John 8:1-12,
Start-
Scripture that we are studying today is: John 8 1-12
Why did Jesus come to Earth? -
Die for the sins of those who believe in Him
First I think its important for us to see how God expects us to live.
You shall have no other gods before me ( anything you put at the center of your life other then God)
2. you shall not make Idols (worshiping of anything other then God himself)
3. Shall not take the Lords name in vain (common saying- Jesus Christ)
4. Keep Sundays a holy day (Attend church, worship and praise God on Sundays, remember God as your Lord)
5. Honor your Father and mother (respect, listen, talking back)
6. You shall not Murder ( Christ confirms that this is not just a physical murder but murder of the heart. i.e hate)
7. You shall not commit adultery( cheating on our wifes/husbands is also thinking about others in any sexual way)
8. You shall not steal
9. You shall not lie
10. You shall not covet ( be jealous of what God has given others and not us)
Do you guys think anyone can live a perfect life following these commandments?
- no I know that no one is capable of doing this.
2. So now looking at these 10 commandments - What are some things that we do on a daily basis that are considered sin or you might think is sin?
-talking back to parents
-lying
-stealing
-cheating
-being disobedient
-bullying
-hitting others
-taking things that aren't theirs
-not sharing
-being unkind to others
Do you guys think we could sit here and rank these sins? Potentially come up with which one is the worst.
Okay now close your eyes. Everyone close your eyes.
Raise your hand if you are guilty of any of these sins we just discussed.
Okay so for everyone sitting in this room, while we read this next part of scripture I want you to picture yourself in this womans shoes.
I want you to see how Christ would respond to you if this happened right now.
Read:
John 8 2-6:
2 Early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people were coming to Him; and He sat down and began to teach them. 3 The scribes and the Pharisees *brought a woman caught in adultery, and having set her in the center of the court, 4 they *said to Him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in adultery, in the very act. 5 Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?” 6 They were saying this, testing Him, so that they might have evidence to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground.
Like this woman, as a sinner you are separated from God.
For those of you who do not call Christ Lord, who have are not repented of your sin and choosen to follow Him no matter what it costs. You are actively in the wrong standing with God.
James 2:10 “For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.”
This scripture shows us that in the eyes of the Lord it does not matter the sin you have committed. If you stand here today with any sin you are separated from God.
Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”
The Pharisees and Scribes are trying to trick Jesus.
Adultery = Death in the Law of Moses.
They're hoping that Jesus will either stone her, ruining His merciful reputation and break Roman Law
Or He will refuse and prove that he does not honor the Law of Moses
During this time it was perfectly normal for this style of execution.
This was normal BUT
Let's see what Jesus’ response is.
John 8 7-12:
7 But when they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.”8 Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9 When they heard it, they began to go out one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the center of the court. 10 Straightening up, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “I do not condemn you, either. Go, and from now on sin no more.” 12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”
What did Jesus do? What was his response?
Forgiveness
Grace
Love
Redemption
Jesus demonstrated exactly what he was sent to earth to do.
We know that the payment for sin is Death and those who sin have stored wrath for themselves
Romans 2:5 “But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,”
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, BUT the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
He extended forgiveness, grace, love and redemption to someone who did not deserve it.
In the same way that he treating this woman. He does this for all of us sitting here.
Now why would God do this for us? Why would the most powerful being in all existence do this for people who have sinned against Him?
Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Even though God knew we would live in disobedience.
Even though God knew that we would choose the world over Him, He sent his son to the Cross to pay for our judgement.
Having purchased us with His blood Christ has given us the opportunity to be redeemed.
2 Corinthians 5:21 “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
This is the entire Gospel message right here.
God made Jesus Sin on our behalf. The only person to ever live and follow the 10 commandments. The only person who deserved to enter the Kingdom was sacrificed for us.
Having sent Christ to the cross, bearing all sin during that time and perfectly pouring his wrath on his Son.
He is able to look at us sinners and see his perfect Son. The perfect payment for our sins and the only way to the Kingdom.
John 3 17
17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
If you know that you are guilty of these sins and have acknowledged that you are separated from God there is only one thing you can do.
Know that Christs Mercy and Grace conquers all sin and the only thing you do is put 100% of your faith in Him, repent and apologize to God for what you have done. Turn from your sin and choose to live a life that is following Christ.
Trusting that his sacrifice was payment for you.
Now close your eyes again. By show of hands:
Who here is feeling God calling to them?
Who here has seen that their sin has separated them from God?
You can open your eyes now.
For those of you who raised your hands who wants to follow Christ as Lord?
Who has recognized that they need a savior?
