Ok so obviously things are a bit different this morning
We are going to partake in the Lords Supper this morning but rather than making it a part of our service we want to make it the sermon
We have been going through the highlights of the Bible if you will
One of those that is very important to us even today is the Lords Supper but it was called the Last Supper
It happens after Jesus’s triumphal entry at the end of the week
Jesus has come in to Jerusalem for the Passover feast
The Passover fest like the Lords supper for us today were to be done in remembrance of some things that have happened
The Passover was to be prepared a certain way and eaten a certain way
It was to remind them
Of what had happened and primarily what God had brought them out of and saved them from
The bread was to be unleavened to remind them to leave in hast as they left Egypt in such a hurry
The herbs they ate were bitter herbs to remind them of the bitterness of slavery
You can go and search the Seder Dinner
As it reminded them of what God had brought them out of
Exodus 12:21–28 NASB95
21 Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel and said to them, “Go and take for yourselves lambs according to your families, and slay the Passover lamb. 22 “You shall take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood which is in the basin, and apply some of the blood that is in the basin to the lintel and the two doorposts; and none of you shall go outside the door of his house until morning. 23 “For the Lord will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to come in to your houses to smite you. 24 “And you shall observe this event as an ordinance for you and your children forever. 25 “When you enter the land which the Lord will give you, as He has promised, you shall observe this rite. 26 “And when your children say to you, ‘What does this rite mean to you?’ 27 you shall say, ‘It is a Passover sacrifice to the Lord who passed over the houses of the sons of Israel in Egypt when He smote the Egyptians, but spared our homes.’ ” And the people bowed low and worshiped. 28 Then the sons of Israel went and did so; just as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did.
They were to remember that the Lord did in fact pass over them and spared them in Egypt
That the I AM who was, who is, and who is to come was there with them in Egypt
That during the plaques God sent the 10th plague where the first born would die
They were to go and prepare a lamb who would die in their place
They were also to each bread with no yeast so some flat bread
They were also to eat with their shoes on and with their belts on and staff in hand
Because they would soon be leaving
But the lamb’s blood would be put on the door posts
Both sides and the top part
God would see that Blood and pass over that house
Anyone in that house would be sparred
We know because we can look forward and see that the lamb represents the future lamb of God which is Jesus
A perfect sacrifice in our own place
And we know that those who have invited the Spirit of God to live inside them the blood has covered them and God passes over them and spares them eternal seperation from Him
Those who are not covered by the blood of Christ will be sent to Hell
But the passover is important they are called to remember what God did for them
They are called to continue to do it through out the generations
We have I would argue a complete meaning of the passover dinner or as we call it the Lords Supper
Jesus went into Jerusalem to do just that
Matthew 26:20–30 NASB95
20 Now when evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the twelve disciples. 21 As they were eating, He said, “Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.” 22 Being deeply grieved, they each one began to say to Him, “Surely not I, Lord?” 23 And He answered, “He who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray Me. 24 “The Son of Man is to go, just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.” 25 And Judas, who was betraying Him, said, “Surely it is not I, Rabbi?” Jesus said to him, “You have said it yourself.” 26 While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” 27 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; 28 for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins. 29 “But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.” 30 After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
See Jesus had one last Passover meal with them
Again this was instituted
to remind them of what they God had brought them out of
To remind them that God had passed over their homes and spared their homes
Jesus being a good Jew is going to par take in the Passover meal
We know that Judas goes on to later betray Him
We know that later Jesus is arrested and crucified and we even know that 3 days after his crucification He gets up and walks out of the grave
Here at the Last Super we see God Jesus explain the Lords Supper
Specifically the Bread and the Blood
Matthew 26:26–28 NASB95
26 While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” 27 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; 28 for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.
We know the bread repersents Jesus’s body
What separates us from others is that we don’t believe this is the actual body of Jesus but that is represents his body
We know this is just some flat bread I bought at the store
But that the bread represents Jesus’s body
See Jesus’s body was beaten and broken for our us
Isaiah 53:5 NASB95
5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.
