Revelation Unlocked: Understanding What God Actually Said
Revelation Unlocked: Understanding What God Actually Said
When I was a young child I was told how hard the book of Revelation was and was basically discouraged from reading it.
I was told there were many interpretations and that they were hard to understand.
Sadly I know too many adults that still feel that way. They think people that try to understand prophecy are a little tweaked. That its a “mystery” and not for anyone to understand except some mealy mouthed PhD from Princeton seminary.
How sad, and what a lie from the enemy.
I recently read a book called Revelation: Four Views which categorized then compared and contrasted the four major belief systems about end time prophecy.
Only one of the four thought to actually take the book at face value.
Before I continue, remember, many sincere Christians take the non literal translation. We need to respect them and not get into meaningless arguments over it. Instead spend your energy sharing the gospel with the lost.
And to be fully transparent, I take a premillennial, pre-tribulation, with a Futuristic view stance with the belief that the bible should be taken literally.
What was clear was that other views left much to the human imagination. Or to make it sound more intelligent, they use the word symbolism.
Preterist View
This view believes that the end time events all happened in the early church with the fall of Jerusalem in AD 70 being a central figure in their views.
They believe that Jesus coming in a cloud referred to the destruction of Jerusalem.
They interpret Nero as the Beast and the Babylon representing Jerusalem.
The Roman empire is the government
Historic View
The historic view sees the events happening from the early church to the present.
This interpretation is highly subjective, with each generation of scholars tending to align the prophecies with events in their own time, resulting in as many as fifty different interpretations.
The issue with both of these views is that they use their own human logic to “fill in the blanks”.
The preterist view blames the Jewish people that rejected Christ.
No doubt their personal feelings and prejudice against the Jewish people helped them draw these wrong conclusions.
They created a widespread but biblically inaccurate theology called replacement theology. Where the Christians took over as God’s chosen people. We as Christians received the blessings of Abraham.
As for the Jewish people? They had their chance and blew it. They were cast aside.
What a neat little bow to put on that package. It was clean and easy. And the American church taught it like it was fact. I was taught it. I’m sure many of you were too. But don’t you believe it!
If you do believe replacement theology, I want to you reread Romans chapters 9-11 which will blow that satanic hatred of the Jewish people right out of you.
God made an everlasting covenant with Abraham. When God says forever. How long is that? Does God change His mind? Hebrews 13:8 - He is the same yesterday, today and forever! Read the bible as it is written! The plan for his remnant people is clearly defined.
For the Historic view it is simple to see what happens.
Everyone sees God’s word from their own point of view and time in history.
We see this today. A war breaks out and everyone points to the war of Armageddon. Oh its happening! The time is now!
We are so self absorbed in our our space in history that we fail to see the big picture.
Just in recent history World War 1 was the war to end all wars. Jesus must be coming back now! It can’t get any worse than this! Then World War 2 came. Hitler replaced Nero as the Anti-Christ. As did a bunch of historical leaders between them.
If you went into a time machine and stopped every century to speak to Christian leaders. Each could give you a compelling argument a to why Jesus was coming back in their era. But what did Jesus tell us?
Matthew 24:36 ““But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.”
The historic view is so subjective that even those who adhere to it can’t agree on what part of history represents what part of prophecy.
Is our God a God of confusion? Colossians 1:26–27 tells us “the mystery which has been hidden from ages and from generations, but now has been revealed to His saints. To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
There is no mystery! All things were revealed! God is not trying to confuse us by having us rely on our own interpretation.
Spiritual View
Ah the spiritual view. The Harvard egg heads at their finest.
The elites in this view believe everything in the bible is a fairytale or nursery rhyme.
The stories, and I hate that word. Stories are what you tell children. Stories are fictional. Do you hear people say I want to tell you the story of George Washington? No! It’s the history of George Washington. It’s also the history of creation, of Abraham, of Noah, of David, of Jesus. History is facts. Stories are made up.
Sorry, the “stories” the spiritualists believe tell us about good and bad. That good will win. But not in the literal ways described. They are only written that way to tell us a moral story.
In addition, these are the one’s who claim intellectual superiority. Only THEY can interpret. And if we want to understand the bible, we need them to interpret it for us.
Nothing in the bible should be taken literally.
Well if everything is subject to interpretation. Why should we even read the bible?
You just caught Satan at his finest! How many people shy away from reading the bible because they say they can’t understand it?
I opened talking about being discouraged to read Revelation “because no one could understand it”.
That’s a lie. I read Revelation and everything is quite clear. It’s simple, take it as it is written!
