Tonight is going to look different you guys know I love my 3 points. Tonight isn’t a 3 point kind of night. It is a one question type of night. Here’s the question. Is Jesus your Lord or just your teacher?
Here’s the deal you guys are faithful to be here and to learn. You let Jesus teach you but to put it clearly it doesn’t matter if Jesus is your teacher. It matters if he is your Lord. Jesus is not looking for students he is looking for disciples. Looking at your life think about it are you a student of Jesus or are you a follower of Jesus? We are going to look at an example of someone who claimed Jesus as teacher but not Lord.
On the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”
“Go into the city to a certain man,” he said, “and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My time is near; I am celebrating the Passover at your place with my disciples.’ ” So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover. When evening came, he was reclining at the table with the Twelve. While they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”
Deeply distressed, each one began to say to him, “Surely not I, Lord?”
He replied, “The one who dipped his hand with me in the bowl—he will betray me. The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for him if he had not been born.”
Judas, his betrayer, replied, “Surely not I, Rabbi?”
“You have said it,” he told him.
Jesus the night before he would be killed told the the disciples one of you is going to betray me. look at what they each say in verse 22. Surely not I Lord. They knew Jesus knew them better than they knew themselves. So they asked it in this please don’t tell me its me type way. but look what they each call him. Lord.
all the disciples would run away when Jesus was arrested. Only John was there to watch him die. They made mistakes and let Jesus down. but he never stopped being their Lord. They aknowledged him as the ultimate authority over them because they fully believed he was the Son of God.
Now look at how Judas responded. Surely not I Rabbi? Rabbi doesn’t mean Lord, or king, or master, rabbi means teacher.
Judas acknowledged Jesus as his teacher, but he never acknowledged him as his Lord. Think about that Judas who would betray Jesus for money, who would not be saved and go to hell. considered Jesus as his teacher. What do we take from that. what do we do with that?
Knowing the teachings of Jesus does not make you follower of Jesus.
Judas knew Jesus’ teaching he probably agreed with most of it. He even helped pass out the bread at the feeding of the 5000, he was sent out by Jesus to heal people and teach himself. but at the end of the day knowing Jesus’ teaching wasn’t enough.
Judas, Satan and demons know Jesus’ teaching but it isn’t enough.
Because Jesus isn’t looking for us to call him teacher He is looking for us to call him Lord.
I heard this quote this week and Its stuck with me “Satan isn’t anti good morals, Satan is anti Jesus”.
There are lots of non Christians that have good morals. The goal of Christianity is not to get better morals.
Jesus didn’t come to this earth and die so he could teach you how to have better morals. Jesus came to earth and died so that he could be your savior and your Lord.
Nothing else that Jesus has to say matters if he isn’t your Lord. When someone is your Lord, your master, your boss. you dont just know what they have to say, you do what they say.
Learning is great and we need to learn what Jesus has to say. but just the act of learning can’t save you or transform your life.
Submitting to Jesus as your Lord. Meaning you do what he says. That is what will transform your life.
Back to the question of the night. Is Jesus your Lord or is he just your teacher? The answer to that question doesn’t show up in what you know. It shows up in what you do and what you believe?
Is he your Lord? thats the most important question you can answer. not how many souled outs have you been to, not how many bible stories do you know. not how many mission trips have you been on.
Is he your Lord. meaning if you want to do something and he wants you to do something else. You choose what he wants over what you want. Because he is your Lord.
Jesus isnt your Lord if you only do what he wants when it lines up with what you want.
He isn’t your Lord if your first reaction to a situation isn’t thinking about what he wants you to do.
He is your Lord when you declare him as your Lord with your words and with your actions.
Is he your Lord or just one of many voices speaking into your life that you listen to.
You have lots of voices that speak into your life. You have your teachers, parents, grandparents, pastors, coaches, mentors. and you can learn from all of them. but none of them are your Lord. You may be under their authority and you should do what they tell you. But only one can be your Lord. Cause a Lord is above all. Is your Lord Jesus? or is he just one of many voices trying to teach you?
I want us to look and see what Jesus did next after Judas leaves with those who had declared him Lord.
As they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take and eat it; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks, he gave it to them and said, “Drink from it, all of you. For this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. But I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus took the bread and the cup and used them to show what was about to happen to himself. He shared this intimate moment with them knowing that even though they just said he was their lord they were going to not be there for him when he needed them.
Guys he knows you aren’t going to be perfect. He knows you are going to drop the ball. and he still wants to be your Lord and your savior.
Is he your Lord or just a teacher?
Here is what we are going to do tonight. we are going to have communion but we are going to do it differently. We are all going to pray and answer that question for ourselves is Jesus your Lord? take some time. I went quick tonight to give time for this.
You are going to spend time in prayer examine your heart and answer that question is he your Lord? then spend time thanking him for what he did when his body was broken and blood shed for you, confess when you havent lived like he’s your lord. and when you feel like you’re ready come up on your own. take some bread rip it off yourself to remind you of his body being broken for you. then dip the bread in the juice to remind you of the precious blood shed for you.
If tonight you sit there and you can’t honestly say he isn’t your Lord don’t do it. if you are holding on to sin that you don’t want to confess don’t do it. To say Jesus is just a teacher is to waste the blood shed for you. and if he’s just a teacher to you pray to God about that and this could be the day you make him your Lord.
Hey guys I am going to be teaching shorter this week and we are going to do communion and then questions this week. excited about it! see you Sunday.
Scripture Matthew 26:17-30
Main point: Is Jesus your Lord or Just your Teacher?
Questions:
1 In the passage, the other disciples call Jesus “Lord” but Judas calls him “Rabbi” (teacher). What’s the difference between calling someone your teacher and calling them your Lord?
2.What stops people from making Jesus Lord — even when they respect His teaching?
3. If someone in the group isn’t sure what it means to make Jesus Lord, how would you explain it simply in one or two sentences?
4 .Who in your life knows Jesus as a teacher but not as Lord? Name people and then pray for them, that God would soften their hearts and use them to reach them.
