Romans 1:18-23 - It's Your Choice

選択その三：栄光を像と交換する

When we try to draw a simple flower, we quickly discover how many decisions go into creating even a basic picture. What kind of flower? What angle? Should we add grass, sunshine, trees, or mountains? Each choice builds upon the last, shaping what eventually appears on our page.
Our spiritual lives involve similar patterns of choices—decisions we make every single day that shape our relationship with God. In Romans 1:18-23, Paul reveals three critical choices that explain why God's wrath is revealed against the world, and ultimately, why we desperately need the gospel.
Last week we explored Romans 1:16-17, where Paul declares that the gospel is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, and that God's righteousness is revealed from faith for faith. But this raises an important question: why is God's righteousness so important to our lives? Paul answers by first showing us our unrighteousness.
The Foundation: Understanding God's Wrath
Paul writes in verse 18 that "the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men." This righteous anger of God is directed at ungodliness—a broken relationship with God—and unrighteousness—broken relationships with others.
Today we examine why God's wrath is being revealed. Next week we'll explore how it's revealed.
Choice One: Suppressing the Truth
The first reason for God's revealed wrath is found in verse 18: people "by their unrighteousness suppress the truth." Suppressing means holding something down, like putting your hand over a broken faucet to stop water from spraying everywhere.
God is showing who He is and revealing truth, but the world pushes it down and away. Suppressing truth is the first step toward idolatry. When truth gets pushed aside, we must replace it with something else—perhaps a physical idol, an idealistic idol like success or wealth, or even good things like family or work elevated to the wrong position.
But someone might ask: what about those who have never heard about Jesus? How can they suppress truth they've never encountered? Paul addresses this directly in verses 19-20. God has shown Himself to every person through creation itself. His "invisible attributes, namely his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived ever since the creation of the world in the things that have been made."
When you experience peace at a calm sunset, you glimpse the Lord's peace. When rain pours faithfully on everyone, you see God's faithfulness. When a trimmed tree sprouts new growth, you witness God's mercy bringing life to what seemed broken. As Psalm 19:1 declares, "The heavens declare the glory of God."
Because God has clearly shown Himself in creation, verse 20 concludes that no one has an excuse. We face a decision: accept or reject what God has revealed.
Choice Two: Refusing to Honor and Thank God
Verse 21 reveals the second reason: "Although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him."
This resembles a rebellious teenager living under their parents' roof, eating their food, benefiting from their generosity—yet refusing to acknowledge them or say thank you. We benefit from God's generosity every day. He provides for us, works things out in the background we don't see, comforts us when we're hurting, and strengthens us when we're scared.
We face a daily choice: honor God as God and give thanks for His blessings, or act like rebellious teenagers taking Him for granted.
The result of refusing to honor and thank God? Verse 21 says "they became futile in their thinking and their foolish hearts were darkened." Life apart from God becomes meaningless—the central message of Ecclesiastes. God must be the center of the life He's given us.
Choice Three: Trading Glory for Images
The third reason appears in verses 22-23. Those claiming to be wise "became fools" by exchanging "the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things." They became fools by chasing after idols created from things God made.
We may not name idols or create gods, but we create images in our minds. Success, relationships, money, future plans, vacations, retirement—these become things we strongly desire. We adjust our behavior trying to obtain them, thinking if we just do a little more, these things will satisfy our deep longings.
Without naming idols, we create images we worship through our actions and behavior. We face a choice: chase little gods trying to find satisfaction, or seek the God who created you, loves you, provides for you, and desires deep relationship with you.
The Gospel Connection
God's wrath is revealed for three reasons: the world rejects truth about God, refuses to honor and thank Him, and trades His glory for created images. But here's the critical foundation for understanding why we believe in Jesus Christ: you and I are naturally part of this world.
We are the ones who suppress God's truth, act like rebellious teenagers, and look for other things to serve besides the true and living God. We have no chance of reaching heaven by ourselves. Only two options exist: heaven and hell, glory and judgment.
This is why Jesus went to the cross. We were destined for God's wrath, destined for hell. But Jesus, being God in flesh, took all our unrighteousness on Himself. The wrath of God revealed against the world was poured out upon Jesus Christ. He was punished and judged in your place.
Jesus took our punishment, died, and rose from the dead. Because He took God's wrath, He offers us forgiveness for everything we've done against the Lord our whole life. Through faith in Christ, our unrighteousness is taken away and we're clothed in His righteousness—the righteousness of God revealed in the gospel.
