INTRODUCTION

—PREVIOUS MESSAGE SUMMARY—

Discipling the Nation
Discipling nations isn’t about numbers, growth charts, or clever plans—it’s about shaping a certain kind of disciple who mirrors God’s heart and willingly carries His mission wherever He leads.
It’s not just about talking about the gospel—it’s living it, breathing it, and letting people see Christ through how we love, serve, and walk in truth.
We proclaim the Kingdom not only to those within our circle but also to those far beyond our reach—because God’s heart beats for all people, not just the ones who are easy to reach.
To disciple nations is to embrace the mission Jesus came for—to seek the lost, to save the broken, and to send the found.
—Strive to Enter in the Narrow Door
The message reminds us that entering the Kingdom of God is not casual—it’s crucial. Jesus calls every disciple to strive through the narrow door with urgency, to rely on a real relationship with Him—not just familiarity—and to rejoice in God’s great reversal where the humble and faithful are welcomed into His kingdom.
Discipling the nations begins with personal obedience: Urgency in salvation. Intimacy in relationship. Joy in redemption.
—The Invitation
God has prepared a great banquet in Christ and the door is open now. The tragedy isn’t a lack of space but hearts distracted by possessions, careers, and relationships that outrank Jesus. Don’t delay or excuse yourself; receive the free grace He offers today. Then go out to the streets and the margins and compel others to come, because the Father wants a full house.
Our passage today can be found in Luke 24:44-49
Let’s open our Bibles and turn to [Luke 24:44-49].
If you are able, would you please stand in honour of the reading of God’s Word?
Call the Scripture Reader.

—SITUATION—

—BACKGROUND OF THE PASSAGE—

Every book has an ending… but end of the Gospel… is not an end in itself a beginning...
Luke 24 is the final chapter of the Gospel of Luke, and it unfolds on the most significant day in history—the resurrection day of Jesus Christ.
In the book of Luke, there are three key resurrection encounters:
The Empty Tomb (vv. 1–12): The women report the news to the disciples, but they struggle to believe it. Peter runs to see for himself and finds the linen cloths lying alone.
The Road to Emmaus (vv. 13–35): Two disciples, walking away in confusion, are joined by the risen Christ—though they don’t recognize Him. As He explains the Scriptures, their hearts burn within them. When He breaks bread with them, their eyes are opened, and they finally see who He is.
The third one is the encounter in the The Upper Room (vv. 36–49):
In that evening, the disciples are hiding behind locked doors, in the upper room..., confused… and their hearts still in trauma in event in the crucifixion...
—The are so much going on in in the same day… the rabbi they followed for 3 year died the worst death in the history 3 days ago but he was seen alive… and they have not caught up with that reality yet. They have not seen Jesus face to face yet...
Then—without warning—Jesus appears among them.
>Ask the disciples to read.
Luke 24:36–43 CSB
36 As they were saying these things, he himself stood in their midst. He said to them, “Peace to you!” 37 But they were startled and terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost. 38 “Why are you troubled?” he asked them. “And why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself! Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.” 40 Having said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 But while they still were amazed and in disbelief because of their joy, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 So they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate in their presence.
Jesus did not come back to Jerusalem after his resurrection to seek revenge on his enemies… but he came and offer peace… After coming from the dead, how easy it is for Jesus to go back to His persecutioner and executioner for revenge but he came to provide peace… a lasting peace… to humanity...
The first word that came out of His mouth was “Peace to you
But the disciples could believe on what they saw when they were face with the reality that Jesus is alive… Amen!
That is why… Jesus shows them His hands and feet, even eats broiled fish in their presence. The same Jesus they saw crucified couple of days ago… the same Jesus how ate, drank, walked and taught them for 3 years… is back with them bruises and pierce on the body, holes and wounds on hands and feet...
—The same Lord they buried now breathes in the same room with them. To provide peace to all nations.

—PROPOSITION OF RESOLUTION (Veiled)—

In this passage, something happens in the upper room that transforms the fearful disciples into the fearless disciples.

