1 Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. 2 We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. 3 Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God? 4 Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? 5 But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.
6 He will render to each one according to his works: 7 to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; 8 but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. 9 There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, 10 but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. 11 For God shows no partiality.

To understand this text, we have to go back and read ch.1:18-32
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.
That’s a lot of sin. But we’re not like them, right?

This is an attack against the belief that outward appearance, abstinence from gross sin, and good deeds make you safe from judgement.
Chapter 2, on the heels of chapter 1, is meant to counteract the natural feeling of self-righteousness that crept into the minds of the Roman church.
To pass judgment is to condemn a person. Do we do that today? With who?
God is a just judge. All sin will be held accountable.
When we pass judgement, Paul says we are guilty of the same thing.
Paul here is working up to the points he will make in chapter 3. Just as Chapter 1 is foundational for chapter 2, chapter 2 is for chapter 3.
Our judgement makes us just as much a sinner as the person we judge.
We are guilty, but we think that we will not be held accountable for our sins because they are not as heinous, or that God will just not judge at all.
2 Peter 3:9 “9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”
The reason God does not just smite people down the second they sin is not because He is not just, but because He is patient, and wants sinners to repent.
Paul makes it crystal clear that sin is sin, no matter how it looks. See the list of sins at the end of Chapter 1
So, what does that mean for us? Does Paul just leave us hanging like that?

Paul describes 2 groups of people here: The Redeemed, and the Unredeemed.
This passage does not teach that we are saved by works.
Ephesians 2:8–9 “8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
This passage does show that the Redeemed have a pattern of striving for the right things.
The Unredeemed
Verses 8-11 describe those who are not redeemed. Those who are going their own way. Their lives are characterized by this pattern.
God does not play favorites. He is a fair, just judge, and because He is holy, sin must be judged.

1 “Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?
We who stand on Biblical truth are called to a gracious attitude towards people.
This does not mean we don’t lovingly address sin
3 Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him, 4 and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.”
What Jesus teaches, in Romans, Matthew, and Luke, is that we must have the right heart.
9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Do not think that our sin is worse than someone else's. We are called to lovingly confront sin in order that we may lead sinners to Christ.
