“Why We Baptize in Jesus’ Name”

I. Introduction – Mat 28:19

Main Thought:

Baptism in Jesus’ name is not a ritual—it’s the means by which we apply the Gospel message to our life—The death, burial, and resurrection.

How do we baptize?

(Mark 1:10, KJV 1900) “And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:

Definition: Immerse—Submerse--To Dip in or under water—Sink—Plunge.

Key Verse:

(Matthew 28:18–19, KJV 1900)

“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Explanation:

• The phrase “in the name of” means “in the power or authority of.”

o Salvation rests on your foundation

• Other Commission statements

o (Mark 16:16–17, NKJV)

“He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;

 (Luke 24:46–47, NKJV)

“Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

• How can we baptized in the name of Jesus? It reveals the fullness of the Godhead

o “For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:” (Colossians 2:9–10, KJV 1900)

o Jesus Name encompasses the fullness of Gods power

The Apostles were tasked to keep this doctrine without fail for the sake of the kingdom!

Transition:

What is the pattern of the New Testament church to this command—from Jews to Samaritans to Gentiles.

II. To the Jews – Acts 2

Scripture: Acts 2:36–39

After preaching the Gospel, Peter tells men how to apply it when they asked “What shall we do?”

Teaching Points:

How to apply the Gospel.

1. The command: “Repent, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins” (v. 38).

1. “Must be born again (John 3:5)

2. 12 witnesses – No apostles opposed him

3. 3,000 witnesses

Baptism in Jesus’ name was how Jewish believers applied the Gospel.

Transition:

But God’s plan wasn’t just for the Jews—He extended His name to others.

III. To the Samaritans – Acts 8

Scripture: Acts 8:12–16

Teaching Points:

1. Philip preached the kingdom and the name of Jesus Christ (v. 12).

1. How did he preach the name of Jesus Christ?

2. Those who believed were baptized in Jesus’ name (v. 16).

1. v. 12 simply says baptism as if we should already know how they were baptized without qualification.

3. Philip, an evangelist, confirmed Peters message and Jesus words.

Both Jew and Samaritan had to apply the Gospel the same way.

Transition:

Then God made it unmistakable by pouring out His Spirit on the Gentiles.

IV. To the Gentiles – Acts 10

Scripture: Acts 10:44–48

Teaching Points:

1. Peter asked, “Can any forbid water…?” (v. 47).

2. He commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord (Jesus).

Explanation:

• Baptism is a command, not an option.

Transition:

Even the Apostle Paul, who once persecuted believers, obeyed this same command.

Acts 19:1 – Johns disciples

(Acts 19:5, KJV 1900)

“When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

V. Paul’s Baptism and Teaching on the Name – Acts 9 & 22

Scripture: Acts 9:18; 22:12–16

Teaching Points:

1. Ananias said, “Arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord” (22:16).

2. Paul later taught that baptism identified us with Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection (Rom. 6:3–6).

1. (Romans 6:4–6, KJV 1900)

“Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

Explanation:

• Paul recognized that salvation and remission of sins are found only in Jesus’ name.

1 Cor. 1:13–15 Is Christ divided?

Transition:

From Jew to Gentile, from Peter to Paul, the pattern was consistent: baptism was always in the name of Jesus.

VI. Conclusion – The Only Saving Name

Scripture: (Acts 4:12, KJV 1900)

“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Closing Thought:

From Jerusalem to Samaria to the Gentiles, the apostles never baptized any other way. The power, remission, and the promise are all in one name—the name of Jesus.