—TRANSITION—

And Dr. Luke gives us a the 3 movements that turned the confused and uncertain disciples into certain kind disciples… that shared the Gospel beyond their reach... How does the risen Christ turn ordinary, confused and uncertain disciples into bold witnesses to the world?
The first movement...

#1 He Explains the Word (vv. 44–45) [Revelation]

SITUATION (Textual Exposition)

Luke 24:44–45 CSB
44 He told them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.
Jesus takes His disciples on a journey through the all the scripture—through the law Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms...
—the only scripture they know... it is what we know as the old testament now
—showing that every part of Scripture whispers His name—it all points to Jesus Christ—as the promised redeemer, the messiah of not only of Israel but all the nations.
Then in v 45 Luke says something significant: “He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.”

Word Study:

The word “Open” means dianoigō in greek (v. 45)
Study Insight: The prefix dia- means through, and anoigō means to open.
—Together, dianoigō paints the picture of opening all the way throughnot a crack, but a complete unveiling.
To open fully what was previously closed;
—It implies unblocking what prevents understanding, perception, or reception.
When Jesus “opened their minds,” He did not just help them recall information.
—He pierced through mental blindness so that their understanding could finally align with divine truth.
opening the minds— not about knowing the information… it is about aligning our mind and our heart to the divine revelation —It not human reasoning—it is about divine truth that is revealed by the scripture.

COMPLICATION (Textual + Modern)

For years, these disciples had heard Jesus’ teachings, but they couldn’t connect the dots. They saw His miracles but missed His meaning.
All the Jews—they study the scripture from childhood—they possessed Scripture but lacked sight.
They were close to truth, than anyone else in the world, but far from understanding.
And that is the same for many of us also live today. We can be around truth but lives are still untouched by it.
>[How many message have we heard? How many times have you attended LG?]
>But how have to truth you’ve have changed you?
—We know bible facts and information but we miss the transformation—because we miss—Christ Himself.
Our generation has more access to Bible than any generation before us—yet many are still live in biblical ignorance and live in shallowness.
James 4:17 ESV
17 So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
People attend church, bible studies, life groups but still live untransformed life... still craving for materialism, gossiping, many fleshly desires, and misplaced priorities—because we only gained information about the bible.… but we did not encounter the presence of the risen Christ Himself...
Information and knowledge alone make us hear without truly hearing, see without truly seeing.
We can not be a witness if we do not first see clearly.
—because we will become a blind guide.
—Maturity is not about how knowledgeable you are, not about the amount of information you know…
—but by how much Scripture— shapes the way you think, speak, and respond.
We cannot disciple nations only by knowing for biblical information without living it.
We cannot even disciple our own family if we are merely living for information.
—Why, because our life is a testimony—first to our family then to others.
—Our family is the first one who can really notice our transformation.

RESOLUTION (Textual)

