Matthew Chapter 1 (The Generations of Christ from Joseph)
Matthew Chapter 1 (The Generations of Christ from Joseph)
Intro
Last Sunday we wrapped up the book of Genesis. The first book of the bible. The first book of the Old Testament
Now we are starting the book of Matthew. The first book of the New Testament.
In Matthew we are going to see the beginning and overview of the life of Jesus Christ.
The book of Genesis covered the beginning and establishment of man in the flesh.
The book of Matthew is going to cover the beginning of the Messiah and also the fulfillment of Old testament prophecy and law.
Before we kick off, Who was Matthew?
Matthew was a descendant of David,
Matthew name meaning “Gift of Jehovah”
his original name was Levi,
The name Matthew was adopted after becoming an Apostle,
And Christ called him to become one of his disciples, therefore he was one of the 12 disciples of Jesus.
Matthew Chapter 1 picking up with the generations and lineage leading to Christ by law not by blood.
Lets get into it.
The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
We are starting back from the beginning here.
Back in the lineage from Genesis.
Showing us that God’s plan for our Messiah was in the works since all the way back to Abraham.
Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren;
Judas is just the Greek form of Judah.
We studied the 12 tribes of Israel back in Genesis chapter 49
We see and will read more throughout how the king line comes from the tribe of Judea.
From that inheritance or birthright from Jacob passed down to Judah.
And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;
And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon;
And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;
And Jesse we see next verse but also from studying the story of David and Goliath,
was the father of who?
David.
And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;
This is King David.
David that slew Goliath of the Palestine's
Solomon was the second born son of David.
We are going to read through to chapter 16, and remember this is the lineage through Joseph, not Mary
Bare with me with these names.
And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa;
And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias;
And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias;
And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias;
And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon:
And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel;
And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor;
And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud;
And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob;
And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
Pay attention, Jacob here is not the same Jacob or Israel we studied in Genesis.
Joseph here is not the same Joseph that became head over Egypt in Genesis.
These names can be very confusing because we see a lot of the same names but in different generations and lineages, that is why it is so important to take a step back and really pay attention to what lineage your studying.
This Joseph here is like it says. “the husband of Mary”
Christ was born of a virgin,
Joseph had nothing to do with the biological birth of Christ, The birth of Christ was strictly divine and the hand or action of God taking place.
but even though Joseph was not Christ’s biological father,
Joseph plays an important role, because he is the one that God chose to raise Christ in the flesh.
Joseph was picked for the worldly father role.
And again, even though Christ was not of the Joseph’s blood, through him being taken in and raised by Joseph, legally he has the inheritance of Joseph.
Adoption so to speak. Legally Christ is the son of Joseph, but also through divine choice from God.
We are not going there today, but the biological lineage of Christ is shown in Luke Chapter 1
The lineage through Christs biological mother Mary. The wife of Joseph here.
Joseph’s lineage here is from Judah, the King bloodline.
Mary’s lineage is from Levi, the Levitical priesthood.
Therefore, through biological standings from His mother,
and Legal inheritance by adoption from his worldly father Joseph,
Christ is King of Kings and head Priest forever.
The lineage from Joseph, and the lineage from Mary, are very important for this reason.
Showing us that God plays chess not checkers.
His plan for Christ was so thought out from the beginning that their is NO way to deny what and who he is.
We are going to see a little bit further in this chapter just how intricate God’s plan can be.
So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.
What do we see getting repeated here?
14 generation, 14 generation, 14 generations, What is this representing?
These 3 measures of 14 generations shows the complete orderly fulfillment of God’s plan
Also 14 representing salvation and deliverance because Passover was of the 14th day of the first month.
So tie them together.
God delivering us eternal salvation through His orderly plan being fulfilled.
Even breaking it up into 2 increments of 7
7 representing spiritual perfection. Showing double sense of spiritual perfection in these generations unto Christ.
It always amazes me how even the timelines and the numbers don’t lie.
No matter what aspect or angle you look at God’s plan, He sends signs, messengers, divine dreams and visions, and to take it a step further, He even has it written in the dates and numbers these things take place.
Showing how intricate God’s plan actually is.
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
Before they came together, meaning exactly that,
They did not “know” each other yet physically,
Mary became pregnant,
Just imagine, that has to be crazy to think about from Mary’s POV
but also imagine Joseph’s POV, your wife who you have not been with yet, becomes pregnant?
Even though yes this was divine action, That takes a tremendous amount of Faith and Trust from Joseph unto God to raise Christ and honor God’s plan.
Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.
Back in this time, the law punishment for adultery was the death penalty,
Joseph was a “just” man meaning he was had great morals. He knew right from wrong.