The Prophet Isaiah explains the broken body of Christ
He was pierced through for our transgressions
He was crushed for our own sin
Here is was changes things
It is the individual sins of everyone
Not only our sin as a group but our sin as individuals
We are healed by the beating of Jesus
So when it says that Jesus broke the body and then gave it to them say this is my Body
We know that Jesus’s body was broken for you and I
And let me be clear as horrible as that is and as painful as that is
That is the only way we are heal through a broken body of a perfect lamb Jesus
As we take the bread in a few moments
We are to remind ourselves of what Jesus did for us
This is only for the believer this morning
In that as you take bread you get to remember what Jesus did to save you
If you have not been saved then you can’t remember what Jesus did for you But you are welcome to sit quietly and watch
As you take it you are going to break the cracker
This is Jesus body that was broken for you
This is a time of reflection and remembrance as you take the bread
I will pray and they will play some instrumental music as you partake in the bread
PRAY
Then we have Jesus after the bread was broken and taken
Jesus Says
Matthew 26:26–28 NASB95
26 While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” 27 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; 28 for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.
This is my blood
Now like the bread we know that this isn’t real blood but it is just grape juice
To the point I have to tell you about my grandma
She grew up in the catholic church and she really enjoyed taking the Lords Supper here at Maranatha she thought we got the good grape juice
Anything is probably better than the wine at the catholic church
But that is beside the point
We know this is grape juice I bought yesterday
What is important is that it represents the blood of Jesus
Sort of weird unless you know what we are taking about
Like when we say we are washed in the blood
Again sort of weird unless we know what we are taking about
We know there is no other way to enter into the Kingdom of God but through Jesus and His sacrifice
Which means church we need to be washed in the blood
See when you repent of your sin and trust in Jesus you are symbolically being washed in the blood of Christ and it must happen
Because at that point you are justified
Justified means you because of the blood of Christ God looks as you just if i’d never sinned
The blood of sin washes us white as snow
1 John 1:7 NASB95
7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.
Is the blood of Christ that makes us clean and made new
Not just refurbished but made new takes all the sin away
As they cup of wine at the Last Supper they were to remember that Jesus’s blood they are made new and cleanse
In the OT the blood meant God would spare them and pass over them
They were safe
The blood for us means we are saved
We will spend eternity in heaven because Jesus spilt His own blood in my place
This is again why we believe it is for the believer
You can’t remember and be thankful for what Jesus did for you if you ahve not accepted what He did for you on the cross
But like the bread we encourage you to sit at the table and watch
This is a time of reflection and remembrance that Jesus’ blood was spilt in your place and because of that you are now saved
Like the bread I will pray they will play some instrumental music
PRAY
Church we have taken the Lords Supper
Church service as been a bit awkward and interesting
You see church it is through the bread and juice
It is through the broken body of Christ and the Spilt Blood of Christ that you have been invited to the table
Some of you this morning maybe you are not saved and didn’t partake int he Lords Supper but you were invited to the table because of the sacrifice of Jesus
That is why Jesus came to offer Himself up for everyone who would believe
John 3:16 NASB95
16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
Jesus came to give you the option to believe and be saved
That is why the body and blood were broken and spilled to give you a seat at the table
If you will only repent and believe
Jesus came that people might be saved
That is the Love of Jesus on display that He willingly offered up His body to be broken that we might be saved
His blood to be spilled in our place that we might be saved through His sacrifice as the perfect lamb of God
2 Peter 3:9 NASB95
9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
So please understand this church
The sacrifce that we remember as we take the Lords Supper the broken body and the spilt blood gives us a seat at the Table of the King
We have a named spot at the table because we have repented and trusted in Jesus
Maybe you are here this morning and you have never accepted the gift of Jesus’s death and resurrection
You are not saved there is a seat at the table because of the broken body and spilt blood
For it to be a named spot you need to repent of your sin and trust in Jesus
See Jesus’ sacrifice give everyone option to be saved
If they will repent of their sin and trust Jesus
Our invitation is going to be different
We are going to as you to spend sometime in quite reflection as your seat
They will play a song and maybe you need to for the first time trust in Jesus this morning you are encouraged to repent of your sin and trust in Jesus right there at your seat
Maybe you need to spend sometime in pray again you are encouraged to do that at your seat
