1 Peter 4:1 (ESV) Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 1 Peter 2:21 (ESV) For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 1 Peter 4:1 (ESV) Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, Image: LinkedIn Suffering (for righteousness sake/doing good) serves my sanctification. 1 Peter 4:1 (ESV) Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, Romans 8:7–8 (ESV) For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not 8 submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. Luke 24:39 (ESV) See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 1 Peter 2:22 (ESV) He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 1 Peter 3:18 (ESV) For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous . . . Hebrews 2:18 (ESV) For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. Hebrews 2:18 (ESV) For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. Hebrews 5:8–9 (ESV) Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he 9 suffered. And being made perfect [lit. complete], he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, 1 Peter 4:1 (ESV) Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 1 Peter 4:8 (ESV) Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:9 (ESV) Show hospitality to one another without grumbling.” 1 John 1:8 (ESV) If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 1. Suffering for doing good clarifies what I am living for—“my passions or God’s will” (vv. 2-3). 1 Peter 4:2–3 (ESV) so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions 3 but for the will of God. For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. 1 Peter 4:1 (ESV) Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 1 Peter 4:2–3 (ESV) so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions 3 but for the will of God. For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. Paraphrase of 1 Peter 1:1c-2a “the person who has [unjustly per 2:19] suffered bodily [for doing good per 2:20] has ceased from sin in the sense that they are no longer living for human passions but for God’s will.” 1 Peter 4:2–3 (ESV) so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions 3 but for the will of God. For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. John 4:34 (ESV) Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work. John 6:38 (ESV) For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will BUT the will of him who sent me. 2. Suffering for doing good clarifies whose immediate approval I am looking for—“they are surprised . . . and they malign you” (v. 4). 1 Peter 4:4 (ESV) With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you; 3. Suffering for doing good clarifies whose verdict matters in the final analysis (“they will give an account . . . ready to judge . . . judged in the flesh” vv. 5-6). 1 Peter 4:5–6 (ESV) but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the 6 dead. For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does. 1 Peter 2:23 (ESV) When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. John 5:27–29 (ESV) And he [the Father] has given him [the Son] authority to execute 28 judgment, because he is the Son of Man. Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. 2 Timothy 4:1 (ESV) I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: 1 Peter 2:23 (ESV) When He [Jesus] was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. Matthew 5:10–12 (ESV) “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the 11 kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of 12 evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Bonus theology—v. 6. Suffering for doing right is connected to evangelism and to Christ’s coming to earth to save sinners. 1 Peter 4:6 (ESV) For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does. Paraphrase of 1 Peter 4:6 For this is why the gospel was preached even to those [Christians] who are [now physically] dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in [by the power of] the Spirit the way God does. 1 Peter 3:18 (ESV) For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the Spirit, 2 Peter 3:8 (ESV) But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
