Perhaps the greatest hindrance to people coming to Christ is not the cross… not the Gospel… not Jesus Himself.
It’s the blatant hypocrisy people see within what they call “Christianity.”
Many say, “The Church is full of hypocrites, and besides, nothing has caused more wars in history than religion.”
And honestly… I can’t argue that religion has caused pain. But what I can say is this: a hypocrite is not a Christian.
What a Hypocrite Really Is
The word “hypocrite” means “pretender.
He’s not a Christian who failed. He’s a non-Christian pretending to be one.
Matthew 7:16 — “You will know them by their fruits.”
Just like bank employees train to spot counterfeit bills by studying the genuine ones, the only way to spot spiritual counterfeits is to know the real thing.
A genuine believer is faithful, kind, loving, good, humble, patient, self-controlled, and speaks the truth in love.
A pretender may use the language of faith, but their life denies it.
The World Sees the Counterfeits
When someone on TV does something evil and slaps a Bible verse on it — that doesn’t make them a Christian.
Jesus said in John 13:35, “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
The mark of a true Christian is love — not religious slogans or politics.
Hypocrisy Isn’t Just “Out There”
We must also look in the mirror.
The hypocrite is the teenager who hides lust behind purity.
The businessman who smiles while cutting corners.
The nation that says “In God We Trust” while mocking His name.
Matthew 7:5 — “First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”
God hates hypocrisy more than the world does.
Hypocrisy Is a Deadly Deception
Matthew 23:27 — Jesus said, “Woe to you… hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.”
If the hypocrisy of others offends you, imagine how much it offends a holy God.
Every hypocrite will face judgment. But make no mistake — a hypocrite is not the Church.
Jesus’ true Church is made of born-again believers who are forgiven, redeemed, and growing in grace.
Invitation to Examine Your Heart
If hypocrisy has been your excuse to reject Jesus, don’t let pretenders keep you from the real thing.
The failures of people are not the failures of Christ.
Romans 14:12 — “So then each of us shall give account of himself to God.”
If you’re in the Church, don’t pretend. Repent.
If you’re outside the Church, stop judging Jesus by the counterfeit and come meet the real Savior.
Prayer: Father, Forgive us for the ways we have worn masks before You and others. Expose every form of hypocrisy in us and in Your Church. Help us to walk in truth, love, humility, and genuine faith. And Lord, may no counterfeit Christian ever keep someone from finding the real Jesus. In Your holy name, Amen.
You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles?
By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.
So then each of us shall give account of himself to God.

New Message: “The Hypocrite Isn’t a Christian — He’s a Pretender”
Hypocrisy is real — but it’s not Christianity.
A hypocrite is a non-Christian pretending to be a Christian.
Matthew 7:16 — “You will know them by their fruits.”
John 13:35 — “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Don’t let pretenders keep you from the Savior.
Look to Jesus — the real thing.

The Hypocrite Isn’t a Christian — He’s a Pretender
Perhaps the greatest hindrance to people coming to Christ isn’t intellectual objections — it’s the hypocrisy they see in religion.
“The church is full of hypocrites.”
“Religion has caused more wars than anything else.”
And you know what? They’re partly right.
But let’s be clear: a hypocrite is not a Christian. The word hypocrite means “pretender.”
They’re not on God’s side. They’re on the world’s side, wearing a mask.
Just as bank tellers spot counterfeit bills by knowing the real thing, we spot counterfeit faith by knowing Christ and His Word.
A true believer walks in love, humility, patience, and truth. (Matthew 7:16, John 13:35)
Hypocrisy is not limited to pulpits and politicians. It lives in the mirror. The heart of man is deceitful without Christ. (Jeremiah 17:9)
But here’s the good news — the failure of pretenders does not change the power of the Gospel. Jesus is real, faithful, and unchanging.
If hypocrisy has kept you from Him, don’t let a counterfeit keep you from the original. If hypocrisy has crept into your life, it’s time to repent and return to real faith.

“I will not let the hypocrisy of others harden my heart. I will fix my eyes on Jesus, the real Savior, not religious pretenders. I will walk in authenticity, truth, and love — the marks of a true disciple.”