What did Jesus do?
—He said of v. 44 These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you
—v. 45 “Then he opened their minds to understand
First, He pointed the disciples to His words…and to himself in the scripture—to His presence.
He is reminding the disciples and all of us today importance of recognising Him in all the scriptures (not just pieces of the scripture but all the scriptures)...
He is reminding the disciples and all of us today importance His presencein opening our minds.
Without soaking ourselves to His Word and to His presence… —He cannot open our minds…
an we continue to live in shallow Christianity… and that is what Satan wants.
[Satan… loves coming the church… i.e. Job]
—Jesus cannot open the mind of anyonewho don’t have time for His word and who don’t have time [not intentional] to seek His presence.
So church, let me ask you this question?
How is your devotional life? (This question is already overly overly emphasized)
—Is it hit and missed or totally missed… —Because we don’t time anymore left for the Lord because our time is already consumed by many things...
For whatever reasons brothers & sisters… the most precious time that you will ever spend on the day—
—is not the time you spend in work,
—not even the time you spend to your familyfamily is just the second...
—to not even the time you spend to yourselfyourself is the third priority...
the most precious is the time you spend with the presence of Godin your daily devotion and prayer time.
If this is still your struggle—go back to our previous sermons and ask yourselves.
[Because all those messages, carries the truth of the word of God]
Narrow Door.
—Is my journey towards the narrow door? or I am still walking along in the wider road.
—[The Lord is coming soon...] [The peace talk… prophecy has been fullfilled...] [The season here...]
The Banquets Invitation.
—Am I making excuses no to attend the banquet invitation that the Lord has prepared?
—Are you intentionally, rejecting the invitation of the Lord, to meet Him every Sunday... in place of Bank… a time a half pay on Sunday?
—As you always hear… our priority will determine our [Destination, Master].
—Every ministry of the Lord banquet invitation. Even Sunday worship is a banquet invitation. And all His ministry is a banquet invitation.
—Am I journeying as a certain kind of disciples or I am still uncertain of my journey?
Some of us need to intentionally slow down.. to hear the voice God in our life. —Intentional busyness and misplaced priorities have become our blindness.
Our walk with Jesus must take priority in our daily live—His presence is the utmost important in our journey to become a certain kind of disciples. Amen!
So, the revelation of His word is important in Discipling Family, Discipling Others, Discipling Nations...
—Because understanding the Word precedes proclaiming the Work for His mission.
The one who knows what God has done can boldly declare what God will do.
—If you want to be a disciple who proclaims to the nations, let Christ first reignite your mind with His Word.
Don’t read the Bible for information; read for revelation and transformation. [Pause]
Pray as you read: “Lord, open my mind to understand Your Word and open my heart to obey it.”
Because without the Word, there’s no understanding; without the Word, there’s no intimacy with Jesus; and without the Word, there’s no illumination of His revelation. —He cannot explain you the Word if you are not interested.
When you let the risen Christ illuminate His Word, Scripture stops being optional, it becomes a lifeline.
So don’t just read bibleseek the Lord who speaks through it.
Sit with the Word until the Word sits within youbecause when Christ opens your mind, His word becomes the guidance of your transformation.”—Amen!

TRANSITION

So, the first movement—He explains the Word.
Then from Explaining the Word to He Establish the way.

#2 He Establishes the Way (vv. 46–47) [Redemption]

SITUATION (Textual Exposition)

After Jesus opened the minds of the disciple to understand Scripture, He summarizes the entire gospel in one sentence—[READ PASSAGE]
He said on vv. 46-47
Luke 24:46–47 CSB
46 He also said to them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead the third day, 47 and repentance for forgiveness of sins will be proclaimed in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
This is the heart of Christianity—this is very reason why we are here today. [He suffered and died and rose again… for the forgiveness of our sins]
The phrase “this is what is written” —grounds the gospel in divine authority.
The blueprint of our salvation is anchored to Jesus Himself founded in the gospel.

COMPLICATION (Textual + Modern)

During the time of the crucifixion, it was painfully difficult for the disciples to accept the death of Jesus.
They had built their entire hope around a political Messiah—a Redeemer who would crush Rome...
—but they got the opposite… because they witness Jesus—crushed and crucified by Rome instead.
The victory they longed for was not the victory they expected and received.
The cross and way of God did not fit their preference, and All the Jews [not only the disciples] struggled to believe in the plan of God, even though it is written all over in the scriptures.
This tension continues even in the life of people who come to the church every week.
Many people subtly or indirectly rejects the salvation of Christ—by living and submitting to our own preferences.
Preference has always been the enemy of repentance.
People want salvation but not repentance and surrender...
—We know our struggle, we recognise our weaknesses but we still chose to live the same way without change because we cannot afford to surrender
”We cannot claim salvation if our heart is not fully surrendered”
saving faith always involves total surrender to the Lordship of Jesus Christ… Amen!
The Lord Jesus Christ is clear when He says:
Luke 9:23 “Then he said to them all, “If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.”
Jesus defines discipleship—the essence of salvation—as daily surrender. —And to “follow” Christ means abandoning and denying our self-rule—our own preferences.
—There is no such thing as partial salvation in the bible…
—It is either you in Christ or notThere is no Klarna sort of thing when it comes to the salvation that Jesus had suffered and died for. Amen!
—We cannot make up our own version of salvation base on our own preferences other than what the Lord Jesus Christ had done... Amen!
To embrace the Christ’s redemption—we need repentance for forgiveness of our sinsas it says in v. 47.
Repentance in Greek means (metanoia) means a complete change of mind which results in a change of life(style). — that’s what it says in the original Greek language. A 180 degrees turn.
and Forgiveness (aphesis) means release, cancellation of debt, the act of freeing from an obligation.
—its the same term used for freeing prisoners… or pardoning a prisoner...
Together, the words “repentance for forgiveness of sins”, mark the path from rebellious, un-surrendered living to complete restoration.
—A restoration of relationship with God that leads to transformation. Amen!

