To be truly blessed is to be forgiven

○ It is not found in the things of this world

○ The good life only comes when we are forgiven

The one thing we truly need is the forgiveness of our sin

○ We were created to be with God, yet sin separates us from Him

○ If we are going to get back to what we were made for, our sin must be dealt with

So, blessed is the one who is forgiven

Psalm 32:1–2 ESV
1 Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. 2 Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.

We need to confess our sin

Psalm 32:5 ESV
5 I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah
1 John 2:1–2 ESV
1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

○ We are free to confess our sins because Jesus has taken the cost

The benefits of forgiveness

We can come to the Lord to find

Security

Psalm 32:6–7 ESV
6 Therefore let everyone who is godly offer prayer to you at a time when you may be found; surely in the rush of great waters, they shall not reach him. 7 You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance. Selah

Instruction for living as a forgiven person

Psalm 32:8–9 ESV
8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. 9 Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you.

Steadfast, immovable love of God in Christ

Psalm 32:10 ESV
10 Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the Lord.

The joy of forgiveness

Psalm 32:11 ESV
11 Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart!

○ The one true joy we have is the forgiveness of our sins by the blood of Christ

Our great hope and our one true joy is not to avoid trials and tribulations, it is not that everything will go exactly how we want it in this life - it is that we are forgiven. We belong to God through Christ!
