Jesus declared He would build His Church (Matt 16:8) and 2,000 years later His Church is still going strong. His Church is global in its reach and it exists in both in visible and invisible forms.
The invisible Church is the true church, which only God can see: born-again believers, past, present, and future. (Got Questions). This involves the OT saints along with all of the NT believers.
The visible Church is that which we can see and observe. It is expressed in the physical assembly and gathering for the purpose of worship. The visible church is comprised of true believers and unbelievers. The visible church is the topic of study.
What makes a Church a true church? Another way of looking at this is by asking is it possible to have a false church? The answer from the NT is YES - it is possible to have a false church (Rev 2:9). Satan is the master of counterfeit and he uses things that look like the real thing to confuse people.
