“Soma Church exists to love the body of Christ and equip them to do the work of ministry here, near and far, all for the glory of God.”
Today, we are hopping back into our study through the book of Mark and I believe the text we are in is very fitting for kicking back off.
I say this because today the text will lead each of us to answer this question introspectively… Who is Jesus?
As I was preparing to present this question for this sermon, I logged on to the interwebs to see what how people were answering the same question. and what better place to do this than Reddit?!
The particular thread I found asked this question “Atheists, what kind of man do you think Jesus was? If I asked a Christian this question, they'd obviously say "perfect! Selfless, kind, amazing and he is the all-powerful word!" But what do atheists think? What kinda man do you think Jesus was? Do you think that he genuinely believed he was God on earth or that he was just a mastermind?”
Here’s how a few people responded…
EmpathicAnarchist said, “I bet Jesus was a bad carpenter. Strange how he wasn't known for his carpentry despite being God. Nobody ever said, "that Jesus. Cool guy. Turned water to wine at my brother's wedding and makes the best tables in Nazareth."
sirhobbles said, “Its hard to know much about a man who lived so long ago whom we have so few reliable sources about. That said he was just a man, and even the best of us will be found wanting to the morals of the future.”
BTW Church, we have more reliable evidence for the existence and life of Jesus than we do Julius Caesar or the Odyssey. If you ever hear someone say that, just know they have no idea what they are talking about. but I digress…
The_Shwassassin said, “Sounds like a hippie iconoclast type - roamed around and called religious officials mean names and helped poor and suffering people. He sounds like Bernie sanders. Actually, Bernie is probably old enough to be Jesus.”
One more…
chikchip said “Coming from an agnostic, the Bible seems more like religious propaganda. I don't really think Jesus was all that he's chalked up to be. He may very well have been a good man who taught the love of others, giving to the poor, etc, but I don't think he was god or the messiah.”
“A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic - on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg - or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God; or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool; you can spit at him and kill him as a demon; or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us.”