The American Bible Society’s annual report, “State of the Bible USA” found that only 39% of Christians open there bible 3 to 4 times a year or more outside of church. The interpretation lie has played a big part in this lack of reading the bible.
The lie of not reading the bible has worked. How much has the spiritual view had to do with it? As I said, it’s a big part of it. Just ask many people why they don’t read it and you will hear the spiritualist lie. It’s vague, I can’t understand it. The list goes on.
The spiritual view has ravaged our mainline denominations.
Many of these churches have abandoned the gospel message for a watered down be nice to everyone message. The salvation message has been long forgotten in these churches. They have done as much to lead Christians astray with symbolism as any attack on Christianity in history. What does the bible say about them?
2 Timothy 3:5 “having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!”
2 Timothy 4:3–4 “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.”
History of symbolism in the church
Symbolism was used to confuse and control the people.
The early Catholic church seized the opportunity to use it to control the masses.
Only THEY could interpret scripture.
Unfortunately this went on for centuries until moveable type made the scripture more accessible and the reformation led us gradually back to reading the word and accepting what it said, not what we were taught.
Too many believe the deception of symbolism in the scripture - they do what those of us that have studied Organizational Leadership call MSUing. Or making stuff up.
The human brain has an incredible way of taking facts and interpreting them.
These interpretations come from our life experiences, our upbringing, and the world around us.
We naturally make things about us and relate things to what we know or have learned.
Symbolism in the scripture is nothing more that old fashioned MSUing.
We have seen that some people do it with good intentions.
Some MSU because of their pride. The Princeton seminary egg heads want to show the world they are smarter than everyone else.
And some like the early church did it to control the masses.
The only way to read the bible is to take it literally. Why the Bible Should Be Taken Literally…
God’s Word Claims to Be Truth — Not Allegory
“Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.” — John 17:17
If Scripture is truth, it must be understood in its plain, ordinary meaning unless context clearly indicates a metaphor. When Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6), He did not mean it figuratively. Truth demands literal interpretation to maintain its authority and clarity.
Jesus and the Apostles Took Scripture Literally
Jesus constantly quoted the Old Testament as literal history:
He affirmed Adam and Eve as real people (Matthew 19:4–6).
He referenced Noah’s flood as a literal event (Matthew 24:37–39).
He spoke of Jonah in the fish as an actual historical moment (Matthew 12:40).
If Jesus, who is the Word made flesh (John 1:14), took Scripture literally, then so should we.
Literal Interpretation Guards Against False Doctrine
When people spiritualize or allegorize Scripture, truth becomes subjective.
Literal interpretation anchors us to God’s intended meaning rather than human imagination.
“Knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation.” — 2 Peter 1:20
God meant what He said, and He said what He meant.
The Prophecies Already Fulfilled Were Literally Fulfilled
Hundreds of Old Testament prophecies about Christ were fulfilled exactly as written:
Born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2 → Matthew 2:1)
Betrayed for thirty pieces of silver (Zechariah 11:12 → Matthew 26:15)
Hands and feet pierced (Psalm 22:16 → John 20:25)
Buried in a rich man’s tomb (Isaiah 53:9 → Matthew 27:57–60)
If God fulfilled past prophecy literally, then consistency demands we expect future prophecy to be fulfilled literally as well.
Literal Interpretation Honors God’s Integrity
A literal Bible means a faithful God.
If His promises and warnings were only symbolic, how could we trust His promises of salvation, heaven, or resurrection?
“God is not a man, that He should lie.” — Numbers 23:19
“For I am the LORD, I change not.” — Malachi 3:6
The same unchanging God who literally judged the world by flood and literally delivered Israel from Egypt will literally fulfill every prophetic word He has spoken.
Why Prophecies (Revelation, Daniel, Ezekiel, Zephaniah, etc.) Should Be Taken Literally
Prophecy Is Simply History Written in Advance
Prophecy is not poetry — it’s pre-written history inspired by God.
“I am God… declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done.” — Isaiah 46:9–10
If God declares “the end from the beginning,” it means He intends those words to describe real events, not just symbols.
Prophecies Fulfilled Literally Are the Pattern for Those Yet to Come
The same pattern of literal fulfillment seen in messianic prophecies applies to end-time prophecy.
If Isaiah’s prediction of the virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14) was literal, then Daniel’s prophecy of a literal Antichrist and tribulation (Daniel 9:27) must also be literal.
God doesn’t change His interpretive standard midstream.
The Book of Revelation Begins by Saying It’s a Revelation, Not an Allegory
“The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants things which must shortly come to pass.” — Revelation 1:1
“Revelation” (Greek apokalypsis) means unveiling — not concealing.
If it’s meant to be revealed, not hidden in mystery, then the natural interpretation is the literal one.
