Awesome God!
Awesome God!
This series is NOT about me telling you how awesome God is
I assume most of us already know God is awesome
but…
You can know God is awesome without knowing the value of saying God is awesome.
You can know God is awesome without knowing the value of saying God is awesome.
If you’re married
You can think your spouse is…beautiful, amazing, wonderful
But there is incredible value in saying so
What is the value of saying continually, “Our God is an awesome God!”
value of praise?
value of rehearsing the characteristics / deeds of God
Context of Psalm 71
An older author
Who has spent his life praising God
But now he is in trouble
And needs the Lord’s help
1 In you, O Lord, do I take refuge; let me never be put to shame! 2 In your righteousness deliver me and rescue me; incline your ear to me, and save me! 3 Be to me a rock of refuge, to which I may continually come; you have given the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress.
The psalms are…
celebrating God’s salvation
anticipating God’s salvation
or both
This psalm is anticipating God’s salvation
let me never be put to shame (“you won’t let me down”)
deliver me
rescue me
listen to me
save me
you are my rock and my fortress
4 Rescue me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of the unjust and cruel man. 5 For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O Lord, from my youth. 6 Upon you I have leaned from before my birth; you are he who took me from my mother’s womb. My praise is continually of you.
I have trusted you
every moment of every day
my entire life
It may sound like he saying…
Look how faithful I’ve been
I’ve earned the right to be rescued
He’s really saying, “YOU’VE earned the right to be trusted. You’ve NEVER let me down.”
You’ve not earned the right to be rescued, but hasn’t God earned the right to be trusted?
7 I have been as a portent to many, but you are my strong refuge.
I have been a sign to many
may be a good sign
probably a bad sign, a bad omen
“many are appalled when they see me” (NET)
People think I’m bad luck, but you are my strong refuge.
8 My mouth is filled with your praise, and with your glory all the day.
Can we say this?
is our mouth filled with his praise?
is our mouth filled with his glory all the day?
Is God LESS deserving or MORE deserving of this now than he was then?
the psalmist knew nothing of Calvary, of the cross
but YOU do!
9 Do not cast me off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength is spent. 10 For my enemies speak concerning me; those who watch for my life consult together 11 and say, “God has forsaken him; pursue and seize him, for there is none to deliver him.”
12 O God, be not far from me; O my God, make haste to help me! 13 May my accusers be put to shame and consumed; with scorn and disgrace may they be covered who seek my hurt.
14 But I will hope continually and will praise you yet more and more. 15 My mouth will tell of your righteous acts, of your deeds of salvation all the day, for their number is past my knowledge. 16 With the mighty deeds of the Lord God I will come; I will remind them of your righteousness, yours alone.
No matter
how hopeless it feels
how many enemies are against me
what they are saying about me
how OLD or WEAK or FRAIL I am
I will
hope
praise
tell of your righteous acts
how does he have the confidence to BOAST so much in the reliability of God?
17 O God, from my youth you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds. 18 So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come. 19 Your righteousness, O God, reaches the high heavens. You who have done great things, O God, who is like you?
He has confidence because he KNOWS GOD’S CHARACTER
You have taught me
Your wondrous deeds
Your might
Your power
Your righteousness
When we continually rehearse God’s CHARACTER and CONDUCT, we have CONFIDENCE about how we will act in the present and the future.
20 You who have made me see many troubles and calamities will revive me again; from the depths of the earth you will bring me up again. 21 You will increase my greatness and comfort me again.
Revive me from the depths of the earth
The psalmist means this metaphorically
bring me back from the edge of death
God did this for Jesus
fully
completely
ultimately
Will do this for us
in this way he will SAVE us from EVERYTHING
wish I had said this last week
he will save us from every disease, every trouble, every calamity
he will save us from death itself
22 I will also praise you with the harp for your faithfulness, O my God; I will sing praises to you with the lyre, O Holy One of Israel. 23 My lips will shout for joy, when I sing praises to you; my soul also, which you have redeemed.
My soul
My life
My inner-being
My self
Anticipated response
praise
sing
shout for joy
We can say this about EVERY bad situation
even if I experience a temporary LOSS
I will eventually experience a PERMANENT victory
24 And my tongue will talk of your righteous help all the day long, for they have been put to shame and disappointed who sought to do me hurt.
Why was the psalmist able
to have this kind of confidence
to have this kind of trust
to have this kind of peace
In spite of his
age
frailty
the way people treated him
Because he had spent his WHOLE life praising God
here is the VALUE of saying continually, “Our God is an awesome God!”
Praise prepares you to persevere.
Praise prepares you to persevere.
Continually talk about God’s
Conduct
Character
It will reinforce your confidence
you can endure
you can persevere
Because you KNOW God does not put people to shame who trust in Him
