Romans 8:31-39, My Translation

Verses 31-32

31 Τί οὖν ἐροῦμεν πρὸς ταῦτα; εἰ ὁ θεὸς ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν, τίς καθʼ ἡμῶν; 32 ὅς γε τοῦ ἰδίου υἱοῦ οὐκ ἐφείσατο, ἀλλὰ ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν πάντων παρέδωκεν αὐτόν, πῶς οὐχὶ καὶ σὺν αὐτῷ τὰ πάντα ἡμῖν χαρίσεται;

31 What then shall we say regarding these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32 Indeed, if God did not spare[1] His own Son from suffering, but delivered Him over to death on behalf of us all, how will He not also graciously give us all things along with Him?
[1] Same Greek word used of Abraham, who did not “spare” or “withhold” his beloved son, Isaac (Gen 22:12, 16).
NOTES:
These things (31): God’s sovereign plan of salvation; the Spirit’s work of intercession for us; hope of glory/new creation/full adoption
If God is for us, who is against us? See Num. 14:9; 2 Kgs. 6:16; Ps. 118:6; 1 John 4:4
Connection with Isaiah 50:8-9; these are the words of the suffering Servant of the LORD, now applied to believers because of our union with Him.
So do not fear. God is for us and He is with us (Psalm 23:4; 56:9)
Many can be against us and even kill us, but they cannot separate us from God and His love
God did not spare His own Son
John 3:16
Genesis 22:12, 16
How will He not also graciously give us all things along with Him?
If God met our greatest need, certainly He can and will meet every other need; if He loves us enough to sacrifice His Son, He loves us enough to do whatever else we need Him to do.

The opposition seems like a lot sometimes—the world, the flesh, Satan, secularists, false religions, our enemies—but God loves us and is sovereign. The Lord is our Shepherd, Maker of heaven and earth!

Verses 33-34

33 Who will bring charges against those whom God has chosen? The one who declares righteous is God. 34 Who is the one who condemns? The one who died is Christ, and more than that He was raised, and He is at the right hand of God, and He is appealing on our behalf.
NOTES:

We can be sure that no one will be able to condemn us on the last day because of three facts listed here in increasing significance. First, Christ died for us. Second, and even more important, he was raised. And finally, he now intercedes for us.

Verses 35-37

35 Who will separate us from Christ’s love? Will affliction, or distress, or persecution, or starvation, or destitution, or danger, or sword? 36 Just as it is written, “Because of you we are being put to death the whole day, we are reckoned as sheep of slaughter.”[2] 37 But in all these things we are overwhelmingly victorious through the one who loved us.
[2] Psalm 44:22 (Context of suffering despite faithfulness to the LORD)
NOTES:
We sometimes don’t feel His love for us, especially when we’re undergoing His discipline and the difficult circumstances He allows in our lives. But we must not let our feelings govern our thinking, because the reality is that nothing can truly separate us from His love.
When we suffer despite our faithfulness to the Lord (as in the context of Psalm 44:22), we may be tempted to doubt His love. But He does love us, and His love for us guarantees our ultimate victory.

Verses 38-39

38 For I am confident that neither death nor life, neither angels nor rulers, neither present things nor future things, nor powers, 39 neither what is above nor what is below, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
NOTES:
God’s love is in Christ Jesus our Lord, so that if by faith we have Christ, in Him we have God’s love.
I don’t think I spend enough time meditating on the greatness of God’s love for me; if I really trust His love (1 John 4:16), I should be ready and willing to endure any suffering and difficulty in this life, knowing that nothing can separate me from His love.
