Recap -
Last Wednesday we went through the battle of David & Goliath. That is how we refer to it and while it is very true that David was the human that took down Goliath, we all know as David knew that battle was between the Lord & the Israelite enemies. David knew God was with him from the moment he raised his hand and said I’ll do it!
Goliath didn’t stand a chance and God used a shepherd boy as he was widely know, to take out the giant. It is a wonderful example of how God allows us to come up against giants in our life, and know that we already have the victory in the Lord before we ever set foot on the battlefield. We have to go into our battles knowing that God has us. David understood the assignment, and more importantly David trusted God!
The Spirit led me to heavily focus on the weight that we carry when we don’t trust God, when we feel like it’s all on us. Goliath carried around his own massive frame, and covered that with hundreds of pounds of armor WEIGHT. David on the other hand told Saul, I can’t wear your armor. David was saying what we all proclaim today, WITH GOD FOR ME, WHO CAN STAND AGAINST ME?
In his victory, David was coming closer to Saul on a different level now. The level he was coming in at was going to get him noticed for all the wrong reasons. As we step into chapter 18 tonight, I want to challenge you all as I will challenge myself, to think about two things...
What are we pursuing in our lives?
Where is our level of trust in the Lord?
Chapter 18 - Jonathan & David’s Friendship
As chapter 18 opens we see that Jonathan & David have become very good friends, the Bible says Jonathan became one in spirit with David and loved him as he loved himself. That sounds like something we are told to do RIGHT!?
The Bible also tells us Saul kept David with him and did not allow him to return home. Saul was looking at the advantages David could provide, remember at this point Saul has already realized that the Lord is with David, and Saul also knows the Spirit of God has left him.
Jonathan and David’s friendship is immediate. And they make a covenant with each other as Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing as well as his armor and weapons. Lets spend one minute right here....
Jonathan is the son of Saul, he is also next in line for the throne Amen? But the Bible says Jonathan took off his robe, a royal garment that carried weight in these times. It was a symbol of authority, position and INHERITANCE. And Jonathan took it off AND GAVE IT TO DAVID.
Y’all ever had anybody give you something that cost them what appears to be everything? You see Jonathan and David had a relationship that was rooted in commitment to God, not just to each other. That is what we will see play a huge roll in the next couple of chapters.
Jonathan could already see God’s hand on David’s life. Him handing over his garments was a foreshadowing of what was to come. As crazy as this may sound in this moment, Jonathan knew what he didn’t know.
And this actually just strengthened the friendship between David & Jonathan. Jonathan was stepping back to celebrate what God was doing in his friend’s life. Now that is true friendship.
Pray for your friend to get that promotion, pray for your friend to get that raise pray for your friend to do better..… y’all might not be ready for this next part,
PRAY FOR THAT EVEN IF YOU ARE UP FOR THAT PROMOTION, PRAY FOR THAT EVEN IF YOU HAVEN’T HAD A RAISE IN A DECADE, PRAY FOR THAT EVEN IF YOU ARE IN A ROUGH SEASON OF LIFE.
DO NOT LET THINGS OF THIS WORLD STOP YOU FROM CELEBRATING WHAT GOD IS DOING IN HIS CREATION!
Now that’s enough for all of us to go home and pray on from now till Sunday Amen? But it’s to early so luckily we see very soon what the exact opposite of Jonathan’s thought process is come out in Saul. Who would have thought, we are still on the shortcomings of Saul right? But here we are, Chapter 18 starting in verse 6...
1 Samuel 18:6–9 NASB 2020
Now it happened as they were coming, when David returned from killing the Philistine, that the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with joy and with other musical instruments. The women sang as they played, and said, “Saul has slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands.” Then Saul became very angry, for this lyric displeased him; and he said, “They have given David credit for ten thousands, but to me they have given credit for only thousands! Now what more can he have but the kingdom?” And Saul eyed David with suspicion from that day on.
See what I mean, YOU CAN LOVE AND CELEBRATE PEOPLE, OR YOU CAN BE JEALOUS AND BURN WITH ENVY OF PEOPLE!
How quickly Saul forgets, the only reason he is holding onto the people of Israel is because of the military victories the Lord ushered him through. He was recognized for his victory in battle but when David comes on the scene, someone who FOUGHT FOR ISRAEL UNDER SAUL, Saul is angry because someone is taking his spotlight.
He’s like a kid saying well my younger brother is my parents favorite. Newsflash and all the parent’s say Amen if I’m right, we love you all equally. It’s just sometimes we can like one or the other a little more. And if you have more than one kid that can change like the leaves are outside right now RIGHT?
I’m just serious.