The Prophets Were Told Their Words Would Be Literally Fulfilled
Ezekiel repeatedly heard God say:
“Then they shall know that I am the LORD, when I have done all these things.” — Ezekiel 24:24
Daniel was told to “seal up the book until the time of the end” (Daniel 12:4), meaning the words would literally unfold in the future, not remain poetic riddles.
Literal Interpretation Affirms God’s Sovereignty Over Nations
Prophecies about nations — Babylon, Persia, Greece, Rome — were fulfilled in exact order as Daniel foresaw (Daniel 2, 7).
If the earlier parts of Daniel’s visions were fulfilled precisely, the final parts — the rise of the Antichrist, the Tribulation, and Christ’s Millennial Reign — must also be literal and forthcoming.
Prophecy Has Clear Geographic, Political, and Historical Markers
Zechariah, Ezekiel, and Revelation mention specific cities (Jerusalem, Babylon), rivers (Euphrates), and nations (Persia, Gog, Magog). All which are easily recognized today. Thousands of years later.
To spiritualize these away strips them of meaning.
“I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle.” — Zechariah 14:2
This isn’t symbolic of the “battle for your heart.” It’s a literal war over a literal city.
Jesus Promised Literal Future Events
“Immediately after the tribulation… they shall see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.” — Matthew 24:29–30
Jesus describes a visible, physical return — not a symbolic one.
If His first coming was literal, His second coming must be literal too.
The Danger of Not Taking Prophecy Literally
If we spiritualize Revelation or Daniel:
The Antichrist becomes “just a spirit of evil.”
The Tribulation becomes “life’s general hardships.”
The Millennium becomes “a metaphor for the church age.”
That approach denies God’s plain words and opens the door to confusion and deception.
Literal prophecy interpretation keeps believers alert and anchored.
“Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.” — Matthew 24:44
Conclusion
The Bible was not written to confuse, but to reveal.
Every prophecy, promise, and parable points to a real God acting in real history.
If Genesis was literal, and the Gospels were literal, then Revelation — the completion of God’s redemptive story — must be literal too.
“For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one jot or tittle will pass from the Law until all is fulfilled.” — Matthew 5:18
God’s Word is literal, dependable, and unchanging — because God Himself is literal, dependable, and unchanging.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, Thank You for giving us Your Word — not as mystery, but as revelation. Open our eyes to see the truth of Your prophetic plan. Help us stand firm in faith, rightly dividing the Word of Truth, and expecting Your promises to come to pass exactly as You declared. Strengthen Your Church to read, believe, and live by every word You have spoken. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.
the mystery which has been hidden from ages and from generations, but now has been revealed to His saints. To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.
Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation,
“God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?
“For I am the Lord, I do not change;
Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.
Remember the former things of old, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things that are not yet done, Saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, And I will do all My pleasure,’
The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants—things which must shortly take place. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John,
Thus Ezekiel is a sign to you; according to all that he has done you shall do; and when this comes, you shall know that I am the Lord God.’ ”
For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem; The city shall be taken, The houses rifled, And the women ravished. Half of the city shall go into captivity, But the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city.
“Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.

Revelation Unlocked: Understanding What God Actually Said
When I was a young child, I was told that the Book of Revelation was “too hard to understand.”
That it was full of “symbolism” and “mystery.”
That only a seminary scholar could make sense of it.
Sadly, many Christians still believe that lie today.
But the truth is this: Revelation isn’t confusing — unbelief is.
The enemy wants to convince believers that God’s Word is shrouded in mystery so they’ll stop reading it.
But God never wrote His Word to confuse you — He wrote it to reveal His plan to you!
I recently read a book comparing the four main views of Revelation. Only one — the literal, futuristic, premillennial view — took God’s Word at face value.
The others spiritualized it, symbolized it, or reinterpreted it through human logic.
But friend, if God fulfilled every prophecy of Christ’s first coming literally, why would we believe the prophecies of His second coming are symbolic?
Every city, every event, every timeline is exactly where God said it would be.
“Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.” — John 17:17
“For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one jot or tittle will pass from the Law until all is fulfilled.” — Matthew 5:18
The Bible was not written in code for the elite. It was written in truth for the believer!
When we read it literally, faith rises, confusion breaks, and our hope in Christ’s return is strengthened.
This message dives into how false symbolism crept into the Church, how replacement theology distorted the truth about God’s covenant with Israel, and how allegorical thinking has weakened the modern Church.
But God is restoring a generation that reads His Word as He wrote it — not as man reinterprets it!
If Genesis was literal… if the Gospels were literal… then Revelation must be literal too.
