Hosea 2:1–23 NASB 2020
Say to your brothers, “Ammi,” and to your sisters, “Ruhamah.” “Dispute with your mother, dispute, Because she is not my wife, and I am not her husband; But she must remove her infidelity from her face And her adultery from between her breasts, Otherwise, I will strip her naked And expose her as on the day she was born. I will also make her like a wilderness, Make her like desert land, And put her to death with thirst. “Also, I will take no pity on her children, Because they are children of infidelity. “For their mother has committed prostitution; She who conceived them has acted shamefully. For she said, ‘I will go after my lovers, Who give me my bread and my water, My wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.’ “Therefore, behold, I will obstruct her way with thorns, And I will build a stone wall against her so that she cannot find her paths. “And she will pursue her lovers, but she will not reach them; And she will seek them, but will not find them. Then she will say, ‘I will go back to my first husband, Because it was better for me then than now!’ “Yet she does not know that it was I myself who gave her the grain, the new wine, and the oil, And lavished on her silver and gold, Which they used for Baal. “Therefore, I will take back My grain at harvest time And My new wine in its season. I will also take away My wool and My flax That I gave to cover her nakedness. “So now I will uncover her lewdness Before the eyes of her lovers, And no one will rescue her from My hand. “I will also put an end to all her joy, Her feasts, her new moons, her Sabbaths, And all her festivals. “And I will destroy her vines and fig trees, Of which she said, ‘They are my wages for prostitution Which my lovers have given me.’ And I will turn them into a forest, And the animals of the field will devour them. “I will punish her for the days of the Baals When she used to offer sacrifices to them And adorn herself with her nose ring and jewelry, And follow her lovers, so that she forgot Me,” declares the Lord. “Therefore, behold, I am going to persuade her, Bring her into the wilderness, And speak kindly to her. “Then I will give her her vineyards from there, And the Valley of Achor as a door of hope. And she will respond there as in the days of her youth, As in the day when she went up from the land of Egypt. “And it will come about on that day,” declares the Lord, “That you will call Me my husband And no longer call Me my Baal. “For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, So that they will no longer be mentioned by their names. “On that day I will also make a covenant for them With the animals of the field, The birds of the sky, And the crawling things of the ground. And I will eliminate the bow, the sword, and war from the land, And will let them lie down in safety. “I will betroth you to Me forever; Yes, I will betroth you to Me in righteousness and in justice, In favor and in compassion, And I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness. Then you will know the Lord. “And it will come about on that day that I will respond,” declares the Lord. “I will respond to the heavens, and they will respond to the earth, And the earth will respond to the grain, to the new wine, and to the oil, And they will respond to Jezreel. “I will sow her for Myself in the land. I will also have compassion on her who had not obtained compassion, And I will say to those who were not My people, ‘You are My people!’ And they will say, ‘You are my God!’ ”

Why Does YHWH Shed His Wrath on Us ????
Revelation From God

Author

According to Hos1:1 the author of this prophecy was Hosea, son of Beeri. But several commentators have attributed some of the material in the book to later editorial activity. According to these scholars, the present form of the book is the product of an evolutionary process whereby original material by Hosea was reworked and supplemented (cf., e.g., William Rainey Harper, A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on Amos and Hosea, pp. clix-clxii; Hans Walter Wolff, Hosea, pp. xxix-xxxii). In particular, references to Judah and parallels to the language and theology of Deuteronomy have been offered as examples of redactional additions. However, it is unnecessary to deny the Judean passages to Hosea. Though his main target was the Northern Kingdom, his message encompassed the entire people of God. Like Hosea, other eighth-century b.c. prophets spoke to both kingdoms in the course of their prophecies (for a detailed discussion of the Judean passages in Hosea, see R.K. Harrison, Introduction to the Old Testament. Grand Rapids: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., 1969, pp. 868-70). Hosea’s parallels to Deuteronomy cannot be labeled later additions if Deuteronomy is correctly dated before, not after, Hosea. Date

Hosea’s ministry spanned several decades, beginning near the end of the reigns of Uzziah of Judah (ca. 790-739 b.c.) and Jeroboam II of Israel (ca. 793-753 b.c.) and concluding in the early years of Hezekiah’s reign. The latter’s rule began around 715 b.c. after a period of vice-regency with his father Ahaz. Since Israel was Hosea’s primary audience, it seems strange that four Judean kings, but only one Israelite king, are mentioned in Hos1:1. The reason for the omission of the six Israelite kings who followed Jeroboam II is uncertain. Perhaps it suggests the legitimacy of the Davidic dynasty (cf. Hos3:5) in contrast with the instability and disintegration of the kingship in the North (cf. Hos7:3-7). (THE BIBLE KNOWLEDGE COMMENTARY, An Exposition of the Scriptures by Dallas Seminary Faculty Based on the New International Version by John F. Walvoord, Roy B. Zuck)

