The story of Joseph is fundamentally a narrative of divine providence, where God uses seemingly tragic circumstances to ultimately save His people[1]. The story explores suffering as a test of character, demonstrating that though Joseph was righteous, he was not spared from suffering, but was instead preserved through it by his faith. The narrative reveals that leaders must overcome opposition and suffering to rule with wisdom[2].
At its core, the tale illustrates how God can use human evil to bring about blessing - the brothers’ betrayal ultimately led to the family’s deliverance from famine. As Joseph himself acknowledged, what his brothers intended for evil, God meant for good, ultimately preserving many lives[3]. For Christians, the story also serves as a prophetic parallel to Jesus’ life, with striking similarities: both were beloved sons, betrayed by their own people, falsely accused, and ultimately exalted by God from the depths to great heights[3].
Despite facing numerous challenges - being sold into slavery, falsely accused, and imprisoned - Joseph remained diligent and faithful. His God-given ability to interpret dreams ultimately led to his elevation to a powerful position in Egypt, where he implemented a strategic plan to store food during seven years of plenty, preparing for seven years of famine[4]. Remarkably, Joseph demonstrated extraordinary moral character by helping and reconciling with the very brothers who had sold him into slavery, ensuring their survival[4].
If we are not careful we would rather our lives display God’s favor instead of our faith. Joseph life displays both…as should ours. J. Day
