Pursuing God: Our Response to His Promise

Bible Passage: Jeremiah 29:11–14

Summary: In Jeremiah 29:11-14, God addresses His people in exile, assuring them of His providential care and intentions for a hopeful future. This passage comes during a time of despair, and God encourages His people to actively engage with Him, driving home the importance of faith, obedience, and heartfelt seeking as critical components to experiencing His promises. It showcases God's desire for His people to have a restored relationship with Him, while they navigate difficulty.
The Wycliffe Bible Commentary: Old Testament 5) A Letter to the Exiles. 29:1-32.

A Letter to the Exiles. 29:1-32.

The prophets of optimism were busy among the Judeans already exiled to Babylon (those carried away after the 597 B.C. attack on Jerusalem), as well as among those still in Jerusalem. To persuade the deportees to settle in Babylon and be contented there was the purpose of this letter, doubtless written within a few years after 597 B.C.

The Wycliffe Bible Commentary: Old Testament 4) Hananiah’s Opposition to Jeremiah. 28:1-17.

Evidently Jeremiah had no word from the Lord against Hananiah at this time. So he declared that time would tell—if the prediction came to pass—whether Hananiah was sent by God or not.

10. Yoke. See note on 27:2. 12. Later Jeremiah received an answer for Hananiah. 16. Jeremiah made a counter sign (cf. v. 3). Its fulfillment meant not only the discrediting of Hananiah as a prophet, but also his death (v. 17).

1. Promise of Hope

Jeremiah 29:11 KJV (WS)
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
God provides a promise of a hopeful future. this hope is not passive; rather, it ignites a proactive response to seek God’s plans amid life's uncertainties.
We don”t know what the stock market is going to do
We don”t know what the economy will be
We don”t know what will happen in Venezuela since U.S. tropops were sent Ukraine, Middle East, Russia or China
We don”t know what is the next thing thing coming out of the White house
We don”t know what is going to happen on election day
Highlight the limitations of human plans and the supremacy of God’s purposes, encouraging believers to align their desires with God's will.
God’s Knowledge Of Us Is Intimate—
Matthew 10:29–31 KJV (WS)
Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.
God took steps in the begining to meet the deepest need we have, and that is our need to be saved. Before God had even made the world, He knew that He would make man in His image and that men would sin against Him.
before there was ever a man to save, or a sin from which to save him, God had already provided a means of salvation. The plan then was the same plan we have today. Notice, Rev. 13:8
Revelation 13:8 KJV (WS)
And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
Eph. 1:4; Titus 1:2 1 Pet. 1:18–19. This plan was fulfilled when the Lord Jesus Christ died on the cross at Calvary, shed His precious Blood and paid our sin debt. 3 days later, He arose from the dead and ascended back to His Father to be the mediator between God and man, 1 Tim. 2:5. Now, anyone who needs their sins taken care of can find the hope and the help they need in the Lord Jesus, simply by receiving Him as their Savior by faith, John 3:16.
Titus 1:2 KJV (WS)
In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;
We must accept finite disappointment, but we must never lose infinite hope.
Martin Luther King Jr. (Baptist Minister and Civil Rights Activist)
5394 God shall be my hope, my stay, my guide, and lantern to my feet.
William Shakespeare
The true work of God is simply to believe in the One God has sent. We cannot “do the works God requires” at all. Our only hope is to rely on what Christ has done.

God knows the plans he has for you God knows where you are, God Sees you, God feels you, Hebrews 4:15
Hebrews 4:15 KJV (WS)
For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
God fills you Eph 3:19
Ephesians 3:19 KJV (WS)
And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

2. Prayerful Pursuit

Jeremiah 29:12 KJV (WS)
Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.
Pray His promises Psalm 81:10
Psalm 81:10 KJV (WS)
I am the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it. ASK Seek Knock

Colossians 2:9–10 “For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:”

3. Persistent Seeking

Jeremiah 29:13 KJV (WS)
And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
includes everything -sincere devotion. find fulfillment and alignment with God’s redemptive work in the world
If you find that attending church services has become routine, seek God more deeply by getting involved in a ministry. Choose an area that resonates with your gifts, such as hospitality, teaching, or outreach. Serving alongside others will enrich your connection to the church body and provide practical ways to live out your faith. As you serve, actively pray for those you come in contact with, asking God to use you as a light in your community and deepen your relationship with Him through acts of service.

4. Promise of Restoration

Jeremiah 29:14 KJV (WS)
And I will be found of you, saith the Lord: and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the Lord; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive.
  B.      God Knows About Your Situations—He knows all that is happening in your life as well! Nothing that has ever come your way has ever taken the Lord by surprise. In fact, He has allowed it to happen for His own purposes and for your good, Rom. 8:28. Often the sufferings and burdens of life are greater than we feel that we can bear, but in the midst of them, we have some pretty spectacular promises. A few that come to mind are:
      1.      He knows all about it—If God knows all about it, then it must be part of His plan for my life. If that is true, then I can accept it and trust Him to bring me safely through. For if I never had a problem I wouldn’t Know that God could solve them.
      2.      He is there in the midst of it—Heb. 13:5; Matt. 28:20—There are times when the presence of God can neither be seen nor felt, but He is there nonetheless, protecting, providing and watching out after His own.
      3.      He cares about what we are facing—1 Pet. 5:7; Heb. 4:15—It may feel like God doesn’t care, but in truth, He cares far more than we could ever know.
      4.      He has promised grace to bring us through—2 Cor. 12:9
Lord has promised to meet the need and to give us grace sufficient for the trial at hand.
      5.      He has promised rest in the midst of toil—Matt. 11:28—Even in the middle of the weary day of trial, the Lord has promised rest to his children if they will come to Him and lay their burdens down.
. God knows everything that you are into today and He will get you through it!)
(Ill. Think back over the lessons taught in the Word of God. Remember all the times where the Bible declares that the Lord was faithful on behalf of His people. As I share a few of these with you, please remember that we are serving the same God this morning Who did all these things!
      1.      When He parted the Red Sea—Ex. 14
      2.      When He protected the 3 Hebrews—Dan. 3
      3.      When He protected Daniel—Dan. 6
      4.      When He fed and watered the Israelites for 40 years—Ex. 16–17.
      5.      When He fed the 5,000—John 6
      6.      When He came to the Disciples in the midst of the storm.
God's commitment to bring back His people signifies not just a physical return, but spiritual reconciliation, fully realized in Jesus' redemptive work.
no matter the circumstances, God's restorative grace through Christ is available and powerful.