Structure
Hosea is the only classical prophet from the northern kingdom. Amos also prophesied to Israel, but he was from Judah. Except for Hosea's father's name and his marriage, we know little about his life. We are told neither his birthplace nor his profession nor the circumstances of his call to prophecy. No inaugural visions like Isaiah's or Jeremiah's appear in this book.
The only personal detail of importance in the book is Hosea's marriage. His marriage and the children born become powerful symbols and vehicles to communicate God's word to Israel. While other prophets such as Jeremiah and Ezekiel used marriage as a symbol of God's relationship with Israel and Judah, no other prophet was called to experience the agony of a failed marriage as a vehicle of communication. (The Preacher's Commentary Copyright © 1982-1992 by Word, Inc. Published in Nashville, Tennessee, by Thomas Nelson, Inc.)
The twelve prophets, at the head of whom Hosea has been placed, were called of old “the lesser, or minor prophets,” by reason of the smaller compass of their prophecies, not as though their prophecies were less important than those of the four greater prophets . Hosea, at least, must have exercised the prophetic office longer than any besides; he must have spoken as much and as often, in the Name of God. A prophecy of Micah and words of Joel are adopted by Isaiah; Jeremiah employs verses of Obadiah to denounce anew the punishment of Edom; a prophecy of Joel is expanded by Ezekiel. The “twelve” were the organs of important prophecy, as to their own people, or foreign nations, or as to Him whom they looked for, our Lord. Now, since the first five were earlier than Isaiah, and next, in order of time, to the prophetic Psalms of David, Solomon, Asaph and the sons of Korah, the revelations made to these lesser prophets even ante-date those given through the four greater.
The general outpouring of the Spirit on all flesh and the Day of the Lord were first spoken of by Joel. Our resurrection in Christ on the 3rd day; the inward graces which Christ should bestow on His Church in its perpetual union with Him; the entire victory over death and the grave; and the final conversion of Judah and Israel, were first prophesied by Hosea. When James wished to show that the conversion of the Gentiles had been foretold by a prophet, he quoted a passage of Amos. “The twelve,” as they begun, so they closed the cycle of those whom God employed to leave written prophecies. Yet God, who willed that of all the earlier prophets, who prophesied from the time of Samuel to Elisha, no prophecy should remain, except the few words in the books of Kings, willed also, that little, in comparison, should be preserved, of what these later prophets spoke in His Name. Their writings altogether are not equal in compass to those of the one prophet, Isaiah. And so, like the twelve Apostles, they were enrolled in one prophetic band; their writings, both in the Jewish and Christian Church (see Cosin. Section 47ff), have been counted as one book; and, like the Apostles, they were called “the twelve” (see Carpzov iii. 270, and Cosin).
The earliest of this band followed very closely upon the ministry of Elijah and Elisha. Elisha, in his parting words 2Ki_13:14, 2Ki_13:25. foretold to Joash the three victories whereby he recovered from Syria the cities of Israel which Hazael had taken from his father Jehoahaz. In the next reign, namely, that of Jeroboam II, there arose the first of that brilliant constellation of prophets, whose light gleamed over the fall of Israel and Judah, shone in their captivity, and set at last, with the prediction of him, who should precede the rising of the Sun of Righteousness. (Albert Barnes (1798-1870)

Purpose
The primary purpose of Hosea’s prophecy, like that of his eighth-century contemporaries Amos, Isaiah, and Micah, must be understood against the background of the message and theology of Deuteronomy. The latter records the covenantal agreement between the Lord and Israel. Israel was to maintain loyalty to the Lord by worshipping Him alone and by obeying His commandments. Obedience to the covenant would result in blessing Deut 28:1-14. Disobedience would bring judgment and eventually exile (cf. the covenant curses listed in Deut 28:15-68. Hosea’s role as a prophet was to expose the nation’s breach of covenant and announce God’s intention to implement the covenant curses. At the same time Hosea affirmed the Deuteronomic promise of Israel’s ultimate restoration Deut 30:1-10.