ILLUSTRATION

In 1961, the Berlin Wall was built, separating East and West Germany. It became the defining symbol of the Cold War, dividing not just a city, but two worldsfreedom vs. oppression. For decades, families were torn apart...
—-The wall was built not to keep enemies out but to keep people in.
But when the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, people from both sides ran toward each other—laughing, crying, embracing and rejoicing. What had divided them for decades was suddenly torn down.
Freedom did not come because they earned it; it came because someone higher declared it.
That’s what Jesus did on the cross.
He tore down the wall between God and humanity and declared, “You are free.”

APPLICATION

So, Repentance for Forgiveness of sins, is not God’s punishment—it’s His pathway to joy and freedom, [if we chose to surrender to His Lordship.] Christ’s call is not “try harder” but “turn around—in a 180 degrees turn.” [to follow Him]
Before we can carry the message of salvation to the nations, it must first cut into our own hearts, first.
—Because we can not proclaim CHRIST’S REDEMTION—if we have not personally to experience it.
—We cannot lead others to a freedom and surrender, if never walked infreedom and surrender ourselves..
So, the gospel that changed the world must begins by changing us first. Amen!

TRANSITION

So, the 3 movements of Jesus to disciple nations?
#1 He Explains the Word.
#2 He Establishes the Way.
#3 He Empowers the Witness.

#3 He Empowers the Witness (vv. 48–49) [Recommission]

SITUATION (Textual Exposition)

Luke 24:48–49 CSB
48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And look, I am sending you what my Father promised. As for you, stay in the city until you are empowered from on high.
Jesus transitions from Explaining the Word to Establishing the Way to Empowering the Witness.
He didn’t gather His disciples to become religious philosophers or public debaters.
He called them to be witnesses—people who simply tell what they have personally seen, heard, and experienced. A true witness does not fabricate evidence; he testifies to truth.
Nowadays, truth can be fabricated backed with fabricated evidence.—because the punishment is negligible or affordable.
The Greek word for witness is martys (houtos) is where we get our English word martyr.
—The word martys—originally meant someone who testifies in court
—but the New Testament, it deepened to mean one who proclaims truth even when it costs everything.
The witnesses that Jesus Christ called are not someone who just speaks for Him,
—but someone who put their life at stake to testify on what Christ has done.
And this is the reason the claim of the Gospels stands—because the first witnesses chose to die to stand for what they had seen, heard and experienced. [SHOW THE PICTURE ON HOW THEY DIED]
People might die for what they think is true, but NOT for what they know is false—And that is the cornerstone of their credibility.
Jesus turns these once-fearful followers into fearless proclaimers of the Gospel.
—they stood before authorities, faced prisons, even death with unshakable boldness
—The transformation did not come from their personality or persuasion—but from the divine power of the Holy Spirit.
Before they were empowered… Jesus gave them a command, He says, “stay in the city”
—The word “stay” is more than just a command of waiting… or “to remain in a place”
—The word stay is the posture of waiting with purpose, and not wandering with worry… but remining in a specific place with intentional persistence—not inactivity but readiness it is pause before the power.
When Jesus commanded His disciples to “stay,” He wasn’t telling them to stall;
He was telling them to stay in alignment with the timing and empowering of God.
Becuase “A mission without unction is motion without power.”
unction means anointing...
The word “Empowered” in v. 49 — Greek dynamin
Meaning: to be clothed or wrapped in power.
Study Insight: conveys both divine protection and identity;
When a believer is empowered by the Holy Spirit—it doesn’t merely assist the believer; He inhabits them. [wrapped, cloth]
Before the disciples could go to the nations, they first had to grow and be [cloth and wrap] in His the presence. Before the disciples could speak for Him, they had to sit in stillness with Him.
Amen!

