Introduction
Introduction
We have discussed over the last couple of weeks the importance of the Word of God
1. We are to Receive the Word - Believe it
Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
2. We are to Repeat the Word - Give it out
It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
This week we are going to look at another important element of the Word and that is our responsibility to remain faithful to it!
This week we are going to look at another important element of the Word and that is our responsibility to remain faithful to it!
When I say remain faithful I am not speaking of our strict obedience to it (although it is essential that we obey the Word of God), I am speaking of our absolute need to anchor our life on it!
Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.
"to whom shall we go?"
Many people go lots of places when they turn from the Word of God
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
Fables: Greek word "mythos" - or where we get our word myth.
Illustration: I hate Greek mythology- its always comes up in Jeopardy- along with Shakespeare and Classical Music!
Myths are just temporary things - But the Word of God abides forever
Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
Declaration: There is no place to go but to the Eternal Word of God!
Preposition: Have you anchored your life on the Word of God?
Transition: Let's look at three important ways we can remain faithful to the Word of God
The first way we can remain faithful to the Word is...we must treasure it!
The first way we can remain faithful to the Word is...we must treasure it!
I. We must Treasure it
I. We must Treasure it
Millions of people have literally given their lives so you can have a copy of the Word of God. We treasure our cars and houses our trophies whatever. We need to get to the place where we treasure the Word of God.
Illustration: How much I loved my first car
Psalm 119:97
O how love I thy law!
It is my meditation all the day.
Psalm 119:165
Great peace have they which love thy law:
And nothing shall offend them.
Psalm 1
Blessed is the man
That walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor standeth in the way of sinners,
Nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
But his delight is in the law of the LORD;
And in his law doth he meditate day and night.
And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water,
That bringeth forth his fruit in his season;
His leaf also shall not wither;
And whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
The ungodly are not so:
But are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous:
But the way of the ungodly shall perish.
Why don't people treasure the Word of God?
Because they don't understand what they are holding!
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
The second way we can remain faithful to the Word of God... is to test everything by it.
The second way we can remain faithful to the Word of God... is to test everything by it.
II. We must learn to Test by it
II. We must learn to Test by it

Therefore I esteem all thy precepts concerning all things to be right;
And I hate every false way.
Illustration: Judge Not Philosophy!
One of the most misquoted Bible verses in history has to be
Judge not, that ye be not judged.
But Jesus was not condemning all judgement, he was condemning hypocritical judgement! We are to judge everything by the light of God's word!
Some Warnings:
Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
Beware - be wary - be aware of
Spoil you - to rob you - to corrupt you
How are we to determine what is philosophy and vain deceit, tradition, rudiments of the world? The Word of God!
But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.
Paul said "ye might bear with him"- He was worried that they would just get lazy and put up with it!! That's pretty much sums up where we are today.
Be not ye therefore partakers with them. For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.
"proving what is acceptable unto the Lord"
A final way we can remain faithful to the Word of God is to trust it!
A final way we can remain faithful to the Word of God is to trust it!
III. We must Trust it
III. We must Trust it
We don't need more Bible Critics we need more Bible Conviction!
Hebrews 11:1
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Without faith it is impossible to please God!
Psalm 111:10
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom:
A good understanding have all they that do his commandments:
His praise endureth for ever.
Just because you don't fully understand something is no excuse to not trust it.
Illustration: I don't understand every aspect of
Commercial jet - I still get on them and fly
This goes contrary to everything that permeates the humanistic rationalistic philosophy of this world.
Conclusion
Conclusion
Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.
Don't "go away", don't deviate from the Word of God. Anchor your life on it and then decide you are not moving from it!
1. Treasure it!
2. Test by it!
3. Trust it!
