Romans 1:24-32 - When God Lets Go

一瞬で全てが変わることがあります。今週、東京の奥多摩にある温泉で、私の手から水筒が滑り落ち、足の指に直撃しました。レントゲンを見ると、骨が数え切れないほどの破片に砕けていました。一つの落とした物が、私の生活に即座に混乱をもたらしました。ハイキングもできず、移動は痛みを伴い、簡単な活動にも制限がかかるようになりました。
この出来事は、厳粛な霊的現実を表しています。神が最終的に手を離すことを決められた時、混乱が始まるのです。
神の怒りの進行
先週、私たちは神の怒りが天から現されている理由を学びました。今週、ローマ人への手紙1章24節は、その方法を示しています。「それゆえ、神は彼らを心の欲望のままに汚れに引き渡され、そのために彼らは互いにそのからだを辱めました」
「それゆえ」という言葉は、私たちが以前学んだことに直接つながっています。世界は神の真理を抑え込み、神を敬うことや感謝することを拒否し、永遠の神を被造物の偶像と取り替えました。人類が神からこれほど遠く離れたので、神は最終的に「手を離す」と言われたのです。
この箇所全体を通して、「神は彼らを引き渡された」という表現が繰り返し出てきます。この神による解放は、人々が望むことを正確に経験させることを意味します。24節では、神は彼らを心の欲望、汚れ、不道徳へと引き渡されました。25節はその理由を説明しています。「彼らは神の真理を偽りと取り替え、造り主の代わりに被造物を拝み、これに仕えました」
私たちが自分に語る嘘
人は自分自身の物語を最も熱心に聞きます。私たちは常に、正しくないと知っている行動を正当化するために、自分自身に物語を語っています。「あのドライバーには教訓が必要だ」「心配をかけないために嘘をつく」「アイスクリームにはカルシウムが含まれているから、一日三回食べるのは理にかなっている」
人が真理を嘘と取り替える時、ますます奇妙なことを正当化するようになります。これらの嘘は、暗く曲がった道へと導き、一歩ごとにさらに暗くなり、自然なものから不自然なものへと移っていきます。
悪のねじ曲げる効果
物語は普遍的に、悪が本来あるべきものをねじ曲げたバージョンを作り出すことを認識しています。バットマンのジョーカー、ロード・オブ・ザ・リングのオーク、ドラゴンボールのゴクウブラック。これらのキャラクターは、悪が神の創造を不自然なものへと歪めるという私たちの本能的な理解を示しています。
26節から27節は、この進行を説明しています。神は彼らを恥ずべき情欲に引き渡されました。女性たちは自然な関係を不自然なものと取り替えました。男性たちは女性との自然な関係を捨て、互いに対する情欲に燃え、恥ずべき行為を行い、その誤りに対する報いを受けました。
神は人類を男性と女性として創造し、結婚の契約の中で性的な親密さの賜物を祝福されました。これが自然なデザインです。しかし、悪魔は常に神が創造したものをねじ曲げます。パウロはコリントから手紙を書きました。コリントはローマ帝国のLGBTQの中心地でした。パウロは同性愛を、神が祝福された親密さのねじ曲がった不自然なバージョンとして、肉的な欲望を追い求めることから生まれたものとして特定しました。
これは同性愛が許されない罪だという意味ではありません。むしろ、社会がそれを受け入れる時、それは神の真理を拒否し、神から遠く離れたことを明らかにしています。
混乱の連鎖
クリスチャン家庭の十代の少年が、良い教会の子どものように見えましたが、私的には心を暗闇と嘘で満たしていました。彼は麻薬に手を出し、うつ病になり、自殺願望を持つようになりました。最終的に、彼は綿密な銀行強盗計画を立て、地図に描いた下水道を通って逃げるつもりでした。または、そうしようとして死ぬつもりでした。彼は偽の銃を使い、警察に向けて、撃たれて死にました。

28節は述べています。「彼らが神を知ろうとしなかったので、神は彼らを良くない思いに引き渡されました。それで彼らは、してはならないことをするようになりました」堕落した思いとは、テストに失格し、何も良いことに適さないことを意味します。心がねじ曲がり暗くなると、神が私たちに祝福してくださった創造性が、痛みを引き起こす悪い目的のために使われます。
29節から31節は、その結果の混乱を列挙しています。不義、悪、貪欲、悪意、妬み、殺人、争い、欺き、陰口、中傷、神を憎むこと、暴力、自慢、新しい悪の発明、両親への不従順、愚かさ、約束を破ること、無情、冷酷さ。
32節は、人々は神の定め、つまりそのようなことを行う者は死に値するということを知っていながら、それを行うだけでなく、それを行う他の人々を承認することで結論づけています。
福音の希望
この暗闇は、イエスなしの人生を描いています。イエスは世の光です。イエスなしでは、世界は暗闇の中を歩きます。しかし、希望があります。パウロがこの箇所を書いた理由そのものです。
第一コリント6章9節から11節は、同様の罪を列挙し、そして宣言します。「あなたがたの中にはそのような人たちもいました。しかし、主イエス・キリストの名と私たちの神の御霊によって、あなたがたは洗われ、聖なる者とされ、義と認められました」
イエスは罪を洗い流してくださいます。イエスだけが、私たちを暗くねじ曲がったところから導き出してくださいます。イエスは私たちの心を癒してくださいます。私たちは裁きの下にありました。暗く、ねじ曲がり、不自然でした。しかし、イエスは私たちが受けるべき裁きを受けてくださいました。イエスは私たちを洗い、赦し、聖なる者とし、すべての罪を私たちの記録から取り除いてくださいました。
もしあなたの信仰がキリストにあるなら、あなたはこの章のねじ曲がった暗闇から解放されています。イエスはあなたを混乱から引き出し、御自分の平和な光の中へと導いてくださいました。イエスはあなたの罪のために死に、よみがえられました。それは、あなたが救われるためです。古い、暗い、ねじ曲がった方法から救われたのですから、戻る必要はありません。イエスとともに光の中を歩んでください。真理を受け入れ、嘘を拒否し、イエスの光があなたの人生を満たす経験をしてください
A single moment can change everything. This week, a water bottle slipped from my hand at an onsen in Okutama, Tokyo, and landed directly on my toe. The X-ray revealed the bone had exploded into too many fragments to count. One dropped object brought immediate chaos into my life—no more hiking, painful travel, and frustrating limitations on simple activities.
