His Eternality - The Timeless Word with God and is God
His Eternality - The Timeless Word with God and is God
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God
His Pre-Incarnate Work - Creation, Life/Light, Victory Over Darkness
His Pre-Incarnate Work - Creation, Life/Light, Victory Over Darkness
All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
His Forerunner - Preparing the way for the True Light
His Forerunner - Preparing the way for the True Light
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.
His Rejection - The Tragedy of Unbelief
His Rejection - The Tragedy of Unbelief
The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.
His Reception - The Triumph of Faith
His Reception - The Triumph of Faith
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
His Deity - ???
His Deity - ???
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’ ”) For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.
The Light Comes: Rejected, Yet Received
The Light Comes: Rejected, Yet Received
John 1:9
The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.
Light
John uses the word light 23 times in the Gospel of John and 5 times in 1 John
Light
John the Baptist was not the light (vs 8).
He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.
South of teh Boarder signs start 200 mile out
Don’t miss it, this way, almost there, this is what you have to look forward to
The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.
The light here is the Pure Light/The Truth - no darkness, no sin
Prophesied 700 years earlier
The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,
on them has light shone.
The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.
More on He is the pure light
This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
Light: Truth no Lies, Life overcame death, Way
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Jesus is the Light. Light is a big deal
Day one God Created Light (Gen 1:3)
Jesus is the light of the world (John 8-12)
No need for Light in the New Jerusalem - God is the light. (Rev 22.5)
Not going to go in to this, but for those who want to dig a little deeper
John 1:10
He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.
Celebration/excitement!!! Jesus came to earth, the light of the world
Rejected by the world
Better talk about the word WORLD since it is used 78 times throughout John’s Gospel
World - 3 Different meanings
People
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Planet
Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.
Sin/Darkness
And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.
we just focused on this in the month of October 1 John 2:15–17 “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”
Make the connection between John 1:10 “He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.” to Colossians 1:16-
For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
John 1:11
John 1:11 “He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.”
Who were his people ? Jews
other gospels have Jesus lineage , The people should have been expecting and embracing Jesus
Jesus in Matthew is talking to the Sanhedrin (these would be the religious leaders/experts that would have know all of the scriptures and the verse in
What Is my Transition
And he began to speak to them in parables. “A man planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a pit for the winepress and built a tower, and leased it to tenants and went into another country. When the season came, he sent a servant to the tenants to get from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. And they took him and beat him and sent him away empty-handed. Again he sent to them another servant, and they struck him on the head and treated him shamefully. And he sent another, and him they killed. And so with many others: some they beat, and some they killed. He had still one other, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ And they took him and killed him and threw him out of the vineyard. What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants and give the vineyard to others. Have you not read this Scripture:
“ ‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
this was the Lord’s doing,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”
And they were seeking to arrest him but feared the people, for they perceived that he had told the parable against them. So they left him and went away.
The jewish leader were mad a Jesus because he was speaking about them Jesus was quoting Psalm 118:22 “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.”
The stone that the builders rejected
as become the cornerstone.
Return to your key Text
He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.
Rejected by his people
Who would you be?
Are you choosing to follow the light?
Transition to 1:12, because there were some that did receive the gift.
John 1:12
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
Receive and believe are synonymous with genuine faith
Receiving meaning is receiving a gift
Pervasive false teaching - we are all God’s Children NOT TRUE
There are people who received the gift and people who loved the darkness more (couldn’t give up their sin)
God is calling you out of the WORLD (what world word am using here?), Will you receive, believe and become a child of God?
John 1:13
who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
"Not of blood": Not through physical descent or Jewish lineage (contra reliance on Abrahamic heritage; cf. John 8:39–44 “
do you know who I am, I am a Pastor’s kid, My parents are a big deal in the church, I come from a long line of Christians
"Nor of the will of the flesh": Not by carnal urges or human passion, such as procreation. (Pride of having sons)
Not of the will of man - Not by human resolve (work harder at not sining, living by the law, effort, or ritual (baptism) our own decision (being a good person)
he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
But of God You must be born again - spiritual birth
Born again - Means born from above, it has a meaning of time and location
Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Separated from God by sin. We were dead. Without Jesus you are spiritually dead.
We were dead in sin/darkness
And you were dead in the trespasses and sins
Offered the true light —>
Examine you Heart in the Light (Truth)
And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.
Receive, Believe and Become (reference to v12) This was my earliest introduction to the Gospel
victory over sin and death
By grace we are saved and not out own work
See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
