“Build the Wall: The Importance of Boundaries in the Christian Family”
A message on spiritual protection, purpose, and legacy
I. INTRO: Boundaries Are Built-In from the Start
I. INTRO: Boundaries Are Built-In from the Start
“Don’t touch your brother.” (backseat of the car)
“Stay on your side of the room.” (tape down the middle)
Tape lines, bedroom rules, fences around yards — these are early forms of boundaries.
🎯 Boundaries are not just practical — they are deeply biblical and spiritually protective.
Examples:
Examples:
Buying a home? You get a survey to define property lines — but you build a fence to show and protect what belongs to you.
Why do you put up a fence?
Without walls, a house is unprotected, not “free.”
Even campers like going home. Freedom requires form.
II. Boundaries Are a Blessing, Not a Curse
II. Boundaries Are a Blessing, Not a Curse
“The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places…” — Psalm 16:6
“I will walk in freedom, for I have devoted myself to your commandments.” — Psalm 119:45
Culture says: “Boundaries restrict freedom.”
But Scripture says: Boundaries create space for freedom, peace, and flourishing.
III. God Cares Deeply About Boundaries
III. God Cares Deeply About Boundaries
Nations have boundaries (Acts 17:26)
Tribes and families were assigned land with boundaries (Numbers 34)
In ancient Israel, those boundaries represented stewardship, identity, and inheritance
❗When Babylon destroyed Jerusalem, they tore down the walls, burned the temple, and desecrated what was sacred (Nehemiah 1:3).
Nehemiah’s burden was to rebuild the boundaries of God's people — spiritually and physically.
IV. Rebuild the Wall in Front of Your Own House
IV. Rebuild the Wall in Front of Your Own House
“Each family built the wall in front of their own house.” — Nehemiah 3:28
A. Personal Responsibility
A. Personal Responsibility
You don’t have to build everything — but you must build your part.
A neglected wall creates vulnerability for everyone.
Protect what is valuable, not what is
. G.K. Chesterton (Again, not evangelical, but helpful)
. G.K. Chesterton (Again, not evangelical, but helpful)
“The more I considered Christianity, the more I found that while it had established a rule and order, the chief aim of that order was to give room for good things to run wild.
B. Connected Responsibility
B. Connected Responsibility
Each family’s wall connected with the next.
Community and accountability are vital — we need godly friends whose walls touch ours.
“Show me your friends, and I’ll show you your future.”
C. Not popular: Opposition Will Come
C. Not popular: Opposition Will Come
“They all plotted to fight against Jerusalem and stir up trouble…” — Nehemiah 4:8
“Each labored with one hand and held a weapon in the other.” — Nehemiah 4:17
The work is hard, the enemy mocks, but we build and battle at the same time.
V. What Do Boundaries Protect?
V. What Do Boundaries Protect?
“Guard your heart, for from it flow the springs of life.” — Proverbs 4:23
“Abstain from all appearance of evil.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:22
🛡️ Boundaries…
🛡️ Boundaries…
1. Protect Your Time
1. Protect Your Time
“Remember the Sabbath…” — Exodus 20:8
Time is holy — guard it from being overrun by distractions.
Sabbath is God’s built-in boundary against burnout.
2. Protect Your Innocence
2. Protect Your Innocence
“Whatever is pure… think on these things.” — Philippians 4:8
Hearts, eyes, and minds — especially in children — need protection from corrupt influences.
3. Protect Your Worship
3. Protect Your Worship
“Seek first the kingdom of God…” — Matthew 6:33
Keep God first — don’t let busyness, entertainment, or even good things crowd out the ultimate thing.
4. Protect Your Relationships
4. Protect Your Relationships
“Do not be deceived: bad company corrupts good morals.” — 1 Cor. 15:33
Your friends affect your wall. Who’s building beside you?
VI. Application: Build Your Wall
VI. Application: Build Your Wall
“The God of heaven will make us prosper, and we his servants will arise and build.” — Nehemiah 2:20
Parents: Build and protect the wall in front of your home.
Children: Learn how to guard your heart with God’s help.
Families: Stay connected to others who are building in faith and obedience.
🏁 CONCLUSION: Boundaries Protect What Is Sacred
🏁 CONCLUSION: Boundaries Protect What Is Sacred
Boundaries keep danger out, and God’s design in.
They are not about fear — they’re about faithfulness.