This incident illustrates a sobering spiritual reality: when God finally decides to let go, chaos begins.
The Progression of God's Wrath
Last week we explored why God's wrath is revealed from heaven. This week, Romans 1:24 shows us how: "Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves."
That word "therefore" connects directly to what we studied previously. The world suppressed God's truth, refused to honor Him or give thanks, and exchanged the immortal God for created idols. Because humanity turned so far from the Lord, God eventually said, "I'm letting go."
Throughout this passage, we encounter the phrase "God gave them up" repeatedly. This divine release means allowing people to experience exactly what they desire. In verse 24, He gave them up to the lusts of their hearts—to impurity and immorality. Verse 25 explains why: "they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator."
The Lies We Tell Ourselves
People listen most intently to their own stories. We constantly tell ourselves narratives to justify actions we know aren't right. "That driver needs a lesson." "I'll lie to protect others from worrying." "Ice cream has calcium, so eating it three times daily makes sense."
When someone exchanges truth for lies, they justify increasingly strange things. These lies lead down dark, twisted paths that grow darker with each step, moving from the natural to the unnatural.
The Twisting Effect of Evil
Stories universally recognize that evil creates twisted versions of what should be. The Joker in Batman, the orcs in Lord of the Rings, Goku Black in Dragon Ball—these characters demonstrate our innate understanding that evil distorts God's creation into something unnatural.
Verses 26-27 describe this progression. God gave them up to dishonorable passions. Women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. Men abandoned natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, committing shameless acts and receiving the penalty for their error.
God created mankind as male and female, blessed the gift of sexual intimacy within marriage's covenant. This represents the natural design. But the devil always twists what God creates. Paul wrote from Corinth—the LGBTQ capital of the Roman Empire—and identified homosexuality as a twisted, unnatural version of God's blessed intimacy, born from chasing fleshly desires.
This doesn't mean homosexuality is unforgivable. Rather, when a society embraces it, this reveals they have rejected God's truth and turned far from Him.
The Cascade of Chaos
A teenage boy from a Christian family appeared to be a good church kid, but privately filled his mind with darkness and lies. He got into drugs, became depressed and suicidal. Eventually, he planned an elaborate bank robbery, intending to escape through mapped-out sewers—or die trying. He used a fake gun, pointed it at police, and was shot dead.
The aftermath brought overwhelming chaos. Relationships crumbled. His family fell apart. Dark heaviness settled over the school. Hundreds of lives were impacted because one person listened to lies.
Verse 28 states: "Since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done." A debased mind means failing the test, unfit for anything good. When minds become twisted and dark, the creativity God blessed us with gets used for evil purposes that cause pain.
Verses 29-31 list the resulting chaos: unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice, envy, murder, strife, deceit, gossip, slander, hating God, violence, boasting, inventing new evils, disobedience to parents, foolishness, promise-breaking, heartlessness, and ruthlessness.
Verse 32 concludes that though people know God's decree—that those practicing such things deserve death—they not only do them but approve others who practice them.
The Hope of the Gospel
This darkness describes life without Jesus, who is the light of the world. Without Him, the world walks in darkness. But there is hope—the entire reason Paul writes this passage.
First Corinthians 6:9-11 lists similar sins, then declares: "And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God."
Jesus washes away sin. He alone leads us from the dark and twisted. He heals our minds. We were under judgment—dark, twisted, unnatural—but Jesus took the judgment we deserved. He washed us, forgave us, made us holy, and removed all sin from our record.
If your faith is in Christ, you've been set free from the twisted darkness of this chapter. He's pulled you from chaos into His peaceful light. Jesus died for your sins and rose from the dead so you could be saved. Because you've been saved from old, dark, twisted ways, there's no need to return. Walk in the light with Jesus. Embrace the truth, reject the lie, and experience His light filling your life.
