Nature of a promise
How Many Promises in the Bible?
“The Holy Scriptures contain a grand total of 8,810 promises.
• There are 7,487 promises from God to man (about 85 percent of all the Bible’s promises).
• There are 991 instances of one person making a promise to another person.
• There are 290 promises from man to God.
• There are promises made by the angels, most of them found in Luke.
• There are nine promises made by “that old liar, the devil.” (For example, his promise to give Jesus all the kingdoms of the world if he would fall down and worship him.)
• Two promises are made by an evil spirit.
• Two are made by God the Father to God the Son.
one book of the Bible contains no promise at all—Titus.
Ephesians has only six promises.
On the other hand, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel have over 1,000 promises each.
6 times Jesus made statements that have the words “I Will...”
We find the promise of the holy spirit in John 14:16
John 14:16 NASB95
“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;
Jesus is speaking to his disciples about why He must go away
and reassuring them that even though He will be gone physically,
they will not be alone.
The holy spirit will come and be a counselor to them.
Today, Christians receive the holy spirit at the moment they accept Christ in their hearts.
Ephesians 1:13–14 NASB95
In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.
This spirit will convict us of sin.
It will guide us at the crossroads of life.
The holy spirit comforts,
gives understanding, inspires, and empowers us.
Christ did not return to the Father and leave us as orphans groping in darkness.
He returned to the Father and gifted us the holy spirit
so we may continue the work of building the kingdom of God

As a small church we are not less than what God says we are just because we compare ourselves to others
80-90% of church will never be larger than 250 people
Over 90% all churches are under 200, over 80% are under 100
Ikea vs Starbucks
Over half of the Christians in the entire world attend small churches
Big church- small church testimony
The pastor knows my name
I can be involved

Renewal of Spiritual gifts and emphasis on Baptism in the Holy Spirit and Speaking in tongues
Let’s look at the promise:
The baptism is a religious experience that gives you power
Jesus baptism- Mark 1:7-8
Mark 1:7–8 NASB95
And he was preaching, and saying, “After me One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to stoop down and untie the thong of His sandals. “I baptized you with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
During Jesus last time on earth He talked a great deal about the Holy ghost who would come after him to John 14 &16
The Holy Spirit Will:
Stand by Us
Guide Us
Comfort Us
Give Us power to carry out His mission
John 14:16–18 NASB95
“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
John 14:26 NASB95
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
John 16:7–8 NASB95
“But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. “And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;
John 16:13–15 NASB95
“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. “He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. “All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.
Command to wait to begin the mission till you receive power
(just as Jesus didn’t begin his public ministry until He received power)
Acts 1:4–8 NASB95
Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
Day of Pentecost
Acts 2:2–4 NASB95
And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.
The same men who had hidden at the crucifixion went on to heal the sick,
cast out demons,
declare the gospel boldly
and stand up against the hostile world with their message
Power Tools
Speaking in tongues
(4 out of 5 depictions of baptism in the holy spirit depict speaking in tongues, and the 5th it could be implied)
Pentecost
Saul’s Conversion
1 Corinthians 14:18 NASB95
I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all;
Cornelius Household
Acts 10:44–47 NASB95
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message. All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter answered, “Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?”
Ephesus Converts
Acts 19:1–6 NASB95
It happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus, and found some disciples. He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said to him, “No, we have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” And they said, “Into John’s baptism.” Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying.
Samerian Revival
Acts 8:5–13 NASB95
Philip went down to the city of Samaria and began proclaiming Christ to them. The crowds with one accord were giving attention to what was said by Philip, as they heard and saw the signs which he was performing. For in the case of many who had unclean spirits, they were coming out of them shouting with a loud voice; and many who had been paralyzed and lame were healed. So there was much rejoicing in that city. Now there was a man named Simon, who formerly was practicing magic in the city and astonishing the people of Samaria, claiming to be someone great; and they all, from smallest to greatest, were giving attention to him, saying, “This man is what is called the Great Power of God.” And they were giving him attention because he had for a long time astonished them with his magic arts. But when they believed Philip preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were being baptized, men and women alike. Even Simon himself believed; and after being baptized, he continued on with Philip, and as he observed signs and great miracles taking place, he was constantly amazed.
Acts 8:14–24 NASB95
Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. For He had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they began laying their hands on them, and they were receiving the Holy Spirit. Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was bestowed through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money, saying, “Give this authority to me as well, so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! “You have no part or portion in this matter, for your heart is not right before God. “Therefore repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray the Lord that, if possible, the intention of your heart may be forgiven you. “For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and in the bondage of iniquity.” But Simon answered and said, “Pray to the Lord for me yourselves, so that nothing of what you have said may come upon me.”
What does this mean for us today?
10 special gifts of the Holy Spirit
Power

Transformation
No longer hounded by the mind of the Flesh, but have spiritual values
Ephesians 2:3-6 describes this transformation
Ephesians 2:3–6 NASB95
Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
New Life
2 Corinthians 3:5–6 NASB95
Not that we are adequate in ourselves to consider anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God, who also made us adequate as servants of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
Truth
John 16:13 NASB95
“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
Access to the Father
Ephesians 2:18 NASB95
for through Him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father.
Hope and joy
Romans 15:13 NASB95
Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Liberty

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
Boldness
After the healing at the gate beautiful
Acts 4:27–31 NASB95
“For truly in this city there were gathered together against Your holy servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose predestined to occur. “And now, Lord, take note of their threats, and grant that Your bond-servants may speak Your word with all confidence, while You extend Your hand to heal, and signs and wonders take place through the name of Your holy servant Jesus.” And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness.

Worship
While we are singing, if you are seeking initial babpism
or a refilling of the Holy Spirit
Come to the altar area up front
Start asking Jesus to fill you while we sings
Tips:
Begin with Faith, not doubt
Anticipate the Holy Spirit to move
This is an opportunity, not a requirement
You may or may not have an incredible experience
Surrender is key
Jesus is the one who baptises,
you just need to ask Jesus to reveal that part of himself to you
Allow the Holy Spirit to talk for you
Remember, some people keep seeking the baptism for years
God still loves you
I encourage you to keep praying for it
Those seeking the Holy Spirit, raise your hands in surrender right now
in your own words, just start praising God
Don’t wory about being repetitive
just don’t be quiet
When the time comes, have those who already have the infilling come behind those
