“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;
that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
“After a little while the world will no longer see Me, but you will see Me; because I live, you will live also.
“In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.
“He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him.”
Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, what then has happened that You are going to disclose Yourself to us and not to the world?”
Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him.
“He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.
“These things I have spoken to you while abiding with you.
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.
“You heard that I said to you, ‘I go away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced because I go to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.
“Now I have told you before it happens, so that when it happens, you may believe.
“I will not speak much more with you, for the ruler of the world is coming, and he has nothing in Me;
but so that the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as the Father commanded Me. Get up, let us go from here.
“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;
that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
“But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.
“And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;
concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me;
and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me;
and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
“I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
“He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.
“All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.
Five truths about the Holy Spirit
16 I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, butyou know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
In these two verses…we see that Jesus reveals five truths about the Spirit of God:
His Role: The HELPER
V16. The Helper teaches us in all things
Who in here needs help?
Work, marriage, personal relationships, wisdom, knowledge. McDonald’s needed help this morning.
We have a heavenly expert to call upon when we need assistance and his name is The HOLY SPIRIT OF GOD.
2. His Reign: with us FOREVER
Do you remember how long forever is? (The birds wing and the steel orb) A long time!
This helper will never leave you! And that means his Peace will never leave with you.
John 14:27
“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.
THIS PEACE IS FOREVER
3. His Reputation: Spirit of Truth
We live in a world of lies.
The Devil is the father of lies.
This time last year we were about to elect a president. Remember the election ads start flooding your tv…
They are all full of lies and political spin. I don’t trust it.
Do you know how to tell when a politician is lying…their lips are moving!!
People will say anything to get elected. To get their way.
And now, the news media...which used to be a trusted institution is now just a bunch of political hacks spinning their own narratives. I don’t trust any of them. Fox, CNN, ABC, NBC. Every headline I will read and take with a grain of salt.
I don’t trust the news, the media, I don’t trust Facebook. But I can trust the Holy Spirit. This Spirit of Truth
That is His reputation and it is uncomplrpmised. Flawless. It is perfect.
4. His Residence: Abides in the believer.
Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him.
The Holy Spirit of God has chosen to make his home in our hearts.
He resides within. Therefore His peace resides within.
Verse 27. Do not let your heart be troubled
Because we have something that the world does not have and that something is the Spirit of God.
God is the still on the throne and the Spirit is still residing in my heart.
And along with that spirit is my Help…day in, day out, forever.
The Spirit leads me in truth
The Spirit also is received by me…yet rejected by the world. What does that mean for today? We will have to deal with people day in and day out that do not belong to the Kingdom of God, they do not share our convictions, They do not share our values. They have rejected the Kingdom of God.
And there is really nothing you can do about that. But the bible tells us that as much as it lies within us to do so..live at peace with everyone.
5. His Rebuke:
“And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;