He did not want to publicly disgrace his wife, and he did not want her to be put to death, Not only because she was his wife,
But that he knew that this was divine from God,
Also he was a man in the flesh, you could imagine him having hurdles to deal with, knowing his wife was pregnant and it was not his.
Check out what happens in verse 20 here.
But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
Joseph was wondering how to handle this situation.
The angel of the Lord come to Joseph in a divine dream and told him to not worry, that this was a the Holy Spirit she was conceived with.
Joseph, being a just man, still probably had a lot of questions about this whole situation,
But notice what God does, He sends one of his angels to inform and comfort Joseph. Letting him know, “dont stress over this situation, take unto Mary as your wife just like you have intended, this is God’s seed, the will of God coming pass,”
Joseph was picked from God to raise this Child in the flesh.
He was picked for God’s plan to be able to come to pass as well.
And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
This Angel is giving Joseph further knowledge and prophecy that THIS child IS THE MESSIAH, the one who will save humanity from sin.
Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
This is Matthew referencing here old testament prophecy being fulfilled.
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign;Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son,And shall call his name Immanuel.
This is Isaiah giving a divine prophecy from God unto the house of David.
This book is 16 books before Matthew.
Matthew chapter 1:23 is this prophecy in Isaiah being fulfilled.
Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:
Joseph, obeying his instructions from God. Honoring and trusting in the Lords plan.
And we will see, Joseph and Mary committed themselves and unified as one. They did not just marry each other as a job from God. They fully took unto each other and loved each other.
This is very important to take example of.
When God gives us tasks, or works.
We shouldn’t just follow his commandments for the Image,
It is VERY important that we fully submit to God’s orders and guidance out of sincerity and commitment to Him.
We have seen it before in Genesis but we are going to see it over and over again,
Submission unto God and His plan out of sincerity not just for the image or inheritance.
And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.
This is very important to take note of here.
Joseph and Mary were commanded by God to be married, fully submissive unto God and one another,
Except for what?
They were to be Abstinent and were until after Christ was born.
It documents here that Joseph was to “know Mary not” until AFTER the birth of Jesus.
But why is this noted, She is already pregnant what does it matter at this point.
Matthew is documenting that NO HUMAN FATHER had ANY role whatsoever in the conception of Christ. And that there is no questioning it.
This was a COMPLETELY divine conception from God.
To take it a step further,
We have studied the serpent seed,
Satan planting his seed in the flesh.
The story of Cain and Abel,
Fraternal twins, same pregnancy, different conceptions.
This is ME speaking here now. My belief
I truly believe that for the biggest turning point in the bible. The biggest turning point and fulfillment for Mankind period.
Jesus Christ being born, in order for eternal salvation,
Matthew documents in the same verse as the Messiah being born in the flesh, that Joseph and Mary were abstinent from sex until AFTER Christ was born
This not only shows there was NO chance of question for the divine conception,
but also to me, furthers the proof of the serpent seed being planted between Adam and Eve back in the beginning.
We have went over the serpent seed before, but if anyone has questions and wants to go back over it we can,
But Abel was Adam’s seed, which was of the plan of God. God made Eve for Adam and were to come together as one.
We will see later in Chapter 23 of Matthew where Christ himself refers to Abel as “righteous Able”
But Cain on the other hand, who was of the wicked one, which is documented in 1st John Chapter 3 verse 12.
Satan had planted his seed in order to corrupt God’s seed or God’s plan.
I truly believe that God sent his messenger to command Joseph to abide by these orders,
and Matthew documents it that they are to be abstinent from sex until AFTER the birth of Christ
in order to fully eliminate the opportunity for Satan to corrupt the bloodline by planting a corrupt seed, the same way we saw him do back in the garden of Eden
but also to eliminate any doubt whatsoever that Christ was NOT born from man’s seed but of God’s divine conception.
Conclusion:
I know this chapter is a little more cut and dry, but we are going to see from here on the story of Christ in the flesh, and this chapter does a great job at establishing the turning point foundation for the fulfillment of Christ by tying in the Old Testament and what we have learned starting in Genesis, to what will from here until Revelations.
One of the main things I want us to take away from this chapter, is that this is NOT the biological lineage of Christ. This is his lineage by law through adoption by Joseph.
God chose Joseph to raise Christ in the flesh, He still plays an important part, but by law not blood.
There is should be NO doubt whatsoever that Christ was sent here in the flesh by God’s divine action, for the simple fact that He was born through a virgin conceiving without a seed being physically planted in the flesh.
Looking at the true science and true historical side of this only , not even looking at scripture,
Their is no doubt of this being a divine interaction from God.
Conception of a child from virgin woman, without man’s seed being planted.