But back to it, Saul is angry because David is winning the people, and Saul has more than one emotion in play, envy is heavy, but Saul is also afraid. Fearful like he has been so many times before that the Israelites will come against him. We see that when Saul says “What more can he get but the kingdom”.
Saul isn’t concerned with God’s Kingdom, his worry is fixated in losing what he sees as his kingdom. And that is a sermon all to itself AMEN?
Saul’s anger turns violent when an evil spirt FROM GOD, rushes upon Saul. And like before David is playing the harp for Saul. And Saul takes up a spear and the Bible says hurls it towards David with a thought to PIN HIM TO THE WALL. He wanted David dead.
But as we all know, the Lord is with David so he escapes twice. I want you all to hold on to the fact here that Saul just tried to take David’s life. It will be important for many reasons....
Verse 12 is where all the truth of Saul’s fear comes out in the Word...
1 Samuel 18:12 NASB 2020
Now Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with him but had left Saul.
I get Saul’s fear here. I do not want to imagine being without the Holy Spirit being in me. I won’t imagine it for two reasons, first it’s to painful to think about but even more so, BECASUE I, LIKE YOU, HAVE BEEN SEALED WITH THE SPIRIT AMEN!
David saw what this could do, and I have to think this situation came flooding to his mind after he sinned against God with Bathsheba. The pain and fear David witnessed in Saul was why he prayed as recorded in Psalm 51...
Psalm 51:11 NASB 2020
Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
So now Saul is scared and removes David from his presence, and places him as commander over 1000 men. This wasn’t promoting David, this was removing the threat. He was sending David to battle.
Did y’all know God will use anything or anyone HE chooses to accomplish HIS PLAN? EVEN YOUR ENEMY!
David always returned, and scripture says in verse 14 DAVID WAS SUCCESSFUL IN ALL HIS WAYS FOR THE LORD WAS WITH HIM!
This success just fueled Saul’s fear, but all of Israel LOVED David, Judah loved David, Jonathan loved David, so how could Saul PIN HIM TO THE WALL WITH A SPEAR NOW?
Now Saul has to get rid of David some other way. Now keep in mind all of this is after Saul tried to kill David...
Saul says you can marry my daughter Merab if you will be a valiant man FOR ME and fight the Lord’s battles, Saul’s words had that message but the message in Saul’s mind was...
I can’t kill him or the people will turn against me, so I’ll just send him out to battle and let the Philistines do it for me.
Now we will get there eventually but sounds a lot like what David did to Uriah doesn’t it? We can’t continue the pattern of things we have been a victim to in our life, we have to strive to do better. But that’s a study for 2027 when we make it to 2nd Samuel. Amen?!
Let’s keep going on tonight though....
The next thing we see is David’s humility. Humble to the core here. David has taken down Goliath, killed his 10’s of thousands of enemies, and fought several battles and returned victorious. DAVID IS THE MAN! ALL OF ISRAEL LOVES HIM, but still in this moment David says
1 Samuel 18:18 NASB 2020
But David said to Saul, “Who am I, and who is my family, or my father’s family in Israel, that I should be the king’s son-in-law?”
Saul is proud and arrogant, and David is victorious and humble. The key is knowing where your VICTORY COMES FROM. When you step back and say look what I have done, you are missing the mark. When you stay HUMBLE and know what the LORD HAS DONE. You don’t have to say anything, the anointing says it all! The Victory you have in the LORD is all the message you need!
So Merab was given to to another man, which brings us to Michael, another of Saul’s daughters. The Bible also tells us she already loved David, like all of Israel and all of Judah, and Jonathan.
Saul hears this and it made him happy because now Michael would be the trap for David. Saul is persistent about his wrong doing isn’t he?
Same Philistine kill squad on his mind Saul tells David marry my daughter Michael. He also has his servants tell David how much the King delight’s in him. Sounds like an evil spirit for sure, trying to trick someone by stroking their ego. He forgot David has humility so again David questions his status as a poor man to marry the King’s daughter.
Saul has a real plan now, he tells his servants to go back to David and tell him that the only dowry required would be the foreskins of 100 Philistines. David knew he could defeat any enemy so he went into battle and brought Saul back 200 instead of 100 so that he may become his son -in -law.
Saul honored what he said and Michael became David’s wife. When Saul saw that she loved him along with every one else and the big FACTOR, THAT THE LORD WAS WITH DAVID, SAUL WAS EVEN MORE AFRAID. AND THE BIBLE SAYS
SAUL WAS DAVID’S ENEMY CONTINUALLY.
Chapter 18 closes with David being successful as often as he went out against the Philistines. More successful than any of Saul’s other men.
And his name was held in HIGH ESTEEM.
God will take every trick of the devil and move it for our success, if we remain in HIM. That is why we DO NOT Give the devil a foothold Amen!
Will yall pray with me tonight?
