Two Sons

Matthew 21:28–32 CSB
28 “What do you think? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘My son, go work in the vineyard today.’ 29 “He answered, ‘I don’t want to,’ but later he changed his mind and went. 30 Then the man went to the other and said the same thing. ‘I will, sir,’ he answered, but he didn’t go. 31 Which of the two did his father’s will?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you. 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you didn’t believe him. Tax collectors and prostitutes did believe him; but you, when you saw it, didn’t even change your minds then and believe him.
Jesus is talking to the Pharisees and this is a little after he goes to jerusalem before the last supper and before his crucifixion
Jesus is going off on the pharisees and calling them out for how they are denying him
In this story Jesus is talking about two sons who were told by their dad to go out in the field
What were the two responses?
One of the sons was like ok dad and didn’t do anything
They were like when your mom or dad asks you to put the dishes away while you’re playing a game or on facetime with your friends but you really don’t go
the other said no but then decided later that they would listen and went out to work
Jesus says that it’s better to be like the person who originally said no but then ends up following the father.
Why do you think Jesus says it’s better for someone to be like that?
He says that the religious people who said they followed God but never actually followed him are worse off than the sinners who heard about Jesus and decided to actually follow Him.
Some of us in here today say that we believe in Jesus, believe in God, have maybe said that we are christians but our actions have never backed up our words
If that’s you or you’re getting really close to looking like this, I want to encourage you to follow Jesus with your actions not just your words
that means getting in your God time and reading your Bible plan and praying 5 days a week
that means going and having gospel conversations
that means meeting with your church family and Grove family Sunday mornings and Sunday nights
if you’ve been saved and never been baptized getting baptized
But there’s another son that Jesus talks about
a different person here
Some of us here don’t claim to be Christians or believe in God but Jesus says that people who don’t believe in Him still can be saved and join the kingdom
Because it’s not about what you’ve done that get’s you into heaven or saved but it’s being saved
and if you’ve never been saved or you want to know how to be saved you can hold up your hand with me and i’ll help show you how you can be saved
five fingers
If you heard the gospel here tonight and you want to put your trust in Jesus as the boss of your life and trust him that He is God and died and resurrected for your sins I’ll help lead you in a prayer
So would everyone bow your heads and close your eyes with me
