Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho. And the Lord showed him all the land, Gilead as far as Dan, all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the western sea, the Negeb, and the Plain, that is, the Valley of Jericho the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar. And the Lord said to him, “This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, ‘I will give it to your offspring.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there.” So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord, and he buried him in the valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth-peor; but no one knows the place of his burial to this day. Moses was 120 years old when he died. His eye was undimmed, and his vigor unabated. And the people of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days. Then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended. And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. So the people of Israel obeyed him and did as the Lord had commanded Moses. And there has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, none like him for all the signs and the wonders that the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land, and for all the mighty power and all the great deeds of terror that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.

Highlights death of Moses
Reminds us of sin
Encouraging
God servants die and are replaced by others
God is always the same
His people, and those who lead and serve them, are always in his hands
Moses views the Land (v1-4)
Moses views the Land (v1-4)
Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho. Moses went up on Mount Nebo to view the land
Moses’ sin at Meribah, he disobeyed God’s command
His sin was pardoned but had to face the consquences
Moses could survey the length and breadth of the Promised Land
God is good, in spite of our failures and unworthiness
It is good to sruvey the promises of God,
the blessings he has already granted
and hope he has set before us
Moses dies in Moab (v5-8)
Moses dies in Moab (v5-8)
So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord, and he buried him in the valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth-peor; but no one knows the place of his burial to this day. Moses was 120 years old when he died. His eye was undimmed, and his vigor unabated. And the people of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days. Then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended.
No one except God knows where he was buried
Moses was 120 years old when he died
His sight undimmed
Vigor unabated
Moses had a special ministry which God sustained him for
Normally as we get older our bodily powers wane (Ecc 12:1-8), but this is not a lack of faith
Exodus 18:13-27 - Moses had to learn to deligate responsibilities to others
The greatest commandment is to love God
our body and mind may become weak
but we remain in the hands of a loving God (Deut 33:27)
The people’s grief was significant and genuine, despite their grumbling ways
when someone dies their real worth is fully realised and appreciated
Many would be astonished if they heard the tributes paid to them
30 days of morning was also a period of respect for Moses and what he did for Israel
Moses Succeeded by Joshua (v9-12)
Moses Succeeded by Joshua (v9-12)
And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. So the people of Israel obeyed him and did as the Lord had commanded Moses. And there has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, none like him for all the signs and the wonders that the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land, and for all the mighty power and all the great deeds of terror that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.
Moses had already prepared the way for his successor
Joshua now becomes the leader. acknowledged by everyone
Joshua was prepared for leadership
“full of the spirit of wisdom” v9
A gift of God
Moses knew the Lord face to face
God says of Moses....
With him I speak mouth to mouth, clearly, and not in riddles, and he beholds the form of the Lord. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?”
“None like him for all the signs and the wonders (plagues) that the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt”
God’s act of redemption was marked by special miracles
Just as the greater act of redemption by Jesus would be
The people now with a new leader faced a great challenge
later the challege of faithfullness to the covenant
covenant of loving God, trusting him and obedience/faithfullness
