Multiply the Mantle
Multiply the Mantle
As we close out this series and my wife and I get ready to take off for India tomorrow so I prayed for something to leave you to remember and I think this is important.
When God blesses you, He’s not rewarding you—-He’s entrusting you.
God is entrusting you with everything you have. We see this in the story of Elijah
9 When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.” And Elisha said, “Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me.”
10 And he said, “You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it shall be so for you, but if you do not see me, it shall not be so.”
11 And as they still went on and talked, behold, chariots of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
12 And Elisha saw it and he cried, “My father, my father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” And he saw him no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces.
13 And he took up the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan.
14 Then he took the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him and struck the water, saying, “Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” And when he had struck the water, the water was parted to the one side and to the other, and Elisha went over.
15 Now when the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho saw him opposite them, they said, “The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha.” And they came to meet him and bowed to the ground before him.
Most Christian’s live with the idea that Heaven is the only goal. I want to insert the idea
The legacy you leave is just as important as the destination you end up in.
The reality is your ceiling will become the next generations floor
Stewardship becomes succession. We see this is Elijah—He didn’t just do miracles, and become a prophet. The reason Elisha was able to receive a double portion from Elijah is because Elijah took what God gave him and multiplied it.
Mantles in the OT weren’t a fashion statement. It wasn’t the next best scarf, but it was a symbol of God’s delegated power—it was a symbol of authority, identity, and anointing. It’s a visible sign of God’s invisible call.
If you’re blessings die with you—if you’re anointing dies with you all you did was perform, but when your blessings and anointing live beyond you it’s a mantle.
Everything God is doing in this church, in your family, and in your life is meant to move onto the next generation. You aren’t living just for you. I understand that my relationship with God won’t automatically transfer to my kids, but I can do everything in my power to set them up for their greatest success and then believe God to do everything else.
Moses Passed his mantle to Joshua
David Passed his mantle to Solomon
Elijah passed his mantle to Elisha
Jesus passed his mantle to his Church
The stories we tell, the heroes we make, and the things we celebrate aren’t just to get you excited today, but give you a powerful place to start from.
The mantle doesn’t mimic it multiplies
This is important because if you go through Elisha’s life he didn’t repeat what Elijah did. He continued the work Elijah was doing.
The problem, Many times we see teh miracles, we see people inviting people to church we see others doing the work of the ministry.
The biggest key to walking in your identity and multiplying your mantle is:
Believing you can walk in something you didn’t earn and being obedient when it costs you something.
We see this in Elisha’s life. Elisha getes this double portion, he goes and fights the prophets of Baal he wins the fight, but every victory comes with warfare. Immediately after the huge victory Elisha meets this women named Jezebel. Jezebel threatens him and Instead of standing in his authority He runs.
Satan is going to do everything he can to intimidate you and scare you, but God will do everything in his power to advance you—it just depends on what voice you are going to listen to.
2 and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.
In this moment Paul is getting ready to die and is sitting in this Roman prison, but Paul is explaining the muliplicaiton mantle that he is passing on—He charges those whwo follow him to do two things:
Do what you’ve heard from me
teach it to other people.
Thankfully I’m not dying and i’m not permanently leaving, but we are multiplying. God is calling the church both on an individual level and a coperate level to multiply his blessing and to grow.
This is the blueprint we are set to follow
Truth-life- trust- transfer
We receive the truth- we live it out- we trust the process of growth- and we transfer it to other people through discipleship.
7 And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.
