1. It is grounded in the holiness of God
2. It is objective, not subjective
3. The penalty for sin must be paid in full
4. No person can pay this for themselves. The penalty for sin is death.
5. Only God can pay this penalty, but He had to do so as a man.
6. The God-Man Jesus Christ paid the penalty
7. Atonement could only be accomplished in this way
I.
Christ died for others
John 10:11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his
life for the sheep.
2 Corinthians 5:15
and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for
themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.
Hebrews 2:9
But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels,
namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering
of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for
everyone.
1 John 3:16
By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought
to lay down our lives for the brothers.
II.
Christ died for the Sins of Others
1 Corinthians 15:3
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that
Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,
2
Romans 4:25
who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our
justification.
Romans 8:3
For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do.
By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he
condemned sin in the flesh,
Galatians 1:4
who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age,
according to the will of our God and Father,
1 Peter 3:18
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the
unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the
flesh but made alive in the spirit,
III. Christ Bled: The Blood of Christ
Romans 5:9
Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more
shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
Revelation 5:9
And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll
and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you
ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people
and nation,
Ephesians 2:13
3
But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought
near by the blood of Christ.
1 Peter 1:18–19
18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited
from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or
gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb
without blemish or spot.
1 John 1:7
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship
with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all
sin.
Revelation 7:14
I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the
ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their
robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
1 Corinthians 11:23–25
23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the
Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and
when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body,
which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way
also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new
covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in
remembrance of me.”
Matthew 26:26–28
26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it
broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my
body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave
4
it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of
the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of
sins.
Mark 14:22–24
22 And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke
it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.” 23 And he
took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they
all drank of it. 24 And he said to them, “This is my blood of the
covenant, which is poured out for many.
Luke 22:19–20
19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and
gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do
this in remembrance of me.” 20 And likewise the cup after they had
eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new
covenant in my blood.
IV. Christ Atoned: His death was an Atoning Sacrifice
Romans 3:25
whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received
by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine
forbearance he had passed over former sins.
1 Corinthians 5:7
Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really
are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.
Ephesians 5:2
And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a
fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
5
1 John 4:10
In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and
sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
Revelation 5:6
And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the
elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven
horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out
into all the earth.
Mark 10:45
For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to
give his life as a ransom for many.”
Matthew 20:28
even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to
give his life as a ransom for many.”
Acts 20:28
Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the
Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God,
which he obtained with his own blood.
Galatians 3:13–14
13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse
for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a
tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might
come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit
through faith.
Ephesians 1:7
6
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our
trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,
Colossians 1:13–14
13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred
us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have
redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
V.
Christ Substituted: Penal Substitution
Romans 3:21–26 (ESV)
21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart
from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to
it— 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ
for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have
sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by
his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ
Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood,
to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness,
because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former
sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so
that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in
Jesus.
Hebrews 9:15–28 (ESV)
15 Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those
who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance,
since a death has occurred that redeems them from the
transgressions committed under the first covenant. 16 For where
a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be
established. 17 For a will takes effect only at death, since it is
not in force as long as the one who made it is alive.
7
18 Therefore not even the first covenant was inaugurated
without blood. 19 For when every commandment of the law had
been declared by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of
calves and goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and
sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20 saying,
“This is the blood of the covenant that God commanded for
you.” 21 And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both
the tent and all the vessels used in worship. 22 Indeed, under
the law almost everything is purified with blood, and
without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.
23 Thus it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to
be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves
with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ has entered, not
into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true
things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of
God on our behalf. 25 Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as
the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not
his own, 26 for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly
since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared
once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the
sacrifice of himself. 27 And just as it is appointed for man to die
once, and after that comes judgment, 28 so Christ, having been
offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time,
not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting
for him.
VI. Christ can Atone: He is Sinlessness
2 Corinthians 5:21
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him
we might become the righteousness of God.
Hebrews 4:15
8
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with
our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we
are, yet without sin.
1 Peter 2:22–24
22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23
When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he
did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges
justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we
might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have
been healed.
1 John 3:5
You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him
there is no sin.
VII. Christ is Our High Priest
Hebrews 7:26–28
26 For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest,
holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above
the heavens. 27 He has no need, like those high priests, to offer
sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people,
since he did this once for all when he offered up himself. 28 For the
law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of
the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been
made perfect forever.
Hebrews 8:6–7
6 But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more
excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is
enacted on better promises. 7 For if that first covenant had been
faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second.
9
Hebrews 9:15
Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are
called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has
occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under
the first covenant.
Hebrews 8:1–2
1 Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high
priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty
in heaven, 2 a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord
set up, not man.
Hebrews 9:24
For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which
are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in
the presence of God on our behalf.
Hebrews 9:12–14
12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the
blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus
securing an eternal redemption. 13 For if the blood of goats and bulls,
and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer,
sanctify for the purification of the flesh, 14 how much more will the
blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself
without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to
serve the living God.
Hebrews 10:11–14
11 And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the
same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when Christ
had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the
right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time until his enemies should
10
be made a footstool for his feet. 14 For by a single offering he has
perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
Hebrews 10:19–20
19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy
places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he
opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh,
