Introductions
Let's be real - Life’s loud right now. Everybody’s pulling for your attention- Your phone, your friends, your goals, your emotions, your plans for the future. It’s like every part of your life is competing for your focus
You wake up, and before you even say, Thank you, Lord you already get a notification pulling you into another direction. The truth is - we’re not just fighting sin anymore; we're fighting for focus
Define the problem
Distractions are one of the biggest weapons the enemy uses to get you out off the will of God. He doesn’t have to destroy if he can just distract you. Because if he can steal your focus, he can steer your life.’’
Sometimes, distraction doesn't even look evil; it looks good. It can be opportunities, relationships, validation, or even ministry. Anything that pulls your heart away from presence and into pressure becomes a distraction.’’
We live in a world where everybody’s constantly distracted, scrolling, chasing, comparing, and reacting
And if we’re not careful, we can get so caught up in the noise that we start drifting away from the voice and presence of God.
Go back to the beginning
This started back in the Garden of Eden. The enemy didn’t come at Adam and Eve with a sword- he came with a conversation- He said Did God really say? He distracted them from what God said, he could disconnect them from who God is.
From that moment, humanity’s biggest struggle hasn’t been just sin - it’s separation. Every distraction is designed to pull you away from fellowship with God.
Satan still does the same thing today. He doesn’t want your peace. He doesn't want your joy. He wants your connection because when your fellowship is broken, your fire fades
In John 7, Jesus faced the same kind of distraction we do - pressure from people, mixed opinions, and a world that wanted to move before His time.
John 7;1-2
After this, Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him. 2 Now the Jews’ Feast of Booths was at hand.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Jn 7:1–2.
When you stand for Jesus, you disrupt darkness
When you really start walking with God, you’ll notice not everyone’s comfortable with your obedience.
That’s because light doesn't fit in comfortably with darkness- it exposes it.’’
Jesus wasn't hiding out of fear; he was walking in wisdom and discernment.
The religious leaders hated Him not because He was wrong, but because His light revealed their wrong motives.
Obedience will always agitate opposition
Jesus wasn’t seeking trouble - He was simply living out the Father's will.
But that alone caused a reaction
Darkness gets nervous when truth starts shining
Demons get restless when purity steps into the room
The enemy gets frustrated when you stop playing small and start standing firm.
Group questions
Why do you think walking in obedience sometimes causes conflict or tension?
Have you ever felt misunderstood or opposed just for doing what was right?
What is the difference between being bold in faith and being reckless?
John 7;3-10 ESV
So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. 4 For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” 5 For not even his brothers believed in him. 6 Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil. 8 You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.” 9 After saying this, he remained in Galilee. 10 But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Jn 7:3–10.
1.(Feast of Booths): The festival of Tabernacles
This was a major Jewish festival celebrating God’s provision during Israel’s wilderness journey
It took place in Jerusalem and frew large crowds.
Spiritually, it symbolized joy, thanksgiving and the hope of the coming messiah.
2. Jesus’ Brothers unbelief
Jesus’ brothers told Him to go show Himself publicly
Their advice sounded logical, but it came from unbelief and worldly thinking.
Jesus responds that His times had not yet come, showing that He operated on God’s timing, not human pressure
“We see in this passage that Jesus’ own family comes to Him, trying to push Him into proving that He’s the Messiah. His brothers say, ‘Go to Judea and show Yourself to the world.’ In other words, ‘If You really are who You say You are, then show everybody.
Jesus shows the way to fight distraction The best way to fight distraction is to have deep discernment.”
**“Discernment is spiritual awareness — it’s the ability to see what’s really going on beneath the surface. It’s when the Holy Spirit helps you recognize the difference between what looks good and what’s actually God.
The Greek word for discernment means ‘to judge rightly’ — to separate truth from deception. So when we talk about discernment, we’re talking about hearing what’s being said, but catching the spirit behind it.
Think about it like this: the enemy wants you to act out of your feelings instead of your faith. He wants you to react from fatigue, frustration, pressure, or desire — that’s how distraction starts.
In John 7, Jesus’ brothers told Him, ‘Go show Yourself to the world.’ But Jesus discerned that their advice didn’t come from faith — it came from pressure.
That’s why discernment matters. It keeps you from reacting to noise and helps you respond with wisdom.
Simply put: discernment keeps your focus clear when life gets loud.
Because when people start pulling on you — when pressure starts rising — discernment is what keeps you grounded in God’s will.”b
