "For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith. As it is written, 'The righteous shall live by faith'" (Romans 1:17). This phrase "the righteousness of God" carries two important meanings. First, it refers to God's own righteous character—his holiness, his just dealing with sin, and his pouring out of wrath on Jesus in our place. Second, it refers to the righteousness God gives to those who believe in him. When Jesus took our punishment on the cross, he clothed us in his own righteousness, washing our sins away completely.
Notice that this righteousness is revealed "from faith for faith." God's righteousness appears in the world and in our lives through faith from beginning to end. There is no formula where we start with faith and then reveal God's goodness through our own works. The entire process operates through faith. God does the work; we are called to believe.
Living by Faith, Not Performance
Many believers struggle with doubts about their salvation. When life goes well and God feels close, they feel confident. But when they stumble into sin or experience God's apparent silence, they wonder if they're truly saved. This uncertainty misses the point. The good news about Jesus does not change based on our feelings or performance. The truth remains steady even when our emotions fluctuate.
Martin Luther understood this principle. When people expressed doubt about their salvation, he would ask them a simple question: "Right now, are you trusting that Jesus has forgiven you of your sins?" If they answered yes, he would respond, "Well, I don't see why you're so worried about your salvation." Salvation belongs to all who believe, not to all who perform perfectly.
Imagine trying to run a marathon without proper training or physical conditioning. No amount of research, visualization, or determination could overcome the body's limitations. Within thirty minutes, exhaustion would set in. Similarly, attempting to reach God through our own effort always fails. As we try harder and fail repeatedly, God's perfect ability shines brighter. He invites us to stop striving and simply trust him, because he has already accomplished everything necessary for our salvation.
The Gospel Changes Everything
The gospel is guaranteed to change your life in a powerful way—not by giving you a list of requirements to fulfill, but by leading you to trust God completely. He does the work. The righteous live by faith, not by works or human wisdom. We receive the Lord's righteousness by faith, and we walk in his righteousness by faith, day after day.
This transformation begins with a simple prayer: "Lord, I believe that you died for me, that you rose from the dead, and I receive your forgiveness." But it continues throughout your entire life as you come to know Jesus more deeply each day, experiencing his salvation more fully, watching him open unexpected doors to share about him with others, and feeling his peace even when circumstances feel chaotic.
The good news is truly good. Rather than second-guessing God's power or questioning whether his promises apply to you, focus on trusting him day after day. As you turn away from doubts, anxieties, and worries to trust the Lord, he will continue to do amazing things in your life.
