I. His Priests (Lev. 21-22)

Priestly Standards (Lev. 21:1-9)

Cannot participate in funeral ceremonies for anyone who was not a close relative (vv. 1-4).

Cannot deface his body (vv. 5-6).

Must marry wives of good character, who is not a divorced woman (vv. 7-8).

Must have children who reflect the character of their father (v. 9).

High Priestly Standards (Lev. 21:10-15)

Forbidden from exhibiting normal signs of grief (e.g., uncovering head and tearing clothes) [v. 10].

Cannot participate in funeral activities, even for family members (vv. 11-12).

Must take a virgin wife from among his own people (vv. 13-15).

Physical Priestly Standards (Lev. 21:17-24)

The priests bodies must be “normal” and “whole” to demonstrate holiness.

A priest who is not cannot offer sacrifices, but is still able to partake in the portions set aside for the priesthood.

Priestly Food Standards (Lev. 22:1-16)

Any priest who is unclean (chs. 13-15) may not eat the priestly food (vv. 1-9).

No outsider can eat of the priestly portions (vv. 10-16).

Only those who belong to the priest’s family can participate.

God includes slaves and their children in this (v. 11).

Priestly Sacrifice Standards (Lev. 22:17-30)

No animal with blemishes could be used in sacrifice.

Just as the priests had to be whole, so did the animals.

Castrating lambs (v. 24)

In voluntary sacrifices (i.e., peace offerings), minor blemishes were acceptable (v. 23)

Reasoning (Lev. 22:31-33)

I am the Lord (v. 31).

I am the Lord who sanctifies you (v. 32).

I am the Lord who brought you out from the land of Egypt (v. 33).

1 Samuel 2:12–17 NASB95

When any man was offering a sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come while the meat was boiling, with a three-pronged fork in his hand. 14 Then he would thrust it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; all that the fork brought up the priest would take for himself.