COMPLICATION (Textual + Modern)

Today, we live in an age addicted to activities. Noise has become our normal. Busyness has become a badge of honour, it become an acceptable form of pride
—because when we are busy we feel relevant.
We scroll more on the our mobile phone than we flick the page of our bible.
We confuse activity with maturity.
We confuse knowledge with spirituality.
We confuse noise with nearness.
We drain our energy with work, hobby and many other activities than we stay still long enough to speak and hear God.
Brothers and sisters… the Holy Spirit does not empower someone by accident…
He empower someone who is intentional..
Holy Spirit’s empowerment doesn’t fall on the busy—it falls on the STILL...
—It falls on someone who is hungry for God [for Jesus]… Amen!
When the Spirit empowers a disciple, confusion turns into conviction, weakness turns into witness, and timidity turns into testimony.
When the Holy Spirit is neglected, worship becomes performance, and ministry become pressure and source of exhaustion.

ILLUSTRATION

Before the engines and big ships on the sea...
Sailors could do everything right—raise the sails, set the course, and trim the ropes
—but without wind, the ship went nowhere.
But When the wind came, that same vessel surged forward with unstoppable force.
The Holy Spirit is that wind.
Without the Holy Spirit, our life drifts—tired, stagnant and without purpose—just living.
But with the Holy Spirit, our life moves—with power, purpose, and clarity—with joy.

APPLICATION

Church, if we truly desire to be empowered by the Holy Spirit—to become a certain kind of church God can use for His mission—then we must live as a certain kind of disciples:
hungry for His Word, surrendered to His redemption, and fully dependent on His Spirit.
When the Spirit empowers us, our weakness becomes our witness.
Our story becomes someone else’s salvation.
So let’s raise our sails, surrender our hearts, and let the wind of the Spirit carry us where He wills
—until our lives, our families, and our church move with the unstoppable power of the Holy Spirit.
“So Church, let’s not just talk about the Spirit’s wind—let us live so that when it blows, it finds our sails raised.” Amen!

CONCLUSION

Church, the story of Luke 24 is not just about what Jesus did then—it’s what He still does now. He still opens minds that are closed, redeems hearts that are cold, and fills ordinary people with extraordinary power. The same Spirit who turned fearful fishermen into fearless witnesses is the same Spirit who wants to move in you.
Let us not drift through life without purpose. Let us not just go with the flow.
Let us Fix your course in His Word.
Let us Walk the road of redemption with full surrender,
and let the wind of the Spirit move us beyond what effort could ever achieve.
When His Word renews our mind, when His cross refines our heart,
and when His Spirit strengthens our stepsour testimony becomes a witness for others.
May the the Lord Jesus Christ find in us a church that moves with conviction, speaks the true with courage, and lives with power for His glory. Amen!

CLOSING EXHORTATION

Let us bow down our head and let us mediate on the Lord’s message for us this today.
Church, this is the call of the risen Christ—He explains His Word, establishes His way, and empowers His witnesses. The same Jesus who opened the Scriptures to His disciples is here, ready to open your heart. The same Spirit who turned weakness into boldness is still breathing on His church today.
Maybe you’ve been going with the flow in your faith without real relationship with Jesus.
knowing the Bible but missing the presence of the Author.
Maybe you’ve believed in salvation but resisted surrender.
Or maybe you’ve served in ministry but grown weary because you’ve tried to move without the wind of the Spirit.
Let the Lord minister to you right at this moment. You don’t need perfect words—you just need an open heart.
Today, Christ is inviting you to return—to open your Bible with hunger, to walk the road of surrender again, and to lift your sails so His Spirit can move you forward.
Don’t let this moment pass, because the risen Lord still opens minds, redeems hearts, and empowers lives.
Let Him begin with you—right here, right now.

PRAYER

REFLECTION

What areas of my life have I kept under my own control instead of surrendering fully to Christ?
If the Holy Spirit moved in my life today the way He did in the disciples’, what would need to change in my priorities, my family, and my walk with God?
