He is Coming
Week 1
Genesis 3
Anticipation of Christmas
Anticipation of the Messiah
Anticipation of the 2nd coming of Jesus
Genesis 3:1–6 ESV
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.

3 Reasons We Anticipate Jesus

1. God’s Pursuit

ILL- dogs escape- they smell freedom and take off. They don't realize all the problems with freedom. I pursue after them because they do not have the brains to know it is safer in the backyard.
God created and came to us after we sin.
Genesis 3:8–9 ESV
8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”
He has always and continues to pursue us.
Man hides from God- because of sin
darkness hides from the light.
God comes to garden and approaches man while they are hiding in their shame.
leaving 99 going after the 1.
Matthew 18:12–13 ESV
12 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? 13 And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray.
Ezekiel 34:11 ESV
11 “For thus says the Lord God: Behold, I, I myself will search for my sheep and will seek them out.
The Bible is a story of God pursuing man- not man looking for God
Abraham- God called him to go to find Promised Land
Moses- God found him in the wilderness
David- He was tending sheep.
Samuel- He was taking care of an old man.
The manger is another chapter in God pursuing man.
Galatians 4:4 ESV
4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law,
1 John 4:9 ESV
9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.
ILL- Wisemen did not find a people looking for Jesus. They missed it.
We anticipate Jesus because God is always in pursuit of us.

2. Man’s Need (6-7)

Genesis 3:6–7 ESV
6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
Command disobeyed
Genesis 3:3 ESV
3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ”
God provided boundaries for man.
Man had to decide if he would live God's path or his own path.
Temptation- questioned the integrity of God.
God created man different than all of creation. We were created in the image of God. Part of this image consists of the ability to have relationship.
God gave us a choice because love must be a choice.
When we begin to desire the lure of the wrong choice begins a battle.
James 1:14 ESV
14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.
Consequence (3b)
Sin comes with consequences
Romans 6:23a ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
James 1:15 ESV
15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
Physical and Spiritual death- an eternal separation from God.
Man tried to hide from God- cover the sin themselves.
God

3. God’s Provision (15)

God provided the sacrifice of animal to clothe Adam and Eve.
God provided a way to overcome sin. Provided a way from the beginning.
Genesis 3:15 ESV
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
The battle of good and evil would find victory through the seed of woman.
Reason for Virgin Birth
Galatians 4:4 ESV
4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law,
Luke 1:34–35 ESV
34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” 35 And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.
Romans 5:12–17 ESV
12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— 13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. 15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. 16 And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. 17 For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 15:45–49 ESV
45 Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. 46 But it is not the spiritual that is first but the natural, and then the spiritual. 47 The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from heaven. 48 As was the man of dust, so also are those who are of the dust, and as is the man of heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. 49 Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven.
The Cross
Satan saw the cross as the way for his own victory. Kill Jesus and ruin God's plans.
He entered Judas to have Jesus condemned.
The cross was God's plan all along.
He died in our place.
He paid the price for our sin.
He restored the relationship between us and God.
The curtain was torn from top to bottom in Temple.
Colossians 2:13–15 ESV
13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
He proved his power in The Resurrection
He conquered death.
1 Corinthians 15:54–57 ESV
54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” 55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
God Provides Grace
Verse 7- following their sin.- they knew they were naked.
Tried to cover themselves. They were suddenly self conscience. They are trying to cover their sin and shame.
This was not good enough- when God starts walking through the garden they hide from him. Their covering was not good enough.
Genesis 3:21 ESV
21 And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.
Only God could provide what they needed.
God takes the initiative to take away the shame.
These coverings are made of skin. - a sacrifice had been made.
First death witnessed by Adam and Eve.
God killed an innocent animal to cover their shame.
They saw the cost of their sin. Yes, ultimately their own sin but also death of sacrifice.
God is setting the stage for the Passover and eventually Jesus.
Sin separates us from God.
Blood has to be shed.
O. T. - Sacrifice is a covering.
N.T. - Jesus takes it a step farther. He cleanses us- removes the guilt completely.
Prophesied- Isaiah 1:18
Isaiah 1:18 ESV
18 “Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.
1 John 1:7–9 ESV
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Jesus died for us. = The final sacrifice for our sins.
Victory over Satan
Romans 16:20 ESV
20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
Hebrews 2:14 ESV
14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,
CONCLUSION
Death entered through Adam.
Death ends through Jesus.
